Ping-Liked the iron, disliked the durability (MERGED)

Recommended Posts

I'm interested if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I purchased a complete set of Ping G30s (5-9, PW, GW, SW, LW + 3, 4 Hybrid, Driver, 3W, 5W-5 years ago. I am writing this review here because I was unable to find another suitable place to comment in regard to Ping's reputation to stand behind its products.
I was fitted for a graphite TFC419 stiff shaft. I was entirely satisfied with the complete set until 2 years ago. After hitting a shot off the fairway the clubhead of my 8 iron completely separated from the shaft and flew into the rough. I retrieved the head and my local golf shop sent the club and shaft to Ping and they completely refurbished the club, no charge.
This summer, I hit a 9 iron that didn't feel right and I noticed that it too was about to break off at the hosel. Same thing with the 8 iron (yes again). My local golf shop again sent these back to Ping. This time I was charged a considerable, yet fair price for a new shaft.
Since receiving the 8 and 9, I have noticed cracks in the shaft of my LW and 6 iron in the same place. I have not had any problems with my hybrids or woods which have a different shaft.

I contacted Ping and the rep indicated that there was nothing he could do since the clubs were out of warranty. Sorry, but I don't accept this. I am convinced that 5 different instances represents a defect. Meanwhile I am in a quandary regarding what I should do to insure I have a reliable iron set.

5 years ago? That's a long time to warranty a shaft. IMO.

I’m not sure they should warranty the product after 5 years but offering some good will here wouldn’t hurt.  I mean, come on, something is definitely going on here.  I’ve had a set of callaway x14s since 2001 and never had a club head fly off.  If it did happen, I wouldn’t expect callaway to warranty them but after 5-7 years, heads shouldn’t be coming loose.

Dude, the G30 series was released in 2014.  It's 2021, 7 years removed from release.  Those clubs and the company owe you nothing.  Want to upgrade?  Go ahead.  Otherwise, is this a legitimate complaint?  No.

I disagree.  To have that many shafts from the same set, all purchased at the same time fail seems suspect.  Sure, they are well outside the normal warranty window, but still seems off.  I have clubs that are 20 years old and have no issues with the graphite shafts, yet this set has 4 failures.  Seems almost a batch issue.

OP, have you asked Ping or anyone else who has worked on your clubs if they have seen any of this before?  Sounds like it could be a bad batch but I would find it hard to believe that you would have the ONLY bad batch that came from Ping.  Do you have a very steep angle of attack?  Play on firm conditions?  Do you lay your bad on the ground a lot while you're playing or at the range?  I mean, not knowing anything other than what you have said, it sounds like maybe it's time to try another set, give your money to someone else.  I don't think Ping should have to lifetime warranty their products but, you can be free to speak with your wallet this time around.

IMHO too many variables to consider such as:

Is the OP the ORIGINAL owner? He does say he was fitted, but did he buy them new?

How have these clubs been stored?

Accidental damage?

Being original owner isn't something Ping cares that much about.  I sent a G400 in as the face ended up having 3 cracks in it.  Never asked for receipt or anything else, they stand behind they product.  Stored, has nothing to do with shafts cracking near the hosel.

My only guess is as I said before, batch issue on the shafts, or a heavier digger in clay soil or off mats a ton to possibly have that many failures.

Gosh Tom 48 I'm sorry you had such a poor experience with Ping.  My experience on a similar issue is so drastically different than yours that I felt like I ought to tell it.  I have custom order UST Recoil Prototype shafts on my Ping irons and I noticed that splintering near the hosel you mentioned.  Ping insisted I send the entire set back to them, and I received them back with all new shafts and grips ... no charge.  They have done this twice now, the most recent was just last year.  And mine are older than yours ... G25s.  I did go thru my local Ping account where I had purchased them and didn't speak with Ping directly ... Maybe that relationship matters?  IDK, but I thought Ping's service was far beyond what I could reasonably expect from any club company.  Again, I'm sorry your experience is such an unhappy one.  Best of luck in the future.

Jeez, just because some people haven’t had issues with their G30s doesn’t mean that there can’t be an issue with the OP’s set.  I agree that we need more information but come on people.  Let’s at least give the OP the benefit of the doubt until we find out all the facts.

Your right, it could have easily been poor quality work on Pings part. Or it’s him that’s inflicting the damage and expects Ping to cater to his needs. Lots of variables here.

I’ve played Ping irons for twenty years. I’ve broken four shafts during that time (2-iron, 5-iron, 7-iron, and pitching wedge). Each time Ping has refurbished the club head and replaced the zz65 shaft. I’ve always paid for the repair work never considering that my golf clubs were under an unlimited warranty. Perhaps that’s on me, but I am not losing sleep over the cost. Ping builds great clubs that perform.

Mats or trunk storage

If you are are a steep divot taker .. can be carnage on graphite .. especially if mats are in play off season (or in)

It it heads flying off from clue or shafts cracking inside tip of head

Graphite is really weak under compression, leaning on a club could squash the fibres which will only weaken it. Over time something will give.

Most OEM’s are fairly good at replacing stuff within the warranty period, but after a couple of years, it really comes down to the end user to pay for the repair.

There was a thread recently where someone was posting about Titleist not honoring a warranty and i think the club was only like 2-3 years old. Like it had just gone over warranty...and in that one i sided more with the OP, as many OEMs will honor that stuff

In this case i just can't really get behind you OP. As has been said this is a 7 year old set now that you have been playing for 5 years. There is going to be wear and tear on almost any kind of product you guy, golf or not. I don't know what the exact time a warranty should stop being honored is, but this feels longer than that

I have only had one ping product break ever.  That is my isi 5-wood and it didn't really even break.  The epoxy gave out.  Everything was intact and I re-epoxied it.  To ping's credit, even the head flew straight when it let go.

I would bet that the clubs in the op's post have been abused and/or not taken care of properly, either by the first user or the second.

I am much more disappointed in TM with the flaking paint on the spider x.  That flat-out bugs me.

This sounds like a problem of who you ask and how you ask... sometimes you get the wrong person and they are going to follow the book... sometimes you ask in a way that make people want to help you...

ping has a very customer first reputation, so maybe he just didn’t ask the right person for help. The reps in the field know how to get things done and can make the system work for you...

it’s a bummer of a situation, but graphite can easily crack if it isn’t treated right... seems like a bad lick situation and it’s too bad ping didn’t do more.

If I were the OP, I'd have found several helpful comments. I'd have seen some hard truth being put out there. Most of all, I'd wonder what I did to so many of these people to get the d*ckish replies. So much of social media has gone toxic. This site has seemed to avoid that, but the topic of this thread really doesn't justify the tone it has taken on.
