$500 to blow. What would you do?

Recommended Posts

A business associate gave me a $500 gift card for Dicks Sporting/Golf Galaxy.

While much appreciated, it's honestly something I don't need. I'm pretty much set for clubs, bag, balls, clothes, all the "gear".

Not a Scotty fan ::gasp:: So I was thinking of a Bettinardi putter, even though my 25 year old Anser is money. But I know after 3 or 4 rounds the Ping would be back in the bag.

Another option would be to take my 2 adult kids there and tell them they each have $250.

Last year, similar gift, I just went there and literally wasted the money on wedges, balls, shoes, etc.

There is a First Tee program I've gifted equipment to, but the skeptic in me says if I give the manager a gift card he'll be the one with the new putter...

To top it off, I play a few charity rounds each year with the card giver and I know he'll ask "sooo, whadja get?"

I realize this is the epitome of a first world problem....but back to the original question: "What would you do"?

Why couldn't it be an Amazon card?!?

One box of ProV1's should take care of it, you might have some change left.

How about:

Reshaft your irons with graphite.  Or just get a SIM 2 driver and have trade in capital if you don’t like it.

You have to see the card giver again, so it's probably worth it to buy something for yourself... You have adult kids who play golf, and want to give back to the First Tee program... Honestly, I think a little bit of ingenuity and some splitting of the baby and you can knock out all these goals...

First Tee: Buy a cheap kids set and donate it... does something good for them, you know they will use it... and hopefully helps a kid out. US Kids Set is $160... $340 left to spend.

Kids: Dozen golf balls each. Who doesn't like free golf balls? I'm going with Bridgestone because that's what I like (don't like your kids? Send me 2 dozen) $45 each... $250 left to spend.

$250 left for you, you've done something nice for the kids AND your kids... New golf bag, training aid, golf balls (5 dozen!) or a new putter... I'm personally a big fan of SeeMore putters now, and think the RST is a fairly unique feature that works as a training aid even if it doesn't make it in your bag... You can pick one up for $200. Maybe it makes your bag (making your donor happy), maybe it's just in your office to practice with... The remaining $50 can cover taxes or some more balls...

Who spends money on underwear? 😉

Lots of good answers.  I see the dilemma because, yes, the donor will want to know what you did with it so you'll have to be the judge of how whatever you report will be received (and you want to keep this going!).

General fitness stuff, some new athletic shoes, etc. can be found there, also - got to be in shape (allegedly) to play golf,  but I'd say something significant golfwise so you can say, "I bought a bunch of cool stuff and. . . . this!" (whatever it is).

Maybe even a little gift back to him!

Even though I think a Scotty if overrated and over priced, buy yourself a Scotty and give the rest to your kids to spend. This way you could answer BA legitimately and still give some to your kids. You could buy a used Scotty for around $300 (I guess), and give $200 to your kids. I don't think this is being selfish, after all, it's what you BA wanted you to do, and it was his money he gave you.

  • 3 weeks later...

So thanks to the ideas presented here.......here's what I did....

Took the $500, got 4-$100 cards and 4-$25 cards.

Gave the $25 cards to the high school golf coach, he said he would use them as incentives somehow, 2 for the boys team and two for the girls team.

Gave (or will give when I catch them open) $100 card to the local First Tee program.

Gave $100 to each of my two kids.

Have one remaining card in my wallet...

I've been to Dicks twice and Golf Galaxy twice and still don't need anything... I almost bought a Bertinardi, but I had just re-gripped my Ping...
