Forged Driving Irons

merv

Recommended Posts

I am looking for recommendations for the best forged driving irons.

i have tried the Titleist 718 tmb but I just don’t like the feel of it, i have used Mizuno and Titleist blades in the past, currently gaming Titleist AP2 and I think these feel very different to the TMB.

What are the best feeling driving irons out there?

I will agree with others. Not sure if any driving irons are forged but the Srixon feels excellent, forgiving and nice flight

TaylorMade Qi10 10.5*
Callaway BB Alpha 816 16*
Srixon Z H45 Hybrid 19*
Srixon ZX Utility 23*
Srixon ZX5 Mk II 5-AW

Callaway Jaws Raw Black 54 & 58
TaylorMade Spider Tour Black
Bridgestone Tour RX

The new Callaway X Forged UT is the best feeling one I’ve hit. It has more of a “crack” at impact compared to the “clicks” feel of others.

I have a review coming soon.

I also did not like the TMB. Felt harsh. Srixons I like off tees but wide sole not my favorite off turf.

Tried a bunch and the ones that felt the best, performed well off tee or turf and come in overall a reasonably compact package were the 2018 Callaway X Forged UT. I’m sure the new ones are great too but I was able to get a 24 and 27 of the 2018s in like-new shape at a great price.

Another vote for Callaway X Forged UT. As another poster already said; most UT/driving irons aren’t going to be a pure forged iron, they are typically designed with some techy features and/or hollow body. But that X Forged UT feels very good even on slight miss hits. Have not tried the 2021 x forged UT, but have ordered an 18 degree 2021 UT. Have heard good things about the Srixon as well.

Been playing a 2 Iron DI for about 4 years.

Gamed a U65 for a long time, but as my swing speed increased, I started overpowering the Miyazaki shaft, and could never dial it in again.

Tried the U500 with the Hzrdus Smoke Black, and hated the feel. I like my T-MB 4I with a C-Taper Lite, so maybe it was the shaft.

Am now gaming an older TM Tour Preferred UDI with a C-Taper Lite 110 Stiff in it. There is a reason why these still command big money on the used market. They just work. I don't hit it off the deck much, but 220-230 off the tee, and very forgiving.

Titleist TSR3 9* (+1, neutral), Ventus Red TR 6X

And they can be had now for $125

^ This.

I've tried them all as I don't use a hybrid. I've been using driving irons for years now. I've used a couple PXG 0311X driving irons throughout the years (and most recently went back to it - I tried to replace it and now it's back in the bag). It feels amazing and if you can find one, they're fairly cheap now. It's a monster off the tee and they're incredibly forgiving.

I have an 18 and 21 degree X-Forged '18... not interested at all in replacing and really like them. Have the same shaft as the rest of my irons (PX 6.0) and love the control.

I've had the Honma, it felt worse to me than the T-MB.  Another vote for the X-forged 18. I have a 27* and it feels better than my T-MB.

Love this club. 0 index lefty and tried the 18 and 21 x forged ut, tmb 718, srixon u85/zx, Taylor made udi, Titleist 500 and PXG driving irons.

Distance - the 500 Titleist was the longest with TM udi and UT 21 in second

Forgiveness - PXG wins here with UT 21 and srixon were second

Feel - Srixon zx and 85 were perhaps the best but UT21 and PXG could win depending on preference.

The Apex UT 21 all around was fantastic in a best in class low offset forgiving for what it is club. It also was amazing from deck, a major issue for the UDI which is great off tee but thats it.

PXG and Titleist 500 both launch high with a lot of offset which im not a fan of.

The srixons were great especially the reworked zxU but shorter off tee with a bit more launch, perhaps if it fits your window it could be tops but its a great second for me.

I don’t think any hollow irons are forged , but.  The best driving iron made that gets zero mention is the TM Gapr Lo.  I found the Vertical center of gravity to be the lowest of  any.  This makes it miles easier to hit , and much higher flight.  Thing is a cannon.  A d it doesn’t feel like a rock on less than perfect hits like TMb or the ping cross over.

I have a 20deg u85 and 24 and 27deg x forged, and they are very different clubs (while not like for like, I can’t imagine the x forged 3 iron would be that different looking and performing from the 4). The Srixon is a tee club, and the sole is super-wide compared to the x forged. The x forged pass muster as long iron replacements (I go into the x forged irons at 6 and 7, then apex mb for the rest) and not just as “driving irons” in my opinion, whereas I can’t say that about the Srixon.
