Is there a forgiving strong 3 wood off the tee?

slantsflood

Recommended Posts

Forgive my lack of knowledge with newer tech.  I've always played drivers at 400cc or under or strong 13° 3 woods.  Since they don't make mini drivers anymore, are there any strong 3 woods that are considered "forgiving".  Not looking for more distance, just looking for help with consistency.

Thank you.

I have a 13.5 mavrik max with fujikura fuel and it’s easily the most forgiving and straightest 3 wood I have ever hit. Very long as well

I also have a sim max 15 with a fubuki k and have hit them side by side and the max for me was easier to hit and 5 yards longer

@slantsflood: Mini driver=still available!

My home-made alternative= a Callaway 13.5* driver (with adjustable loft +2/-1* )... or a Cobra Ladies driver (can go up to 14*).

I find 3 woods somewhat difficult to hit off the tee as well.. but i can nail it off the deck. Im kinda 50 50 from the tee with it.. can ve good or real bad. I tend to stay away and just use driver or if im trying to put it in play the 3 hybrid... 3 wood mainly off the deck on pars 5s. Its only used maybe 2 3 times a round its crazy.

Original Ping Rapture 3 wood (14 deg) can be had for ~$60 on EBay if you are patient.  Absolutely awesome alternate tee club.  Some look pretty closed at address so make sure you see it from the address position.

Well yes there is as I own a Ryoma F2 13* F2 3w best 3w I've ever own. Very forgiving and just as long as a lot of drivers out there off the Tee.

As noted above, the Original One is a good option as is a used Bertha Mini from a few seasons ago. I picked up a Bertha Mini from another member on the BST towards the end of last season and quite enjoyed it off the tee. Gave me around 10-12 yards more than my GBB 3 wood and was very easy to fit once I figured out the correct tee height.

All of these are nice options with lower loft and good forgiveness:

Ping G410/G425 14.5 (175 cc head)

Titleist TS2/TSi2 13.5 (175 cc head)
Cobra Big Tour 13.5 (173 cc head)

Mavrik Max 13.5 (200 cc head)

TaylorMade Original One 13.5 (275 cc head) (Mini-Driver)

I have had a 16* SLDR Mini Driver in my bag for the past 6 years and it is fantastic as a tee club.  I spent a good part of last summer trying to replace this with something that is equally forgiving and has some modern tech.  I hit A LOT of 3 woods and I found the Ping 410 to be the most forgiving but I was looking for a deeper face as it is primarily a tee only club - settled on the Mizuno 190 ST.  Worth a look.

I tested the SIM TI lofted down with a Ventus red shaft and had plenty of forgiveness even for a hacker like myself.

Cobra also still has their Speedzone big tour fairway at 14.5 that can go down to 13. At 173 CC, it’s a little bigger for forgiveness and would be a good secondary option off the tee.

Callaway X2 Hot 2 deep or 3 deep, some days it’s longer than a driver for my swing

2deep probably more forgiving since its larger volume than 3deep with a hopefully larger face.

I find the 3deep to not be that forgiving (face is small to me).

I find that the Tour Edge Exotics woods in the 2013-2015 era (TEE XCG7 Beta and TEE EX9 Long 13* which are 185 cc).

Spec sheet for XCG7 Beta (2013 model year) taller faced model

https://www.touredge.com/exoticsxcg7betafairway

Spec sheet for XCG7 (non-beta) with shallower face

https://www.touredge.com/exoticsxcg7fairway

Spec sheet for EX9 Long (same 185 cc head with Titanium face) but with adjustable hosel.

https://www.touredge.com/ex9longfairway

Spec sheet for EX10 Beta (180 cc head with Titanium face) - glued hosel

https://www.touredge.com/copy-of-exotics-ex10-fairway

Then there's the CBX (link is for CBX even though it says otherwise)

https://www.touredge.com/copy-of-hl2-fairway

Are you misses high/low (skying ball with a shallow faced 3 wood, which could be helped with a deeper faced wood), or toe/heel?

I think the newer TEE EXS and EXS220 would also be nice forgiving wood options.

If you want to go full bore on more forgiving strong 3 woods, you could look at Wishon designs

Wishon 919THI (full sized 460cc driver that you could get at a 13-15* loft (glued hosel, but you can have head loft / face angle hand selected).

https://wishongolf.com/designs/designs-drivers/919thi/

Wishon 919 F/D is a 14* option with a head volume of 260cc.

Cobra Big Tour 3 is very easy to hit & forgiving. Also since you mentioned small headed drivers...if you can find one the Cobra Long Tom 2 wood circa 2012 was awesome. 12.5 degrees & 240 cc head.

Taylormade came out with a new adjustable mini driver in 2019. 11.5 & 13.5 degrees options.

I am 71 years old.  I started playing a 41-3/4 inch 15 degree loft Wishon "fairway-driver" a few months ago.  And it IS a fairway finder off the tee.  LOVE this club.  I have been surprised that I hit it off the tee within about 20 to 30 yards of best distances I get with my driver.  Shorter and heavier a good option to consider.

@JFM628 did you find the Mizuno ST190 (3 wood??)= gets you longer drives,

vs your SLDR mini-driver? As presumably the mini-driver has a slightly-longer shaft, vs a 3-wood?

Drives very similar off the tee...no noticeable distance issue.  Biggest issue was adjusting to the smaller head but the deep face has helped.  ST190 a very nice head - great solution if you can find the right shaft for you.

I second this. I game the SIM Ti 3W. Hzrdus Smoke Yellow shaft. It’s my favorite club in my bag. Can’t miss a fairway with it and it’s also very easy to launch off the deck. Ball comes off like a missile. Even the sound is awesome. You can hear the ball whistling off the face
