Turning hips (really pulling rear hip backwards)....

After feedback here and watching the no-turn cast video, I picked up a few more thoughts about my swing.  Although Monte's thoughts were probably overly complex for my swing at this point and the cast part simply didn't make sense, I was able to gain insight on the turn and load portion, which is where I struggle. I tend to drive backwards and slide, forcing me to make an aggressive move back to neutral. After watching his video and playing around, I realized that whenever I hit a really good shot, I feel like I am turning around the center of my hips and almost loading my right inside heel on the backswing. From there, it is just a release from that coil. The last couple of rounds I played, doing this with my driver was basically a guaranteed fairway at 280-320 yards. It is almost a pull from the rear hip, just like it is a pull from the front hip on the downswing (that great hips video that someone posted recently-the Mark guy had posted it-great stuff).

In this video, the turn is pretty nuanced (8-iron for my normal high 160's distance) and I don't have the elbow-in drop down movement that flattens the club and may be necessary for my swing, but even so, getting that turn in has really reduced inconsistency for me so that even the "too steep" swings are resulting in decent results.

Out of this video, what can I work on?  Flattening the backswing is one thing for sure and getting a bit more turn.  I like my tempo a lot better here: tempo and a load at the top is the biggest key to my swing.  I am athletic enough to get out of a bad position if I can use momentum at the top of the swing; it is much easier to simply load correctly, but without the top of the swing gather, I really struggle.  I would like to have a more open hip at impact but even a few degrees is a big improvement considering how tight I am through the core.

Your swing appears very similar to mine. It appears to me that your weight at address and throughout the swing is too much on your toes, causing you to be too on top of the ball, which makes it hard to come into impact shallow. I'm currently trying to fix the same thing and I have to feel like im sitting in a chair with my weight on my heels.

I'm amazed that you thought NTC was overly complex. I'm not sure how you can make changes less technical than "move your wrists like this and turn".

It was the wrist action part; here I am swinging naturally and my wrists are moving out of radial deviation on their own. I tried some swings with a manual "cast" and the results certainly weren't pretty (nor did the wrist enjoy the impact).

Turn drill was good: I was able to get more of a "feel" for the rotation, even if my sequence is different. As long as I can eventually get to the top loaded properly, I will be happy.

Thanks! I will think about that today.

You will need to move that right hip much further back and keep it there longer. You actually move your pelvis forward during the back swing and then further forward during the down swing (early extension). If you can hit driver consistently a straight 280 yards from what you do now then you might not want to change it. 🙂

Ah, so I have felt that: my best swings are when I keep that pelvis back. I have been working on that as a swing thought so that I don't have to overcorrect.

As others have said.......significantly more hip turn (right hip back) in the backswing and keep it there a lot longer.  You need to exaggerate both to an extreme for a time.

At shaft parallel early in the backswing you're good, then your right hip starts to move the other way and at the top, you’re out of position.

Ballpark hip turn.   Not only is your pelvis turn restricted so is your torso and therefore your arms giving you too little time and space to shallow and rotate in synch.

Thanks.  I have felt that on good swings when I hold that hip back longer and delay the release.
