Shaft Won’t Stay in Hosel

Johnny Golfball

Recommended Posts

Currently swapping a set of shafts from iblades into blueprints. After prepping the shaft and hosel with epoxy, I can’t get the shaft to stay “seated” in the hosel.

When pressing firmly into the hosel, the shaft wants to slide up roughly a 1/4”. The best way I can explain the feeling is like a  “pressure” keeping the shaft from finding the end of the hosel.

Been trying to wrap my head around the reason. First thought was too much epoxy. All other thoughts were mere guesses.

I’ve reshafted a handful of clubs before but this is the first time I’ve ran into this. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

It sounds as though the air is not releasing through the shafts. Do the shafts have grips on them?  Is there a blockage (old epoxy etc) in the shaft?

both can prevent the air escaping and give a “cushion” feeling.
This is why you need to remove old epoxy from within the tip of the shaft.

Not to mention one never knows how much weight the epoxy will add.  Drill it all out and poke a hole in the butt end...

No grips on the shaft. There are swing weights at the end of the shafts though. Sounds like the center hole was plugged with old epoxy creating that “air cushion” barrier.

Would that make sense?

Drill the tip weight completely out.  Do not leave any of it in the tip.

The DRY FIT them and check swing weight. Unless you are OK with lead tape.

Weight each component and make sure each is exactly what you need.  If the shafts are constant weight make sure they are the same.  the heads should change ~7g for each and the grips the same.  Then if the shafts are the proper length the SW should be close enough to be good.  And the static weight should go up/down 7g per club.

you dont have to drill the tip weight completely out but there needs to be some way for air to get through the tip of the shaft.  Grip on or off is irrelevent

Then how is one to know how much each tip weight weighs?  And I did not say the grips needed to come off. but the end must be clear so the pressure can be released.  Might as well take the grip off and make sure all the grips are the same weight.  They can vary by 3 to 4 g.

he never asked any questions about swingweighting.  My point was that there needs to be some way for the air to escape.

I realize that but why leave it there and then have to figure out how to SW and static weight the clubs.  Much easier if one balances each the components  separately and then dry assembles.

If steel shafts heat should soften epoxy so you can pull tip weights out. Then clean inside of shaft.

That's how I do it when re-shafting clubs. Heat gun on the tip a bit, then use a needle-nose pliers to grab the tip weight and twist off. If you need to use the tip weight again, put it in the vise and use a tiny diameter drill bit to make a hole in it so air will pass through.

TLDR - find thyself a drill bit and go in from each end of the shaft.  If you can blow air through the shaft, you won't have the problem you described.
