Hey @jmagri78, I think we talked in your post on the ER2. I enjoy both putters, but I'm in love with the looks and consistency of the ER2. I keep the Spider on hand because I've used Spiders for a majority of my golfing life and always seem to putt very well with them, even when they aren't fit to me, like the one I currently own. So it's my guilty security blanket!

Changed the hosel settings on the Super Hybrid this weekend to (N/S). With a couple sessions on the Ventus Blue now I was noticing the launch was a tad low for what I use the club for, which is mainly hitting into greens. Changing the settings increased the launch and spin a touch, and it's now ideal. Shaft is far more anti-left than the 95X AD-DI I previously used, and Also launches lower, leading to the aforementioned hosel changes.

Nice bag, bro.  Loved that you have different manufacturers' clubs in your bag; I sort of do the same.  Loved the ER2 putter; may be looking to upgrade to that or a half mallet type if they have it.

Was curious that you have a 50 and then a 60 deg wedge; no issues with gapping between them?

Enjoy.

@MGN01 Thanks! I'm a believer in playing what works, not necessarily what I have an affection for, which brings me to that ugly duckling of a Cleveland wedge!

Anyways, I dropped a sandwedge a while back because I very much dislike hitting hybrid off the tee, and much prefer to hit a low screaming 3 iron as a "safe" shot off the tee, and whenever I'd swap out my hybrid for the 3 iron I felt like I always needed the hybrid for shots. So, I decided that in order to have both in the bag I would need to really work on my wedge partial swings, and add some variability in the wedge game. I think the Hi-toe gives me that, and the CG16, while old and ugly, is wonderful off a teebox and the fairway.

Looking forward to the Spring ball testing as well when the new releases hit. I used the TP5x last year and loved it, but have used the Pro V1x for the years prior. I've also played here and there with some Bridgestone, but am genuinely intrigued in the new TP5x and Pro V1x. If the new ProV1x can feel softer like the last TP5x line, that would be incredible.

What does ball testing look like? Do you go somewhere? Looking to try out some more balls this year after years of loving the AVX. Thanks.

@IvyHackathon You can get some initial impressions on your local golf shop's launch monitor for things like spin rate, but the biggest part comes in testing outside to see things like actual spin rate off the turf, launch window, green side spin, etc. Feel will also probably be different off the turf than off a launch monitor mat. Usually not huge improvements to be seen over the last ball, but the last iteration of the TP5x made me switch over from the Pro V1x, so I enjoy doing testing the new ones out seeing as it cost roughly $12 to buy a sleeve and play around on the monitor and course.

Well I ordered 2 KBS Tour 130X Black Nickel shafts for my wedges to reshaft and extend them both to 35.75" to match my pitching wedge as a little experiment. I have used Dynamic Gold in my wedges for as long as I can remember but have previously used the Tour in my previous set of irons and loved them, so I figured I'd give it a go.

Also switched back to the standard Mavrik 9* head in the driver, and am having good results so far.

Will upload pictures once everything is finished and final!

Hit the new Pro V1x this weekend. I enjoyed it a lot. Felt softer than the previous version, and only slightly higher driver spin than '19 TP5x. I don't love the idea looking at iron spin off mats, but the spin did go up from the '19 TP5x I was playing and is now in a really nice range compared to being on the lower end of ideal with the '19 TP5x (for comparison reasons only, I don't take strike off mats into much account as stated earlier). I will be switching to it unless the '21 TP5x is crazy, but I don't see that happening.

Also got to play with both Mavrik heads, and settled on the Standard Mavrik 9* for good. I did play the subzero with the heavy weight in the back, and will throw numbers below for both heads with the '21 Pro V1x. I played a heavier swingweight in the standard to fit my feel, which I believe the reason SS down a hair. Mishits were much better off Standard Mavrik, with average distance difference being around 10 yards shorter than SZ. Balls I knew would be hard toe hooks with the SZ still manged to find the left edge of the fairway most times. I'll trade more fairways for 10 yards.

Both tested with Ventus Black 7X tipped 1" in N/-2 setting:

Mavrik SZ 9*: 10.8 average LA, 2310 average spin, 114 SS.

Mavrik 9*: 12.1 average LA, 2580 average spin, 111 SS.

Will upload pictures of driver and wedges once assembly is done on the wedges this week!

I've played with a KBS Tour in my 56* for quite a few years and have had no complaints. Spin/feel have been excellent. This year I'm actually going the opposite direction as you and I'm going to give DG a try across the board for wedges since I'm also switching to new irons shafts in the AMT X100.

Will be curious to see how you like the 130X! I think with the higher balance point of that shaft, it could be a good transition if you're planning to play them a bit longer.

