New Garmin approach S62 update 2021??

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I was looking at buying a GPS Garmin Golf watch but didn't know when or if they were releasing a new updated Garmin s64 watch this year 2021?? Didn't want to buy the s62 and then a month later the s64 comes out. If anyone knows more please let me know it would be much appreciated, thank you!

Yeah maybe crisper screen resolution/better hole layout diagram and more accurate gps yardage readings. I heard the s62 is solid and saw some of them even have dropped in price but was just on the fence wether to pull the trigger or not if a newer better version was going to release soon and worth the wait.

I think it’s a two year cycle. The 62 just came out last year.

Yes, I have the S62, it was 2 years between that and the S60.... maybe that explains why it's not a S61...haha...

I had a S20 before the S62, while nicer, maybe i'm not much of a GPS watch guy but I didn't think it was worth the upgrade.

Ok, thank you guys all for the great feedback. Yeah I also have a cheap mileseey rangefinder at the moment but sometimes gives some weird yardage from time to time. Also maybe because here in Bangkok they also have night golf which is a great time and turn on the stadium lights on the course. But yeah I like the s62 with all its features but just didn't want to make the mistake and buy it if another model was releasing soon. Thanks guys!

Picked up an S62 a couple of weeks ago, I like it better than my laser (that I keep as a back up).  I tried searching and found no news or rumors of a new model before buying it.  So far I really like it, just took a little time to get used to playing with a watch on.  Good luck OP!

Does the watch affect your swing?

Well, if you want to be pedantic, it was 2-1/2 years.   s60 was released in May/June of 2017.  s62 was released in Jan of 2020.

I’ve owned the 62 for a while now and actually a bit disappointed. My biggest concern is that it just gives front, middle and center to green, so when I do side by side comparison to a buddy’s laser, it’s very often a bit off and sometimes as much as 7-10 yards which I can’t have.

Maybe this is with all GPS watches, but still not what I was expecting.

7-10 yards off of what? The flag? I have an S62 and don't have anything but good things to say about it (though, I replaced the band with one I liked better and it occasionally pops out... but that's a me problem). Personally, I'm trying to shift my strategy to aim for the middle of the green, so not having the exact pin coordinates is a big help...

It's a great tool, but if you want exact yardages to the pin, you need a range finder.

So I ended up pulling the trigger and buying the s62 approach. I agree that its not always the greatest in terms of GPS yardage but that was to be expected however I am really enjoying it so far. Main reason I got it was for the hole layout so I could see hazards, how far I am hitting certain clubs, score keeping/stats. I also still have my range finder which I also still use on some of my approach shots just so I can get a better more accurate read/feel for distance but I must say having both is nice to compare with. Just FYI on the watch you can move the "flag" also to get a better read for yardage. Overall I'm pretty happy with the s62 and actually has some great fitness tracking and way better battery life over the Apple Watch. Only downfall I would say would say is just the screen resolution/pixel. If your looking just for more precise distances than a better rangefinder is the way to go, but this thing packs a punch with all its features/tracking. In terms of GPS watches I think this definitely is the best option/brand to go with.

Did you consider the Fenix 6 when looking at the S62?  If so, why did you go with the S62?

I didn't really consider the Fenix 6 because its more expensive, doesn't do any other features better golf wise, same screen resolution, a bit bulkier and not as clean/sleek looking as the s62, and I don't need the other tracking like exhibition mode or solar power.

Also, didn't want to pay too much for this one as the next gen/update S64 approach will probably release next year sometime from what I've heard.

Thanks for the reply.  I am torn between the two, but was leaning towards the Fenix due to its use for fitness tracking and skiing in addition to golf.

Yeah I think it all depends on what your needs or what your looking for specifically out of your smart/garmin watch. I was looking specifically for a golf watch so this s62 was perfect. It has a ton of fitness tracking that I think fit most people but yeah no skiing. I think the s62 is lighter and less bulky than the Fenix also as they know you're going to have to wear it while swinging your club and tailored it more specifically for golfers.

I upgraded to the S62 from the Fenix 5X and am very happy. The S62 has better golf functionality, mainly the touch screen that lets you measure distance to hazards or layup spots very easily. It’s also lighter on the wrist. The trade off is the S62 doesn’t have as many fitness and measurement functions (no altitude for example), but it does enough fitness for me and the golf functions more than make up for it.

Still have nothing but good things to say about the S62.

I wish for the next version *some* OEM would incorporate actual satellite photos of the holes like the UProMX did. To this day I still think that was the single best GPS unit ever released. Mine actually will still fire up today.

Does not affect my swing but I normally don't play with a watch (I'm a creature of habit).  Took it to the range and forgot it was there after a few swings.  Also, took a few holes to get "used to" interacting with the watch while I play.  Becomes very familiar and you don't think about it after a couple of holes.

I also keep my laser in the bag to do occasional comparisons (slope differences, exact pin location, etc).

I went with the Fenix 6 because I like to snowboard almost as much as I like to hit driver.
