Hey doc, you think it’s possible that Tiger has an extra vertebrae?

You must be confusing him with Natalie Gulbis.  Likely the ankles threw you off.

Friend of a friend had his appendix "accidentally" removed.  Come to find out he had been on the SLIMFAST powder diet and had developed a blockage unrelated to the appendix.  He wasn't getting enough water.  Three weeks after recovering "they" told him, the appendix was for lack of better term, "defective" and that he didn't need an appendix to live.

My answer to that - the appendix is in there for a reason.

How can something"non-essential" be "defective?"

I had my appendix removed in 5th grade (I'm now 36), and the way the doctor explained the appendix is that it really doesn't do much.  Even information online says that there is no real clear use of an appendix.  Mine got inflamed for some reason and it was removed.  It's supposed to be the size of a pinky, but it enlarged to the size of an adult male's hand.  I went home the day after the surgery.  The roommate I had in the hospital was not so lucky.  His appendix ruptured, and they had to leave him open and clean it every few hours.

Got mine chopped out when I was 19.  Having appendicitis was one of the more agonizing experiences of my life.  I don't miss that 24 hours.  However the lanthroscopic surgery seemed to be a sinch, I went home the next day.

I don’t know how Tiger will recover from this latest surgery, and unlike others I’m not going to speculate.

What I do know is he is 45 years old with a back that is much less than ideal for a golfer.

With that in mind I’ll enjoy every opportunity to see him play in the future. Never know when it will be the last.

It was pretty painful from what I remember.  Mine took a couple of days to figure out what was going on.  I still have a 2-3" scar on the right side of my stomach, and an even smaller one just below my belly button.

Random story from recovery.  I was watching "Family Matters", and it was the episode where they had the Bruce Lee karate type scene.  I was laughing so hard at the scene, and was crying from the pain because those abdominal muscles weren't fully recovered yet from being cut for the surgery, lol.

On a side note, I hope Tiger is able to play and win some more.  I really love watching him play golf.  I didn't get to watch him win as many tournaments in the early 2000s because I was in school and always busy.  I'm hoping he's healthy enough for me to appreciate his greatness for a few more years.

Question about the removed appendix:

To help me and our fellow WRXers, can you please use this chart to better define an "adult male's hand" size?

So looking at that chart, I would fall under the XL category in terms of size (insert whatever joke you want here).  I met the surgeon before going in, and he was a very large man.  I'm 5'10" and 195ish lbs.  My dad is about the same size, and I remember the surgeon being much bigger than my dad.

My guess is that the surgeon would be closer to the 3XL in size than the 2XL.  From what I was told, my appendix was as big as the surgeon's hand when it was removed.

So it was ready to burst.  Could have been a scary thing.

No idea what it does but when it goes bad look out! So this is a cautionary tale ----- I was having pain I thought was from bad diet for some time, finally asked doc, he probed the right side of my abdomen, based on location of pain ordered a colonoscopy, it came back normal (okay they pulled my head out), pain settled down, several weeks later it was back and worse, so CT scan scheduled, showed up for that with a high fever, after I left the tech touched base with a doctor immediately and apparently told him the scan didn't need to be sent out that he thought I had a ruptured appendix.  A short time later it was out!  Mine was inverted from birth so instead of hanging, it was sort of sticking up, so the area of pain for an appendix issue wasn't really where it would be expected to be, my doc felt pretty badly about it but never heard that one before the surgeon told him about it post-surgery.  Apparently I had a slow leak that would rupture, seal up, rupture, seal up, etc. My youngest daughter was upset I passed on bringing it home in the jar he showed it to me in!

So . . .  don't be afraid to suggest to your doctor the notion it might be your appendix vs. a blockage just in case!

Holy crap.  That sounds scary.  My situation was scary looking back on it, but I was young, so I had no idea what was going on.  I just knew I was in pain for a few days off and on.

@FergusonLooking back, it was probably close to rupturing.  Thinking about my roommate at the time in the hospital, and his screams in the middle of the night, I was very lucky.

We need to debate the "purpose" of the appendix.

Appendix may have important function, new research suggests

January 9, 2017

Midwestern University

The human appendix, a narrow pouch that projects off the cecum in the digestive system, has a notorious reputation for its tendency to become inflamed (appendicitis), often resulting in surgical removal. Although it is widely viewed as a vestigial organ with little known function, recent research suggests that the appendix may serve an important purpose. In particular, it may serve as a reservoir for beneficial gut bacteria.

Actually it wasn't, what follows is what happened in the "short time later".  When the doctor called my office he left a message, lol, to call him back that's all it was.  I was on the phone, did some things, was headed out with something that needed to go FedEx and our receptionist said "Dr. ___ called wants you to call back".  Whatever. Off I went, while I was paying for the overnight parcel my cell phone rang - the head of the nursing staff who had my cell for business reasons and I knew fairly well was on the line and I answered and then, "_______, there's a surgeon waiting here to take out your appendix, get your a___ over here now!"  Called my wife to meet me there and off I went, and they had me doped up in a flash.  Only negative was it took another 36 hours for my fever to break so I was in two nights but went in on Friday so I enjoyed an Iowa football victory over Michigan on Saturday and too many visitors. My wife still claims I may have said something inappropriate directed at a mutual friend who works at the hospital I allegedly spotted down a hallway -- she recently had some "enhancements" -- from flat on my back and out of it while being wheeled to surgery, and that I was supposedly lucky she didn't hear me. I claim BS (but the person in question still has every reason to be very proud, lol).

I had this exact same back surgery when I was 40. Recovery was simple and I've never had another problem with that area. That was over 25 years ago, and I suspect the procedure has advanced quite a bit in those years. I'm not saying he will recover fully, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him come back from this.

I think Tiger can still win if he man's up and hires a swing coach for people with bad backs and who are crippled.  Tiger could try to change his game to play more like Francesco Molinari and Corey Pavin.  Phil can still work on hitting bombs but Tiger can still win using course management and I less stressful swing.

Here he is hitting a punch 7 iron.  How far? 180?  Not that stressful on the back.

And he can also hit two iron stingers using a half to three quarters swing like this.  How far did that one go?  He goes all in here and is at 260 yards?   Use a 3/4's swing and he still get 230 yards.   Low stress on the back.

The problem is some people here are high handicappers and the other problem is Tiger needs to play more like Pavin, Molinari and Bernhard Langer.

I don’t know about that.  3/4 yes. But holding onto the release to hit it that low isn’t exactly stress free on the back. It’s a pretty tense movement.  This will sound absolutely nuts , but watch his butt.  Lol. He’s clinched so tight he can crack a walnut.  That translates to your entire body.
