Is there a way to tell if a iron shaft has been soft stepped?

Recommended Posts

For the last couple of months. I have been playing Mitsubishi MMT 90 stiff in my apex 19 pro. I purchased it used off of eBay. The seller stated that the shafts was purchased brand new and had a reputable shop install the shafts. And also pull the shafts. He stated in the auction that it didn’t work out for him. Said that the shaft was to stiff for his liking. He stated the shaft set consisted of 5-AW. So that’s what I used it for in my set of apex 19. When I got the shafts. I had my local shop do the install. So here is where I started having second thoughts.

I went out to go play a round of 18 hole on Sunday with a friend that also has Mitsubishi MMT 90 stiff in his T300. He custom ordered the shafts brand new through GolfWorks. One swing with his T300 8 iron. I can tell there was a difference between my shaft and his shaft. This may sound weird for you guys. But, my MMT 90 stiff felt whippy compared to my friends MMT 90 stiff. My friends shaft feels stiffer. My friend gives my 8 iron a swing. And he immediately can feel the difference in shafts even though they are the same. So after my round. I contacted the guy through eBay. And asked him if he soft stepped the shafts in his irons. To me that’s the only explanation is to why it felt whippy.  I haven’t gotten a response back. How can I tell if the shafts I bought used are soft stepped?

Most Mitsubishi shafts have a shaft label on the butt end.  If you take off one grip, you might find a label still attached.  I'm no expert, but I doubt there would be that much difference in feel unl

Different BBGM and/or different head weights can cause the shafts to play differently - softer or firmer.   Can't speak tot he apex 19's but the last set of Callaway irons I built had about

Soft stepping a shaft won't make it feel whippy. The difference in feel could be the difference in heads.    Check the shaft labels...only way.

Can't speak tot he apex 19's but the last set of Callaway irons I built had about a 1/2" shorter BBGM than what might be considered standard.  And 1/2" is roughly equivalent to a soft step.

But to answer the question, the primary way is to check the shaft labels under the grip (if they are still there and intact).   IF you know the bore depth, with some shafts you can use a tip to graphic measurement.

Try measuring from insertion point of the iron heads to where graphics start to appear on the shaft on your irons vs your friend's. Also, aren't the Callaway's taper tip and the Titleist parallel?

Apex 19 pro model is .355. Standard apex 19 is .370. I have the apex 19 pro model. Titleist T300 is tapered like the apex pro.

According to Maltby, the T300 heads weigh 1.5 grams more at the 6-iron. So the T300 head should also weigh more at the 8-iron. And as others have already said, a heavier iron head will make the shaft play and feel softer.

Just realize:

1) it takes a full 7 gm difference in head weight to be the equivalent of a soft step.

2) the 1.5 gm is well within normal manufacturing tolerances so may not be indicative of any particular pattern between the two models.   Get two more random samples and the difference could easily flip the other way.
