Driving Irons for slower swings?

Recommended Posts

Short tight holes, I usually opt for 3W or hybrid. DI’s to me have too small a sweet spot & misses go nowhere whereas 3W/hybrid is more forgiving. Any slower SS players use a DI off the tee?

Live in the California  coast and used a Titliest TMB 3i for a while. Never liked the looks of a hybrid at address and a FW launched too high into the wind most times.

Have you hit it? Impressions?

Yes, I have hit it a few times now. As with anything, finding the right shaft is key. Mid launch and quite forgiving given the compact size. Although, the cavity back is visible and may not appeal to some. The SIM UDI 2/3 would be another option. Much more appealing look at address, and is not as hard to hit as it looks.

I thought about a driving iron this summer.  Tried a couple out but decided to stick with a hybrid as it's a little more versatile where I play.  I have good swing speed, which I think you need for a driving iron in the 16-18* range

^^^^^ I agree with this.  Why carry a driving iron for 1-2 shots a round when you can carry a hybrid that works better from the rough and fairway?  Maybe search for a lower launching hybrid instead?

To answer your question, no, I don't use a driving iron.  I have toyed around with them over the years, but I don't generate enough swing speed to get enough backspin on the ball for any reasonable carry distance.  Same reason I don't bother with a 4 iron or even a 5 iron unless the ball is sitting up real nice.

There are no driving irons for slower swings. :classic_biggrin:

OK, if you're going to use it JUST off the tee you can probably tee it high enough to make it somewhat useful. Off the deck ? Forget it.

If you don't have a high enough swing speed the lower lofted irons won't get in the air high enough for them to do you any good.

That is just a(nother) reason to use hybrids. They are more forgiving and made to help you get it up in the air.

High CH speed ? What eva,,,,,,,,,,,,, :classic_wink:

Had a decision to make yesterday. Short tight hole. Choices were DI, mini driver or hybrid. Wasn’t hitting my hybrid well yesterday so immediately ruled it out. Just bought the mini driver last week and first time out on a course so I went with that. Hit it towards the heel but it cut back into the FW so mission accomplished. DI came in handy a few holes later as I had to hit a low cut under some trees branches and pulled off the shot. I can see 1-2 shots per round where either the mini driver or the DI will be used. Not versatile enough to keep in the bag normally.

The Mizuno MP-18 MMC Fli-Hi and Srixon ZU85 driving irons are / were both available down to a 6i.  If you are slow SS, then low lofted irons should not be in your iron repertoire, IMO, YMMV.

I use 3 of the new style hollow driving irons/hybrid irons from Maltby, the KE4 Tour FDI heads.  I put Nunchuck wood shafts in mine in 24, 21.5, 19 degree lofts. I had these shafts already and tried them while experimenting with the first build.  It helps that you can adjust the head weight.  These work as my 5i - 3i, and are some of my favorite clubs in the bag.  The 19 degree is used mostly off the Tee.  They go apprx. 215 (225 off the t), 200, 185 yards respectively off the deck.

I could play most course without my driver and 4 wood and score well with these, they have a great ball flight and go really straight.

The best part is that 19 degree off the tee is occasionally a little short, but always straight, so a real fairway finder.  I never get in trouble with this club off the tee, unlike my driver.

These three clubs are a blast to hit and have given me some of the best golf shots of my life including my first hole in 1 two years ago.

I have two driving irons an 18* callaway UT and a 0311xf 4iron at 20*. The 0311 travels just as long, easy to hit both off tee and deck but really hard to shape unless I want a mean draw. DI’s are awesome for us slower swing speed guys (I’m a 99-102) because they become incredibly dependable off the tee. The callaway while smaller head wise is so easy to shape and hit that if my irons are on, hitting that thing almost guarantees playing off the fairway. Misses don’t get out of hand right to left. Should be a staple in our amateur bags if you ask me.

as an FYI - I have a evenflow blue hybrid shaft in my PXG and project x rifle in my 18*. Will probably out the PXG up for sale since I need to stop going backs Ned forth.

5 - PW irons - Miura PP9005g - TT Elevate Tour Stiff

Im mid to upper 90s SS right now. Used to be in the low 100s. I've tinkered with different driving / utility irons in the past. I had an old 18 degree T Zoid Fli Hi I played for a while and loved.

I tried the Sim DHY earlier this year to get a utility back in my bag. I didn't get along with the lighter stock shaft and my occasional toe misses were punished a bit too much

I've recently gone to playing a Cleveland Launcher UHX 18 degree with a Recoil 95 F4 and I'm really enjoying it. Reminds me old my old T Zoid in shape just with a bit more offset, a hotter face, and a graphite shaft instead of steel

I can hit draws and fades with it. I can hit low runners when I need them. I can't really hit it "high" unless I play a cut just right or it's off a tee or sitting up in the first cut but it's a nice mid trajectory by default.

I had very good results with the Taylormade GAPR Mid in the situations the OP describes. The problem I had is that for some reason I had occasional shanks with it that destroyed my confidence.

I don’t have the same issue with other DIs (or long irons) I’ve tried.

If I weren’t scared to hit it it would still be in my bag.

I also liked the original Ping Crossover. But hated the sound and feel.
