Driving Iron Shaft - 2 Iron - Taylormade P790 UDI

Hi everyone,

Quick question here on Taylormade P790 UDI 2-iron shaft.

My current Setup is:

  • 4-PW - X100 Tour Issue - Mizuno MP5
  • Wedges - S400 Tour Issue
  • Driver - Evenflow White T1100 X-Stiff 70g

For the 2 Iron shaft, should I use:

  • Steel Shaft:            X100 Tour Issue
  • Graphite Shaft:      ???

Currently, I am using KBS C-Taper 120S shaft for my driving iron. However, it just doesn't feel good, i.e. I can't feel the shaft during my swing, so I was considering the X100 shaft which feels much better. My worries are that X100 will be too heavy for 2-iron and also distance loss.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thank you!

Ben

I have steel that matches my set in my UDI. It is also short for my specs (TM steel standard length, but irons are +0.75” so both my 2i and 4i are 39.25”).

Between the heavy shaft and the shorter length, it is probably 15-20 yards shorter than previous 2i builds I’ve had that were about an inch longer and lighter graphite shafts.  But I also find that I hit this current (steel) club lower trajectory and with a tighter dispersion.  It’s purpose in my bag is a wind-cheating fairway finder, so I’ve been very happy with the switch to steel!

Why don't you look at an X100 AMT Tour White shaft?  Same profile as the X100 but I believe the 2 iron shaft is 106gm.  I'm actually using them in all my irons for the first time and have been happy with them.  Slightly higher flight in the long irons than the regular Dynamic Gold shafts, but not drastically different.  I think they feel quite similar.  And way cheaper than a graphite shaft so if its a failed experiment you won't regret it for too long...

I was gonna mention x100 Amt white also!! I had it in my Srixon u85 2i and it was alot of fun to hit

@Benedicttan88otherwise you should really consider the Nippon GOST. X stiff and Tour x stiff. Very stable yet smooth shaft. I personally agree a regular DG X100 will be too heavy in that spot. AMT White or the Nippon GOST should both be around that 106g mark. If cost isn't an issue, id go Nippon

Thanks everyone and @JoeFrigo!

Is the Nippon GOST of a similar feel closer to the KBS C Taper or the DG X100? Because the feel of the X100 feels very different from the KBS C-Tapers, and I probably dont want to get something of a similar feel with the C-Tapers..

Definitely does not feel like a C-Taper. There is absolutely nothing I like about C-taper.. NO feel to it at all.

The GOST is described by Nippon as an extension of the Modus 105 but I dont find that to be true. Nippon 105 feels too loose and light for my liking. The GOST plays stiffer to flex. Id personally put it closer to an x100. With the GOST its important to get the right flex. Im an X flex in everything and usually fit in to "low/low shafts" (ventus black, ozik black tie, tensei white...). At 112mph swing speed we found the GOST 101g X flex was a bit much for me. I fit in to the 91g Tour Stiff flex

GOST X flex is 101g, Tour X is 112 so quite a difference

And for example, imagine the GOST is like the EvenFlow White 70x you're playing in driver. The EF White is a smooth feeling shaft but you know if you really go after it that its not gonna feel loose and get wild on you

I played X100 for almost 20 years and moved into XP 115’s after buying a set of TMB’s they came in.

ive  moved away from the DGX100 when I sold my MP 67’s on BST due to age and arthritis and moved to TMB’s with the XP 115’s but was recently fit for Modus 105s in HMB’s so I sold the 3-PW TMB’s, but I kept the TMB 2 iron and I plan on pulling my XP 115 X100 shaft out of my TMB at PGASS today, and throwing an 85 gram graphite shaft in it (PX Catalyst 80 6.0)

The XP 115’s are NOT high launch/ spin like the XP 95’s. People see XP and assume, but they are Mid/Mid. For me, they launched a little higher than the DG X100, and spin about the same.

My swing speed with a 7 iron is 94mph with a moderate tempo and easy transition. Driver is 113-115 mph

The XP 115 X100 were a seemless transition from DG X100. I think they are somewhere in between a DG105x and a DG120X. They feel more like the DG105x but closer to DG120X weight at 114grams.  They might just be a good fit for you. I had a AMT white X100 in the TMB 3 iron and didn’t like it. I pulled it and put in the XP 115 X100. I liked the weight (not too light and still could feel the head) and I liked the flight better (more of a boring trajectory than high, lower than the AMT for me with less spin)

I like a graphite shaft in them. Dont like a 2 iron with a standard iron shaft.

Maybe drop down in weight on an iron shaft. Like the SL or XP.

AD Di or Evenflow are both good choices
