Nobody knows playing in rain like the NW’ers so...

Maybe this is supposed to be posted in the gear forum and I did a search and a lot of it is people down south playing in humidity and that type of stuff.
But being in the NW for 20 years there’s hardly no people more aware of what it’s like to play in the rain than us.

So I concider most of y’all from the NW as experts in this area and ask your expertise.

What are you guys using for gloves in the rain? How do you keep your grips dry?
I watched a guy throw a brand new Taylor Made driver into the bushes a couple years ago at Gold Mountain and he never did retrieve it. Trying not to let rain be the thing that pushes me off golf for months out of the year.
Any input is greatly appreciated.

+3 on the FJ rain gloves. Leather gloves get ruined and, don't work well when wet. I, generally, play without a glove, but, most of my really wet rounds were played with corded grips.

If you are a push cart guy, a rain cover helps to keep the bag (and grips dry), and, Clicgear cart mitts will help to keep the hands warm. If it isn't too windy, an umbrella helps, too.

fwiw, I have a Rain Tek rain cover, and, I attach my towel to the handle and, tuck it under the cover to keep the towel dry and to keep the top from getting flipped over if it is windy.

Make it +4 on the RJ gloves. I don't have the world's best rain gear, however have become a convert to the TrueLinks Original in terms of waterproof shoes. They aren't as optimal as the Bandons or other shoes meant for torential rain, but with light rain or standing water have held up well, are the most comfortable golf shoes my fat feet have ever been in, and their customer service/local feel have made me an unoffical brand evangelist.

+6 FJ rain gloves. I also go with MCC grips.

I hold out as long as I can with a regular glove. Waterproof bag helps as does a good rain hood.

In the PNW wet often comes with cold. I find the FJ rain glove crazy cold once on, so I will peel them off in the cold between shots and get my hands into water proof mitts or into my pockets. The mitts work well with a cart if you get the velcro style that stays attached to  the carts handles.

I mostly carry, so pockets are more my go to but I have even considered getting football style hand warmer to shove my hands into between shots and really cold wet days.

Yeah, I haven't quite solved the cold and wet situation yet.  Those FJ rain gloves are like little humidifiers when it's cold and raining hard.

I keep some HotHands in my jacket pockets, but if those get wet, they are worthless.  I've had some success dropping those into the small plastic ziploc bags that you get at the bulk spice display in the store.  They need air to work properly, though, so I have to leave it partially open, and on a super wet day, the gloves get pretty full of water and it gets in.

I've had notions of buying some GoreTex fabric on eBay and having my sis (who's super handy with the sewing machine) make some sleeves for them so they can breathe.

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

Obviously I need to give the Footjoy glove a try.  It doesn't rain down here nearly as much as it does in the northern part of the Willamette Valley, so I just rotate regular gloves when it rains.  I do have some knit rain gloves I bought years ago.  They worked great, but you have to get them wet and that would always make my hands cold.  I haven't worn them in years.

Ive tried the FJ gloves and have never fell in love with them. I carry 6-8 gloves and hang them from my umbrella during the round and change them out often. Lots of towels in various places to keep things as dry as possible.

With the MCC grips, for me they are worst grips in the rain, but Ive installed 100s of them here on the wet side of Oregon so people are liking them. We are all different. I prefer light tackiness in my grips and I dont get that with the MCC.

+1 to these hand warmers as well. I never have much luck with hot hands (I feel like every third or fourth are the ones that actually work). I wear this just loose enough to easily slide around my waist. Flip it on my back when I'm swinging, then rotate around the front while walking.

A buddy found a cheap electric hand warmer that he uses off of Amazon. It's a bit bulky for my taste to have in my pocket, but if in a cart it throws off a lot of heat while holding it.

Being part of a mudder group who will play whenever the courses allow I have two thoughts:

Rain gloves are great, and only using them a few times a year they last forever. In 20 some years I think I'm on my third pair.

Rechargeable hand warmers are perfect with cold wet gloves. Nowadays they are lightweight, sleek, pretty darn cheap and easily last an entire round. Some of them get bonus points for being portable charging blocks for power failures and whatnot.

Bonus tip: I got a heated vest from Santa. I've used it 3 times. It's amazing! The cold weather game has changed.

OP, how can you be in the NW for 20 years and not have rain gloves?

I got this one.....

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DJ1BV86/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It differs from many of the other ones because it uses a generic power supply. I can even power it from my hand warmer!

  • 2 weeks later...

I bought the Ocoopa one as well.

This one: https://www.amazon.com/OCOOPA-Warmers-Rechargeable-Long-Lasting-Electronic/dp/B07YC8CVWV/ref=sr_1_16?crid=3O0P3FXCBCWJ2&dchild=1&keywords=hand+warmers&qid=1611662338&sprefix=hand+%2Caps%2C188&sr=8-16

It lasts "long enough", I set it on medium. I doubt any of them will as long as they claim.

Have a great trip!
