The perfect walker's bag, why is it so hard to get it right?

I have a Hoofer and an Air Sport, plus the Nike air Hybrid (2016 and 2020 versions) and a Sport Lite.

For me the winner is the Hoofer. Despite the extra weight, it does everything I care about really well:

- minimal club tangle, even with a full 14 & midsize grips. I’ve put 18 clubs in it for a range session and made it work

- water bottle pocket is big enough, and it’s in the perfect spot/angle so you can access it while walking

- best stand bag on a riding cart.  Strap pass through is solid and the straps are easily stowed when you unclip halfway

- comfortable and everything just sits in a good spot.
- more storage than you really need if you’re walking, but it’s there
- The all grey version looks amazing

I walked 36 with that bag 4-5 days a week all summer long and any fatigue was not the bag’s fault. I’m a little bigger than the average person, but not enormous or anything, and I’ve got a bad left knee and left shoulder.  Turning 40 in a few months.

love that bag, I own two.

Can you post a pic of the all grey?

What do y’all think of the 2021 Hoofer Lite vs 21’ Stadry?

For all around stand bag and carry. Do-it-all.

Hoofer Lite by a mile imo.  I generally prefer Titleist stuff to PING, but PING just makes a better bag.

Thanks!  I’ve had Titleist stadry and ply over the last years. Pockets and stitching have come apart on both pretty quick (new players 4 16”- side pocket came off while playing in Europe, stadry 17’ ball pocket stitching and zipper delaminated, replacement 18’ pocket ripped). I take care of my gear. So it’s def manufacturing defect or just poor quality / design.

Time for a new bag. My CC is a Titleist facility, but I am going to have to try something else. They do look nice though.

Ping made the perfect carry bag. It was 1999 and the hoofer 2. It wasn’t ultralight, but it could take a beating and last 20+ years... I wish they had kept the build quality and improved the design.

Got a nice surprise today, my club called and my bag is in.  Think this may be the first 2021 StaDry to hit the interwebs.  This is the Players 4 which is definitely on the compact side and I may ultimately regret going this small but that was intentional on my part.  Weighed it dry on  my not so accurate bathroom scale and its in the neighborhood of 4 pounds including the straps and rain cover. Included a couple of shots with a measuring tape for those that are curious.  Only complaint so far (if you can call it that) is that the zipper on the ball pocket is fairly stiff, have to hold one side to pull it open/closed.  Hopefully will loosen up a bit but again, that's a pretty small nitpick.  And while the straps are good enough, I do wish they were as good as the Pings.

On to the pics!

Great pics! To each his own...after I looked over the bag at the PGASS I wasn't too impressed with the "upgrades" they seemed like an afterthought during production IMO.

I went with the 2019/2020 P4 StaDry (blank no Logo) comes with a double and single strap. I currently have the Jones Original Stand bag (5" opening), very compact and only has 1 big pocket on the back so the P4 '19/'20 for pockets is about the same if not slightly bigger. I think the P4 top opening will be an improvement from what I have now and it should work out perfect....but we will have to see!

I had one and used it until the dividers were so torn inside the clubs would get snagged every time.  Nothing carries like the old late 1990s hoofers.  It’s like the bag and clubs wrap your lower back.  It truly carried at least a few pounds lighter than it weighs.  Why change them?  The new ones aren’t anywhere as good as this era.  I still judge all carry bags against these.

It kills me... I shop for other bags on occasion, but why would I buy a new bag that is worse and won’t outlast my Ping?

Only had about 5 stand bags in my golfing life and by far the best is the Motocaddy Hydroflex, it has everything, plus its lightweight and really comfy to carry

Added bonus it can be turned into a cart bag very easily, just as good as a normal cart bag as well when its on there

What company do you guys think makes the best bags outside of the major OEM's? I don't have any PING or Titleist clubs, so don't think it would make sense to use one of their bags, and seems like TaylorMade, Cleveland, or Srixon bags aren't great.

Sounds like Sun Mountain makes the best stuff outside of the OEM's...anyone else? I've had OGIO bags in the past that were very well made, although definitely on the heavy side.

Of the more mainstream companies, PING makes the best bag imo, with Sun Mtn being right up there.  It would be extremely silly not to buy what you've determined to be the best bag based on what clubs you carry.  Shouldn't even be a consideration.

Good to know. Yeah that's fair...I just always think of the bag you have matching a majority of the clubs you carry. But yes, at the end of the day I'll definitely buy what I think will be the best fit overall.

I've been using nothing but Ping bags for 20 years, and I don't think I've ever owned a Ping club.

For what it's worth there was recently an entire thread on matching your clubs to your bag and probably >90% of the posters agreed it was a ridiculous notion.

Interesting...good to know! Yeah, I'm just getting serious about golf after taking 10 yrs away from it, so still learning all the nuances and the golfing culture (see my thread about Iron Covers, Lol!)

The golf shops in my area will hopefully be re-opening over the next couple of weeks, so getting to actually see these bags in person and hold them will really help. All decisions and research are much tougher without being able to see anything in person.

I felt that way a bit with the single strap.  When I put the double strap on it all changed.  Felt much more balanced.  I walk 4 out of 5 times at my club and don’t ever feel tired afterwards.  I’ve had prior Gen hoofers and have two TM flex light bags, all of which are great bags, but just love the overall look and versatility of the LinksMaster.

W/S Quiver for  $99 gets the job done for me. 3 way top, 3 zippered pockets plus open large open top pocket in front. Only comes in blue or red though. I got one of each. Comes in at 3 lbs. Satisfies my need with 12-14 clubs easily. Not a lot of tangle and I use OS grips. Happen to be riding in the day of pic, going through an Achilles issue. Healing up nicely though!

Just tried out both the ping hoofer lite and the craz-e lite. Loaded up both and walked around the store then put bags down pulling clubs to simulate course situations. Very disappointed in both in terms of balance. HL was the better of the two as straps were more comfortable than I expected and the CEL was definitely as advertised, very light. My issue was I couldn’t get the bags to balance on my back and it felt that the clubs were going to fall out. I checked myself in an apparel mirror and both weren’t droopy, just felt that way at the top. The tangle seemed worse to me than the the bag I’ve used for over 20 years, an old L8 that doesn’t have any internal dividers at all. The search continues...

Hoofer Lite is the best balanced bag I've ever used.  Did you have balls, water bottle, etc. in bottom pockets?  That's what balances out the heavier club heads.  Any bag will be unbalanced if it only contains golf clubs.

Yes, I put a dozen balls in each. Wanted to simulate on course experience as much as possible. The act of putting the box of balls in the bag definitely frazzled the kid working until I explained what I was trying to accomplish.

Well if clubs felt like they were falling out something was set up wrong.  Maybe someone screwed with the strap settings or something.  I've tried about every bag out there and the Hoofer Lite is the best bag on the shoulders out of all of them.  The tangle is the only thing that keeps it from being perfect.
