Diy wedge etching- cheap easy custom designs(video added)

I have searched all over and havent found any examples of electro etching wedges with a salt solution.  This is very commonly done with knifes and other things. So i started to experiment.    

 

Warning- this process will produce hazardous gases. Please do in well ventilated area with a real mask and eye protection.  

 

Video should be posted this weekend.

The cool thing about this process is i didnt have to buy anything and it took maybe 5 minutes after a vinyl stencil was made.

Woah! Definitely interested in how you did this.  I got into stamping and painting my wedges last year while I was stuck inside for quarantine.  I would definitely try this since I have a relatively new set of vokeys I hadnt stamped yet.

I should have a video up Saturday(likely). It was much easier than I expected, just be careful when doing it.   

 

I used a batter charger on the 2amp setting so it wasn't very powerful but etched much quicker than expected.   The only trick will be getting vinyl stencils to use.   Etsy has tons of options where you can order custom designs.   It took my wife a only few minutes to adjust images I sent her and cut out the stencil on her Cameo Silhouette.

Did you mask off the whole head and submerge for the etching?

I did not. It was easier to just use saltwater with cotton on top for me. I have all the footage and working on editing.

Do you know how deep the etching Is?  Looks great!

Surprised you could get it to etch that deep with the cotton swab approach. Looks great.

I dont know how deep it us but you might be able to tell in the video.

Very cool!  I’m sure my wife would love for me to try this.....I’m thinking probably our dining room table on a Saturday morning. Probably put on some Pantera on the SONOS as well so I can concentrate.

My wife is quick to help and the more creative 1/2. Dining room table while eating breakfast.  One hand electified and other one spooning cereal. 

 

This is definitely an outdoor project.

My wife makes them on her cameo Silhouette. You might have a friend or neighbor that has one or a cricut.   You can get custom vinyl stencils from many people on Etsy for under $10.

Oracle 651 vinyl was what my wife used. She has the sandblasting vinyl which is more durable but its harder to cut and weed.
