It appears that most golfers are obsessed with driver distance because the posts in the equipment thread seems to be about 75% about drivers.  You do realize that in a round of 18 you'll probably hit your driver at most 15 times.  Based on the number of shots taken around the green it should be more about wedges and putters... of course, there's a separate putter section so nix that one.

With that said, what's going to be the hot driver this year?  I'm guessing the Epic Speed what with all the options... standard, Max, and Max LS.

Been watching a lot of Youtube videos on the new Epics and looks like that is what I'm leaning towards.. Specifically the Max..  Have the Cobra Speedzone currently and wanting to switch back to Callaway again..

Bingo... I'm thinking the Epic Max will be perfect for me as well.  Currently, playing the Rogue and as much as I like it, I think the Epic Max will suit me better.

Other than my putter, my driver is the most used club on number of shots per round. So the obsession makes sense to me. Can't putt for dough if you never leave the tee box.

And best driver this year will be a Ping.

Ping G425 looks good, but I think the Epic Speed might be a better fit for me.

Yep, in an average round I'll hit putter 32 times (although probably 15 of those are tap ins after yet another miss)....so let's say 17 real putts. Driver gets 12-13 hits usually. Each wedge gets 3 or 4 hits.

That is why I have 14 putters, and only 4 drivers.  Maybe 4 wedges total, and just one each of the fairways, hybrids and irons.

I need more drivers.

Drivers are sexy and distance sells! Bragging about your driver distance is the same as bragging about how much you bench press.

Well it's just a fact that hitting it farther will lower your scores. When I went from carrying my driver from 260/270 to 290 it made a huge difference in my ability to get close to or under par consistently. I don't hit driver that often on my home course, but the holes I do distance flat out makes your ability to score better. My chances of putting it inside of 20 feet from inside of 150 is much greater than 170.

I agree, people hitting driver 15 times in an 18-hole round should have much greater concerns, such as finding a nice husband and achieving equal pay in the workplace

If you happen to have any sort of equipment or apparel deal, I feel you now may be in danger of losing it.

15 times? You must have some long par 3s at your course. Also, I saw a test of the Epic Speed vs the first Epic, and the difference was 4 yards. That is one yard per year since the first Epic came out. I currently play the Ping G400 Max, and unless I find a driver at least ten yards longer, or one that finds the fairway more often (I doubt it), I can find a lot more things to do with $500.

Let's face it, most people love hitting the big stick.

That being said I think the G425 will be one most people will get this year.

11 on my home course.  There are a couple shorter par 4's where the distance of a driver presents some risk and I can just use an iron off the tee and score well.

As far as drivers this year, methinks the Titleist TSi3/2 and the 425 will be it.  Fair disclosure: have not seen or hit the G425 (yet - and I will because I am a total whore).  I bag the TSi3.

I agree with TigerintheWoods in that extra distance has a huge impact.

As for why we look at drivers, this picture explains it all.  It explains club ho'ing perfectly.

I worry about driver distance, but since my last 2 surgeries, I have really been focusing on my iron distance.

I lost almost 2 clubs because of surgery that cut through my abdomen and am in rhe process of rebuilding my swing...I finally feel like I got my iron distance back.

And if you go to the putter forum, it's more about the best looking putters and not "what will improve my strokes gained on the green"...

Honestly, there aren't a ton of conversation on here about actually getting better at golf...
