15 clubs in the bag?

Recommended Posts

This topic has probably been discussed often enough, but, I would like opinions of whether you would agree to upping the limit of clubs in the bag to 15? Why not, you still have to make the shot no matter how many club options you have? What are your thoughts on the subject, and would you like to see the limit go up by a one club? More than one club?

I see no reason for 15 clubs. I'm not even sure I could find a 15th club to add. Maybe a second putter?

14 is fine.

I kept track last year and used my 3 wood about once per week and 5 iron maybe once every couple rounds.

Without knowing it I just choose to hit other clubs or it never really came up to those clubs getting used yardage-wise.

Matter of fact, I posted the story before but I bet my best friend I could beat him with a set of northwestern classics I had gotten at a garage sale. 3-5-7-9 iron with a driver and putter. I literally shot my typical score with that set and I peeled the wrappers off them in the parking lot before the round.

10 clubs would be no problem for me.

Some good answers, some funny answers, and some good funny answers. Just the same, with the putter well that I permanently keep my putter in, I have an open slot in the bag. I would like to see it raised to 15 clubs. For you 10 clubs max people, you can still do your thing, it's not like adding another club option to everybody's bag is going to make it different for you, you can still do what you want to do.

I absolutely would support 15+. There should be no limit. Good for my enjoyment. Good for the equipment industry. When you think about it, it's really silly that there is a rule to a *game* which caps your fun.

Oh sir, I am so sorry that you feel like using clubs for more than 1 type of shot caps your fun. Having more clubs limits your creativity and enjoyment of executing shots that require some imagination and execution.  I am so very sorry you feel excluding this caps your fun.

In that case, I think you might need to upgrade to the Hemi and stiffer suspension in the cart. Maybe even some John Deere counterweights up front. 😆

I think they should drop it to 8.

It would promote thinking & creativity, everyone could carry a Sunday bag and walk, the game would become more about shot making and the price of sets would go down.

Driver, FW wood, Irons 26*, 34*, 42*, 50*, 58*, Putter.

I bet most guys would shoot lower and have more fun.

Cart should be banned unless you have a disability or are over 80 years old.

Wait a second. This simply can't be true. I was reliably informed earlier today on another thread that there is an 'adjustment period' with new clubs. No way you're beating your buddy after 'peeling the wrappers off them in the parking lot before the round'.

Wait ... since when do you peel wrappers off clubs bought in a garage sale?

No joke they were department store Northwesterns that had never been hit! I bought them all for five dollars. I still have them now with one round played haha. They were literally still in a box.

Look like this:

Northwestern Iron Set Vintage Golf Clubs & Shafts for sale | eBay

As far as the my game goes etc I would say I'm a pretty capable near scratch golfer and that day I played smart. The 3 iron was a bullet off the tee on short holes, I actually hit the driver off the fairway a few times for fun. The 9 iron loft was probably 50 degrees so like a standard modern wedge. I chip with that loft the majority of the time as it is. I tried to hit to yardages I could control and I played short on my home course (safer) whenever I had doubts.

I shot a 72 lol. I actually think almost any sub 2-3 capper would do similar. It dumbed the game down for me. Literally the shot discussion in my head would be "hmmm a soft five or a hard 7 here into this green?"

The USGA and R&A approved the 14-club limit in 1936, and it went into effect in 1938. Some of the reasons for the limit:

  • Fear that technology was replacing skill
  • Inherent unfairness, because the wealthy could buy 30 clubs for all occasions, while everyday people had to fend with much less.

Here's the details... Only Fourteen? Be ready for quiz on Ground Hog Day!

Early advice was four woods, 2i-9i, a wedge and a putter. Some dropped a wood or 2i to make room for a Gene Saracen's new fangled sand wedge which had appeared in 1932.

How many clubs do you need? I suspect it would mostly contribute to slow play... one extra club to sort through, more chance for indecision on club selection, one more club the average golfer would not practice enough with to really blend into the game.

Final Thought: By limiting you to 14 clubs, the WRXers are actually helping you improve your score!
