JT dropped by Ralph Lauren

I find myself "liking" a lot of posts in this discussion, and no time to like enough of them, and reading through a lot of this on a Sunday morning I thought it was interesting that a lot of them seem contradictory but they really aren't - just different takes on both sides for the most part.  Maybe it's "pre-moderation" keeping the weird stuff out that would start all sorts of back and forth (so that's turning out to be a good change and keeps me out of trouble, lol).  It's a real discussion!

It’s all about the money for them, that’s why he was dropped. In this day and age have to protect the company image, that’s all they care about.

His choice of words would be completely forgotten if they didn't drop him. It was covered by golf channel for 12 hours after but thats it. There was no story on ESPN, nothing on CNN, Fox, Good Morning America, no Facebook posts calling for action on JT or RL. RL dropping him and the eye rolling and mild backlash is the story, not what he said.

 

I understand RL is much larger than golf, and appeals more toward the LBGTQ than anything golf ever will. But RL lost in this ordeal and the PR, not JT.

Just to clarify, golf was an $84 billion industry in 2019.  RL’s $6.7 billion is tiny by comparison.  
 

Golf/JT won’t suffer, and in the case of RL the adage applies: any press is good press. It’s simply free advertising.

RL dropping JT is all about saving image and $$$.  RL’s golf apparel department probably accounts for a small percentage of what they sell, but probably accounts for a good chunk of what they spend on sponsorships.  In a time when industries are suffering from the pandemic, it’s one way to end a partnership while solidifying the brand’s image for the larger, broader brand customer.

 

While the PC patrol may have something to say about it, we won’t see the “true” brands in golf dropping JT.  I just really feel bad for JT as the kid seems likable.  There are other names on tour I’d rather see get dropped, but save that for another discussion. 😂
