Will there be a unicorn driver in 2021 or just more of the same

I don't think there will be one unicorn driver for everyone. There are so many drivers these days that certain people will have certain unicorns depending on their needs in a driver.

Much more likely to see a new "unicorn" training aid than driver.  There will be a new "orange whip" or "impact snap" every couple years. I don't think there's as much unexplored territory for club designs.

Unicorn and sleeper will be srixon zx7!! Better performance at a cheaper price point.

I believe the new ZX7 is going to be either $529 or $549.  So it's not cheaper, but it is a very good driver.

Don't give the OEMs ideas... the turbulators are ugly enough... We don't need a freaking gold horn on the middle of a driver...

I tend to agree. The science has been so strong for so many years now, and because of the guidelines on CT and such, there's only so far we can go from here.

The correct answer is of course not, but there will be plenty who get caught up in marketing hype and state how great their new driver is, only to slowly fade away back to their old reliable, or better yet, start the whole cycle over again next year...wash, rinse and repeat.

This is the corect answer and has been for a while now.

Technology on drivers has been maxed out for years, however there will be plenty of gimmicks and talks of "speed", "forgiveness" and other catch phrases that make golfers dream of longer, straight drivers.

Unless the USGA & R&A increases the COR and head driver head size and/or the laws of physics change no driver will be longer than the other (unless you go full DeChambeau).

But what they have been making progress on is forgiveness on 'off centre' hits, adjustably  AND - this is the big AND - delivering optimal performance in the most aesthetically pleasing package - form and function in one package.

For me personally, i noticed the heads to be "better" around 2016/2017 than ones previously. I started gaining like 5-7 yards. Clubs like the Epic, the M2, Ping G LST etc...I was hitting those a bit further than the previous drivers i had.

When i went to Carlsbad i hit the Epic 10yds further than my Ping Anser with the same shaft at the same length. At Trackman sessions that year i did the same with the TMAG M's and the Ping

So my feeling is around then they just all started juicing like cyclists for the tour de france...haha

Since then i haven't seen any gains

I disagree somewhat. Last years SIM was as close as a unicorn to me and many others simply due to the fact it offered something not many drivers dont these days. Low spin, fade biased-actual cg toe side of center, and a great sound. Not for everyone but for faster players who miss is a hook, its unicornish.

I guess the only way that happens in 2021 is if you've been searching for something that hasn't been there in the past. TSi3 is, for me, the single best golf club ever made. I'm completely blown away by it. It makes every other driver look terribly ugly, the sound is better than anything I've ever hit, with SIM and the 905R being the only thing that's close to as good and the feel is just indescribable. It just feels perfect off the face. It keeps the spin down on low strikes, it actually launches noticeable lower that other drivers in the same loft which is a miracle for my delivery and ball speed wise, it seems even a tick faster than anything else. In all fairness to the last point, I haven't hit SIM2 or Epic Speed so we'll see if that's just standard fare for this years releases. So that's it - TSi3 is my 2021 unicorn. It's already become an unhealthy obsession lol

Golfers are a marketer's dream. Shiny new gimmicks, then player gets giddy, uses and it's the bestest ever...then a few miss hits, a little dirty and the old unicorn comes back out of the closet or they buy into the next shiny new toy. Wash, rinse and repeat.

If someone finds a new driver head to work better than anything made in the last few years, that's awesome as this game is mostly mental and confidence is a big deal.

But if you 500 or more hoping to hit a new driver a lot farther or straighter...well no wonder it's named after something that doesn't exist.

Heck, I'm just as guilty as the next golf nut when it comes to shiny ans new clubs. As just understand after years of buying or trying the latest and greatest, that new clubs these days are more shiny new toys rather than score changing unicorns.

now imagine you wrote this the day before the first titanium driver hit the tour.

bottom line: nobody knows if there are any great discoveries to be made or not. Wedges were wedges until Sarazen put a flange on one. Then it took roughly 35 years for the 588 and its rounded edge to revolutionize them again. Revolutionary Golf innovations come about every 30-45 years in a particular type of club, but that’s not the same thing as they never come. It’s ridiculous - by definition - to “predict” someone else’s genius idea. You’ll totally be right - until you’re not. Of course there is more innovation coming. We just don’t know when.
