Patrick Reed and Grindworks iron

I have been talking with Patrick for months about doing an interview on his Grindworks irons and I'm hoping that I'll get it done next week while I'm in SoCal for the American Express in La Qunita.

With Grindworks now coming out with new models available to the public, I'd like to get some insight to Patrick's involvement in any of the design aspects.

What I'd like to do is run a little "contest" and have Golfwrx members post the questions they would like me to ask Patrick (about the clubs).  If I select your question, I'll put together a little swag bag for you.  If there is more than one question selected, I'll send each person who's question is chosen some swag.

Let's keep it on topic, which is the Grindworks clubs.

Thanks

Is there something in the sole grind that you were looking when it came to turf interaction?  Bounce, leading edge or other sole characteristics that you liked from previous sets that went into the design?

Are these Kyoei forgings ? If so then one doesn’t need to ask why , they just need to hit one flush. Once.

How many different designs/versions did they prototype before ultimately settling on these 2 to move forward?

I would like to know what is the difference in performance and design of an iron for him, comparing Grindworks with a big OEM, i'm sure he doesn't need the money and marketing, but he may get any iron set the way he likes them from any OEM, they go long ways to give every player what it needs and likes.

So why Grindworks and not a big brand ?

Obviosuly with the soil texture and type changing week to week , what were the biggest things he looked for that will work week to week. Think this is the a big  difference that’s overlooked between club golfers and high level players . See many club golfers build a bag around their course versus building 14 clubs that will work in Mexico during the rainy season & st Andrew’s during a drought

Simple question I'd like to see asked:  GW seems like they make fantastic irons, as do many other OEM's and boutique/specialty iron makers (NCW, Artisan, etc).  What was it that drew him into GW and specifically if there was something about them as a company that was more attractive than the other options out there.

Thanks Greg!

How many iterations did Patrick test himself for performance before reaching something that was played in a PGA tournament - how much of his preference of look and feel went into the production models?

Was the logo made in conjunction with Grindworks or was it P Reeds before the collab? I think we've seen it on the artisan wedges. What inspired it?

purely cosmetic - but these have a very retro vibe to me - something that Hogan would have produced - so my question would be if he is into the older classic iron designs

I have been following his WITB for some time and was always interested in the swapping back and forth from a few different irons... often seemed to land back into the MB1 irons.. These Grindworks irons seem to share some similar looks to those... What is the difference in the grind on these Grindworks irons that have solidified a spot in the bag?

Q:. Was there specific details regarding bounce/turf interaction you wanted to incorporate into the design of the irons?

In order to get these particular irons suited to your preferences and needs, did you pick characteristics you have liked in previous irons? Not necessary to name particular clubs (unless want to do so) , just curious if this was sort of an opportunity to combine favorite ideas of clubs you had success with in the past? Thanks for taking the time and best wishes for continued success.

Greg, while you're there, ask him why he switched to his scotty cameron tour rat from his odyssey haha! He's been lighting it up since the switch - maybe that's why he did it! Excited to hear about this interview with p reed. Thanks!

Are you going to let Greg touch your clubs, and are you testing out any other grindworks clubs in addition to your irons?

Thanks Greg, looking forward to reading the interview when it is posted. I am curious how challenging it was to develop the irons with Grindworks based in Japan and Patrick in Texas. How long before he had the clubs in hand that he envisioned from start to finish?

In the bag, at the moment:
Callaway Mavrik 10.5* Aldila Rogue White 130 MSI 60g Stiff
Ping G410 5 wood 17.5* UST Elements Chrome 7F4 set at 16.5*
