SIM and the V-Steel... whats the deal?

So as posted elsewhere recently did a full bag range fitting for the first time and overjoyed at results.

 

The "favorite" is a SIM 3 wood at 15*.  I noticed the other day there is a small "v-steel" printed on the sole, near the crown.  I've heard a lot about v-steel fairway woods on this forum but I've never hit them.

 

This SIM 3 wood is the easiest to elevate off the turf I've ever hit, and I played with a Tight Lies 2 for years.  Is this v-steel logo just nonsense, or is it built like an old v-steel?  What is it about it that makes it so nice/easy?  For those who have hit both, do you find them to feel similar?

 

Just curious if that is just a silly badge or if there is something in the SIM that makes it more "v-steel" like than the TM's 3 woods before it that do not have a v-steel badge.

Agreed, marketing for sure. If you look at the little metal chunk on the current soles as well, it has that same 'V' shape to it that the old Vsteels used to have, that may be part of the strategy as well. Seems like most OEMs have caught on to that shape for the back of the sole, ala the F9 driver release.

I literally tripped over my old school v steel today in the basement. Forgot i had it.  I hope the new sim has the same feel. I loved my old v steel.

The SIM fairway's are the modern v-steels.

The sole design is similar to the old V-steels, in that looking at the sole from front to back, there's a sort of elevated "V" (also a little similar to a "T"), which the original V-steels have. The SIM has the same sort of shape behind the speed slot.

Very versatile club. It's like a long-range pitching wedge. I've even used it out of fairway bunkers with good results.

I switch between the 9w and a 23* hybrid.

It's just a reference to a sole design really, one that is obviously quite popular and effective given how its popped up on other very popular clubs (SQ II, Diablo Octane).  I would disagree that it is *just* marketing as well given that it comes in the form of a heavy steel plate that lowers CG and is one of the main reasons it is so easy to launch.

+1.  Lower CG, probably helps bring it rearward (at least on drivers that's really noticable), and reduces surface area that contacts the ground.  Ease of launch, lower spin, "forgiveness" on off-center hits, reduces friction and maybe helps it get through different ground conditions (turf versatility without going to a Raylor-like V shape).  Okay, and marketing to capitalize on V Steel success 🙂
