Golf Weekly Routine?

Recommended Posts

When I was a marathoner, among the guys in my running group, there was a pretty standard weekly schedule: MWFSa were easy runs.  TThSu were "quality" days--either the long run, or fast runs.  And we held to that schedule week in, week out.

I'm curious what sorts of weekly routines golfers keep.  I've been trying to do the following:

T: short game

Th: full swing
Sa: short game

Su: play a round

How do you all structure your weeks?

Saturday’s I wake up, usually hung over, drive to the course and if there’s time I’ll hit a few balls before heading to the first tee. If no time, I head to the tee and stretch while I wait for the group ahead to clear before trying my best to throw my shoulders out of socket and wreck my back again.

Schedule varies based on time of year and most importantly, how late the sun is shinning.  But for reference I usually tried to putt at the course one week day night, along with most nights in my basement.  Hit balls in the garage Thursday night and maybe a little on Friday (but not much, don't want to be worn out), I'd then play 27 or 36 saturday and 18 or 27 sunday.

I envy you golfing 6 days a week!   Do you give any structure to those days, or just fly by the seat of your pants?

Depends on the day of the week and time of year.  Weekdays can be a bit tough due to work and available light, but weekends are usually an early morning match, with quick warm up before. possibly an emergency 9 or more after.  I'm not a range rat and find range time counter productive if its more than a quick warm up moving from half wedges, full wedges, couple 8 irons, couple 6 irons, and maybe 3 drivers.  Few puts and off to the first tee.

The difficulty with having as rigid a routine as runners are able to keep is day light dependent.

At the moment where I am, we have about 6-7 hours when it is actually light enough to golf and those hours during the week I am in the office. So at this time of year and over the past few months my routine has looked like this:-

Monday - Heavy Leg Day

Tuesday - Putting Practice (Indoors)

Wednesday - Cycling (Indoors) or some HIIT body weight stuff (depending on how my legs are feeling from Monday!).

Thursday - Upper Body and mobility/stretching

Friday - Work on my basics - takeaway and balance are the two things that can slip so I try to concentrate on them.

Saturday - Range or Course depending on weather.

Sunday - Range or Course depending on weather.

In the Spring and Summer:-

Monday - Leg Day (how hard I go at it will depend on what games I have lined up during the week).

Tuesday - Range

Wednesday - Usually 18 holes after work

Thursday - Short Game - pitching, chipping and putting.

Friday - 18 holes after work

Saturday & Sunday - Usually some kind of competition on either day and practice the other on the course.

I am aware that some of that is perhaps not strictly golf but I find that my motivation to do some of the non-golf things is helped if I think about the benefit that it will have on my golf.

Good point about the light.  Same thing here too -- dark when I go to work, dark when I get off.  Summer is much more conducive for long hours of practice.

Just try to balance practice and get better when I can—usually a couple of days per week on the simulator and putting on indoor mat and a round of golf on the weekend—full time job and toddler at home mad it difficult to have set schedule. I’ve accepted I may never break 80 lol

You know, that's why I asked the question -- trying to see routines for how people integrate golf into a busy schedule.  I also got a toddler, and, man, it's hard getting away for an hour to practice.  Feels self indulgent.   I, too, may never break 80!!

My former toddler is 13 now, and just got his first adult set of clubs for Christmas.

So the goal is to start using him as an excuse to go to the range or play a quick 9 on the weekends. It's less self-indulgent lol.

Winter

Tuesdays and Thursdays I got to the range for my full swing practice.

Wednesdays I go to the range with my daughter for her range time.

Sat and Sun are golfing days.

Summer

I play most evenings, either 9 or 18 holes and usually both weekend days providing nothing else is happening.
