Best Feeling and Forgiving Player’s Irons?

bigskybirdie

Recommended Posts

I’m a 6 hdcp and ball striking is my strength. My current set for the last 10 years is the TM Tour Preferred MC’s that I love and like just like Daniel Berger, I have struggled to kick them out of the bag.

I prefer a thin top line and compact look at address but still want technology to bail me out on the occasional miss so not really thinking blades. I also need the buttery smooth feeling of a forged head and I am definitely not a fan of the “click” feel from the player’s distance category. I don’t care about price so what should be on my list? So far I’ve been geeking out over TM 7MC, Titleist T100’s, Callaway Apex Pro or CB forged and Mizuno MP 20 MCC... Would love any additional feedback for best feel and forgiveness combination you have played with.

Thanks for your feedback!

I’m a 5 and love the Apex Pros (2019). If i had to buy another set right now I’d look at the Srixon 785. They both offer a lot of what you want.

Callaway Triple Diamond LS 9* | Diamana D Limited 60tx

Titleist TSi3 15* | Ventus TR 7x

Titleist TSi3 18* | Ventus TR 8x
Srixon ZX7 4-p | DG x100

Very cool, didn’t know Berger or any other Tour guys still gamed the Tour Preferred! I just picked up a combo set of 2014 Tour Preferred MC/MB late in the Fall and unfortunately only used them a handful of times before the snow fell. Looking forward to giving them a full season in 2021 and if they’re a fit I’ll have no problem using them at least another year+ after that. If not, I’ll pick up some different irons at demo day sales or used next Winter and would probably target TM P770’s, Srixon ZX7’s, or Mizuno JPX 919’s from everything I’ve heard about them...

Callaway Paradym X (15*) / Hzrdus Silver 6.0

Callaway Big Bertha 23 (19*) / Cally RCH 65 S

I’d be testing Srixon ZX7, Wilson CB’s and either the t100’s or t100S from Titleist.

Worthy mention to the MMC’s and 921 Forged from Mizuno as well

I second the Mizuno MMC; great feel and consistency. They do hold their distance and direction on moderate mishits. They aren't Callaway Apexes, but if your missing the center (quarter instead of dime-size wear) then these will keep your ball speed up. I also love the spin, even on low or partial shots; I didn't realize until playing these, how lower spinning irons hurt my game.

Can't go wrong w MMC. From your wish list, they check all the boxes.

I'd stay away from the JPX line. I went that route once and struggled coming from MPs. To each their own, but if you want buttery feel, thin top line and some easy to hit player irons, the MMCs are hard to beat.

I haven't tried many of the others because once I hit the the MMCs I was sold.

I'm still playing Cobra Forged Tours and love them.  I haven't hit the King Tours yet, but I'd imagine they feel quite similar.  Clean look, great feel, a bit of tech help from some tungsten and TPU.  Great irons.

If it's feel, the Srixon irons are fantastic forgings and go through turf like magic.

New Level PF-2 ->thin topline, small offset

New Level 902 ->a little more of both, but just a great design

Mizzy MP-20 MMC ->what the others said

Check out Maltby‘s offerings, too. Underrated and affordable.

I'm in the same situation as you looking at many of these same offerings.  I'm set up to do a session with my fitter next month and asked him to have the Muira TC-201 available to try (which he has).  Coming from my old MP-33 and MP-18 blades it will be interesting to see what set I end up choosing.

I’m still gaming Callaway X Forged from 2017-18, such a great feeling iron. I would definitely take a long look at Srixon ZX 7, Mizuno mp20 mmc are good as well. Apex pro will offer more forgiveness and built in tech, but they don’t feel as good as it sounds like you are looking for.

Hands down the Honma TR20 V  I have played the MMC and hit the T100s.  No contest in feel  and forgivness.

Good luck

oh man those TP MC's are my faovrite irons of all time!! had them for 7 years

Ive recently played Mizuno MP20 MMC, Srixon z785, Srixon Z Forged, and New Level 623. The z785's will be most forgiving IMO. MP20 MMC have the best feel and also very good forgiving

the Z Forged and NL 623 are the most "forgiving" and easiest to hit blade wise but not as forgiving as the z785 or MP20 MMC. I think it would be splitting hairs between any of them honestly. If you're a good ball striker with irons you shouldn't have a problem with any of them

Maltby DBM in the matte black are so sweet, can’t go wrong, built my self a set 4-GW and don’t know if I’d switch irons for a very long time. As a relatively newer player, this was my first real set I bought new. They’re a great offering for those looking for something forgiving while still getting a nice sleek look similar to a players iron.