I'm definitely hanging on to the DGs! They're like my safety blanket in the wedges, and I've used them forever and had great results. I'm sure you'll love them. I found a killer deal for the black Tour 130X shafts, and I had the Tour 130Xs in my previous irons and liked them a lot, so I had to give it a go. And I agree, I've been wanting to extend my wedges a hair as I play all my other irons a little long, and I thought the balance point would be the way to go. Looks like they arrived at my house today, so I'm gonna see if I can find some time to get to work!

Picked this up on a whim today. $143 new in plastic. Even if I find I don’t like it, couldn’t pass it up at that price. I do think I’ll have to have the lie angle adjusted upright after tinkering a little in my living room tonight, but nonetheless another fun toy.

Ordered a Ventus Blue 8X to start tinkering with in the 3W. Looking forward to it, as I absolutely love the Ventus Profile in my Driver and Super Hybrid. Going to be tough, the RIPx flat out performs, but every part of me is leaning towards the Ventus to make the total transition.  Also going back to the Aldila shaft in my 3i. I've flipped back and forth between the $ Taper and the RIP as well as some others, and I feel the RIP gives me the most variety for now.

Update to come after tinkering!

Only other change I can see before green grass is possibly a Stability Shaft in the putter. Not sure about it though. Been doing a lot of research, but obviously not something I can just go try. If I were to do it I would have them install it and get it to spec. If anyone reads this far and has any insights on if they're really worth it, drop a line!

  • 3 weeks later...

Well it's been a while, here's an update.

Was having such great success with the Hi Toe 60* that I also made the move in my 50*. Love it so far. Play them both at the same length as my PW and am also liking that!

Went back to the RIP Alpha 105X in my 3i, and its just like home. I naturally play a draw, and if I need to hit a fade out of the tee box I go right to that club rather than making an adjustment with the driver. Seriously, it's a 225-240 yard (depending on how hard I go after it) baby fade every time. If you can turn that shaft over in an iron, you're more man than I.

I decided to shelve the idea of the stability shaft in the putter for now. Maybe some day, but I'm rolling it well so I'm not gonna mess with it for now.

Finally, I'm winning indoor league currently with one week to go. If I don't choke this week at Valderrama, I'm looking at a new driver coming my way with prize money and trading my current one in with the stock shaft, not my Ventus. Currently considering the Epic Max LS to continue the Callaway driver train, or the G425 Max. I owned the G400 Max and loved it, seemed like you couldn't miss the fairway, and hotmelt fixes that sound.

Will update one final picture once the bag is set for the year with all new acquisitions.

Well, I hit the G425 Max in an attempt to move on from Mavrik, which I found okay but not great, and actually preferred the G400 Max which I've played previously. So, I saved some coin and bought one of those instead. I have a Ventus Blue 7X coming for it. When I get it to the spec I want, I will upload final specs and bag pictures just in time for the season to hopefully get going!

curious what your number are with g400 max

I love my G400 max but I am higher swing speed not golfwrx high but I know my g400 max is spinnier than my LTD pro. I just can't get over how easy it is to play the G400 max. while shorter keeps me in play.

I was just curious how the G400 with the ventus blue compares to your Maverick numbers.

I did a fitting at true spec and the numbers and feel of the ventus blue was just money. I was thinking maybe I should just get a ventus blue and keep rocking the G400 max until it explodes

Hey so I actually got it built up and ready to go and have some comparison numbers if you’re interested. So I’ve previously played the Max and loved it, and tested the G425 Max and didn’t find it any better except that it spun about 200 rpm lower with the stock Alta shaft, which was rather unusable for me. Anyways, my Mavrik with the Ventus Black launched and spun 12.5 and 2560 on average. The G400 Max with the Blue, which is a better shaft for me, launches 13.5 and spins 2500 on average, while being far more forgiving. As a side note, I played the Mavrik at 45.25” and the Max at 45”, although both at same swing weight. This was achieved with 5g hot melt on the crown of the Max, and with after market weights in the Mavrik. Both Ventus shafts are tipped 1”. I cruise at about 113, but can touch 120 SS if I need to. Hopefully this helps!

The RIPx is a goodie too. Used one in my 3 wood before switching to the Ventus and I have a habit of always going back to the original Alpha in my 3 iron. Not losing anything with that shaft! Ventus will launch higher from my experience.

Lovely bag! Would love to know the thinking behind the gap between the wedges? Instead of going with a 52 & 58 to close the gap, how come you have a 10 degree difference?

I use a 50* because my pitching wedge is a 45*, and I really don’t want to give up any distance with that club. Full 50* wedge for me is 125-130 depending how I flight it, and a full PW is 142-147 depending on flight. Honestly, I’ve used a 58* in the past, and see minimal change in full swing between that and the 60*(100-105) and I find the 60* to be more versatile around greens so I bag the 60*. Also, the heel grind on the Hi-Toe series allow an awesome variety of opening the blade to get yardages, even in the 50*. Definitely unconventional though, I agree!
