Is anyone NOT impressed with the Apex 21's (irons)?

I have no idea really. Just something I read not long ago. I've played so many different types of irons over the last 33 years it's embarrassing. I've never know one particular type of iron to promote a shank though. That's one I haven't run across, and I'm pretty flat. Oh well, sorry,I'm steering the train off the tracks.

It's not that the iron heads with small C dimension promote a shank, but they provide less margin against a shank.  A head with a C dimension of 1.2" only provides about 1/3 inch of margin between edge of the ball and the hosel.  Not bad, but not great.  Some modern blades still have C dimension around 1.1" giving around 1/4 inch of margin.  Ouch.  Not much room there.  No reason to make things that hard.  Back to OP's scheduled program.

The C Dimension is measured at the sole.  It should give you a bit more than that 1/4" or 1/3".  I suppose I could do some trig to calculate exactly how much, but I'm lazy this evening.  🙂

I see what you are getting at, but the curved crease where the face meets the hosel lines up vertically with the hosel endpoint at the sole.  If the ball engages the curved area as the face transitions into the hosel, it affects the shot.  Maybe not a full shank, but a poor strike peeling offline.

What you describe is why I've stayed away from certain irons.  The share of hoselus lateralus shots apportioned to me is on my mind enough that I prefer to avoid tempting fate, so to speak.  🙂

 

Interestingly, I've had no problem with smaller clubs like FG-17 or Muirfields, which are almost certain to be in that 1.0" range, if only due to their size.  Go figure.

Bending the lofts a couple degrees weak, mostly in the short clubs, is no problem.  Especially considering the iron frame is forged, which is easy to bend.  That's what I'd do anyway.  I've been using iron sets with a 45 degree PW for years now and it fits perfectly into a 45 - 50 - 55 - 60 spread at the bottom of the bag.

so combo sets lofts are a bit different from non-combo sets. Does callaway just adjust the loft? or do they do something more? I just want my pw to be 45 and 7 to be 31 or 32.
