Traditional lofted irons - how many Wrx gearheads still playing ?

If you play anything new, I think it would be hard to find traditional lofts...and as this is GolfWRX, most people play something new. 🙂

I played the i3+ irons for 10 years. Never should have gotten rid of those. 

I'm not sure what traditional lofted clubs are. My first set of real clubs, that my Dad bought me back in the 80's were Hogan Apex irons and the "equilizer" or pw was 50* or 52*

Seems like lofts have gotten stronger ever since. I think the pw in my current is 45* and the u wedge is 50*

MP 4’s bent a degree week playing off a 47* PW gives me the yardages I know each club should be going.

This thread is funny but as others have pointed out man has “traditional” changed over the years. When I think about as recent as the late 90s most tour pros (and us regular consumers) had a PW (48 or 49 degrees) directly into a SW (56) and maybe a lob wedge (60). But that just means you needed more irons at the top- a 3i or 4i. 
 

Not that if matters and golf will continue to evolve but I really like what I suppose I’d call “modern traditional” lofts with a 46 degree wedge (I have a 47 degree PW bent one strong). For someone at my speed that makes the PW a 120ish club and my 7i a 160ish club. To each his own but this suits me fine. Yes I wish I had the talent of a tour pro to hit a “modern traditional” 7i 200 yards if I wanted to but I’m not after a 28 degree “7i” to make that more feasible. 
 

When I look at the super string iron sets the wedges confuse me. PW, AW, GW... I don’t remember what each is so that is confusing for me. My sons 718 AP1s have an “A wedge” that is 48 degrees so essentially a PW.

I haven't played traditional lofts since 1997 ish.  I had a set of irons re-shafted, and the guy screwed up pre-cutting the butt ends, and because they were the Maxfl (VHL) and had variable hosel lengths I ended up playing roughly 1/4 gaps trough most of the set, and had to bend to get yardage gaps corrected.  I have played similar length since and also as such, have to bend my lofts to get gaps.  Sure my PW currently is 46*, but my 4 iron is 21* most of the time instead of a 3 iron being 21*

I'm interested in getting some modern irons with lofts that are jacked one club stronger but still end up with a 46° PW. The MP20 MMC or ZX7 achieve this.

6 31°/ 7 31°

9 43°/ PW 46°

PW 47°

 

Hmm ... so either I fork out $$$ for new clubs or I just toss out my 8 iron and bend my 9 iron 2° strong. 🤔

 

Voila! I have modern 'distance' irons. 

 

Can't wait to see how much further I hit them.
