Adams Tech in TaylorMade SIM (and most others)

Imitation is said to be the most sincere form of flattery...

I still play the Adams 9015D--and have yet to find a "modern" driver that out performs it whether on a simulator or on the course.   That said, I find myself looking at the SIM drivers (both the new one pictured here and the originals) and cannot help but see similarities in design to my old standby, the 9015D:  There's the deep face, the pear shape, the weighting pushed way to the back of the head.  I believe the speed slot in the sole was also an Adams first, which has since been adopted by TaylorMade and others.

I also see the above in virtually all the other modern drivers and can't help but think that Barney and Co. were really on to something when they designed the 9015D...but they couldn't fully capitalize on it.

We'll see if a 2021 driver can displace my 9015D...but I'd be surprised if the numbers and performance are significant enough to push my Adams out of the bag.

Not sure you can say they invented the deep face, pear shaped driver.  And perimeter weighting has been around for a while, everyone just had their own form of it initially.  Weight down the middle isn't that big as thing as where are you going to put it unless the driver is going to be draw/fade biased.  Then again, I don't give barney credit for much.

Agree with pretty much everything you say but should add that pre TM Adams were the first to market(at least in post year 2000) with the sole slot. There may have been others doing the spring face idea through different methods but I just don't remember what they may have been.

Has Cally or Cobra done a slot?  TEE fairways have already been regarded as among the longest out there without it.  So while TM and Titleist have, others are making quality products without it.

Much much like Cally picking up Topflight more for the ball patents, tho not mentioned much anymore.

I was referring to ways to make a spring face wood head.

I know, but more from just the obvious of putting a channel/slot in.  Faces getting thinner and thinner would be the easiest go to as long as they can make it strong enough to handle the abuse.

While Adams did it with Ti heads, I think that it has been a boon for TM in that they can make a fast face, but not use the more expensive material, while still charging like it is.

Taylor made should now own all the adams patents... they definitely built drivers that perform, i still have my fast 12 ls in the house.

I think they had a unique advantage of being small and with a smart, passionate leader in Barney. They took risks and made some great equipment. I’m still playing cmbs.

that said, lots of golf stuff overlaps... if it works, others will find a way to incorporate it.

Slots are theoretically there to produce more speeds from the bottom of the face.

Just about every manufacturer has had significant contributions to golf clubs. Callaway with one of the first metal woods, big bertha, and the beginning of pushing cc size. Ping with moi ideas. Titleist and taylormade usually get credit for the adjustable hosel. Taylormade with moveable weights. Just to name a few. And then they all copy each other, its good for us to be honest.

9015D definately a milestone driver for sure and love that low spinning head with Ozik shaft.

I love the low spinning head but have to be a forgiving head. My search continues.

wow, i just wrote a topic about this

i mentioned about the face, just today i was looking at the face and i notice there is something similar to twist face in a way the toe was very open, yet the lower heel is not as stretch back as much, even seems like it was kinda flat

i know this one of their marketing material for the adams DHY

Essentially all woods have bulge and roll incorporated in their designs.  The bulge and roll on the dHy hybrid (and Controller), were unusual because "irons" don't usually have bulge and roll (and really don't need them because the COG is so close to the face).  Twist face is a modification to the normally symmetrical bulge and roll shape to help correct "typical" misses.  I would be really surprised (and impressed) if Adams was actually using the twist face concept in the 9015D.

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
