Ghosters

So I'm not sure what to really call these people, I call them ghosters, but I have been through numerous listings where I get an inquiry about an item and some small talk and the buyer then says they want it and they are ready to buy and ask for a paypal address.  So I give it to them and then they disappear.  No further responses, no payment,  DMs are not responded to.  So they get my PayPal info and they are gone.  This happens at least once every time I do an ad.  So who are these ghosters and what are they doing with my PayPal email address?

Threads like this pop up once every 6 months... nothing you can do but move on. 
 

And they’re more than likely not doing anything with your PayPal address.

Just add them to your ignore list.  Then you don't have to bother with them anymore.

Been around for a while.  like said above, a thread comes up a few times a year about tire-kickers.  Its also one of the main reasons why people will not hold items they are selling.  The first to pay, gets it.  Best thing to do is move on from it.

Frustrating but part of the BST. That’s why there’s a block/ignore list.

Its beyond annoying.  Really not hard to let someone know you changed your mind, received a better deal or whatever excuse they have. 

 

I usually follow up once and if they "read" my message and don't respond, I delete the conversation and ignore/block.

Not much you can do other than block/ignore as others have said, but you bring up a valid point that I have thought about with the PP address situation. What are they gaining, or what are they trying to gain, by getting it.

Yeah, I got into a dispute with another member about 2 years ago where he wanted some Vokeys I had. Asked for PayPal and we committed to a price and nothing for about 16 hours. I sold them the next morning to another member for my asking price so I did profit a bit more but then he came back and left negative feedback and put up a thread on DOND calling me out. Luckily I just posted my DMs and the Marshalls removed the negative feedback but my stance still is that if you make a deal and ask for PayPal, pay immediately or at least let me know. If I get a bird in hand, I'm going with that. These ghosts are a problem and it happens all to often.

I think the issue is that there’s no ramifications for doing it. There should be an option in Feedback to address it.

I like that option!

 

I wonder if marketing companies are mining email addresses for golfers?  Or are they selling known PayPal addresses on the dark web to hack into or something....

 

Thanks for the comments.  It's usually new members with little or no feedback.  But it's hard to not be nice and give out your PayPal when you think they are serious...

I don't read much into ghosting. Sometimes people get cold feet when they login to their PayPal and have to take the cash out. Not too much unlike when you pull something off the shelf at the store, walk around with it a bit, but just don't take it to the register.

 

Of course it's a pain in the rear for sellers, but blocking seems extreme. Maybe that person actually buys a lot of stuff and will come back your way later.

My Favorites are from the WTB forum. PM them with item they're looking for and they respond with " still trying to decide" , and poof, last contact...

Twice I have had exactly what was asked for in a WTB. I mean exactly-club model, loft, shaft, shaft flex, length. Exactly what was asked for. The response. Nada. Nil. Zilch. I get not responding to offers of things you didn't ask for but the offering the exact item at least deserves a thanks but no thanks.

I stopped reading the WRB forum several years ago - it’s a total waste of time. You can have EXACTLY what the poster is looking for, and they don’t even reply to your PM.

Yep.  I don’t get why, if someone is online asking for PayPal info and saying they’ll buy it, they wouldn’t just immediately pay if they actually want it.  Waiting almost an entire day to pay with no follow up communication and then getting upset because it was sold is the ultimate in entitlement.

To be fair I think that happens in all aspects of life...selling, business, dating.

 

I know I've been on job interviews where they literally told me that my resume matches "exactly" what they are looking for (in the pre-lim, not the main interview); never heard back.
