4 wood or lofted down 5 wood....suggestions welcome!

Recommended Posts

Hey!

Currently playing an Epic Flash SZ 3 wood at 16’ and as good as this club is it just goes too far for what I want and I’d rather not lift up and close the face!

I have a few holes at my new course where I want a 240 yard tee shot and the SZ goes 260 easily

Looking at the options for this year I’m open to suggestions ready to demo a few when we reopen!

TSi3 16.5’ - May still go too far

Epic Speed #5 wood - Seen this is a low spin monster so may be a good choice

SIM2ti #5 lofted down - nice and open face and looks to be quite hot

SIM Max2 16.5’ - May still go too far

The next club in my bag will be a 19.5’ SIM2 Hybrid and am expecting that to be a 225 yard club then to my #4 iron at 210yds

I use a G410 5w (17.5) but I turn it down to 16.5* on flat mode... I carry it about 225-230 with approx 6-10 yards of roll depending on conditions.  Works great off the tee for shorter par4s and

Buy the 5 wood head to match your 3 wood and put it on the 3 wood shaft.

I dropped the 3 wood for a G410 5 wood and love it. Am able to use it a lot more both off the deck and off the turf and so much easier to launch and hold greens on par 5s. I feel like the loss of dist

Choke down the 3 wood? I'd be thinking of the grand scheme of things and not just buy one club for one course unless you're going places in the golfing world and plan to really compete. That's just me.

You can't really go wrong with what you listed. All solid options. Just make sure to get fit and make sure you're hitting targets and windows.

to me the 5 wood is more versatile if its a lower spin head.  the small head is better out of the rough and i mostly use it off the deck anyway.  I guess it just depends on the conditions and your preference. my old 910f 4 wood goes about the same distance as this 5 wood but the ts3 is way more forgiving.

If your miss isn't a hook, then a 5wd opened up a bit might do the trick.  if that still goes to far, you can always set it closer to neutral, increase the loft and spin a bit and maybe that hits the yardage you're trying to achieve.

I think the Callaway 4W is usually different size than 5W. In your case, the 4W is 175cc (Actually bit bigger than the 3W @ 173cc). 5W comes in at 154cc.

My preference has always been bit smaller 5w head than the 3w for versatility, but guess its about your preference.

Im sure the MOI shift of bigger head, and CG will also play a part in ball flight differences if there are any. Typically I tend to hit deeper bigger faced woods a bit lower than smaller counterparts.

Seems a bit overkill to have loft gap of less than 4 degrees going from 3w to your next wood, but SZ models do launch degree or two lower than non-SZ counterparts, not to mention reduction in spin.

SIM2 heads seem to be bit smaller, even coming from original SIM, and 5W comes in at 140cc. I love the look of TM 5woods at address, but I feel like sometimes it doesnt spin quite enough for it to be a exactish yardage club.

Hope it helps!

If you want it to be just one club, the 5w lofted down is probably what I’d do. I had an epic flash 5w lofted down to 17 and it was good. I liked it a bit better than a rogue 4w (also at 17) that it replaced after a warranty issue. I was finding I never really hit it off the deck. So I flipped it for a mavrik 4w at 16.5. The bigger head is better off the tee for me. I can hit it farther than a 15 degree 3 wood and the extra loft helps with control. But if I had to hit it off the deck I’d want the shorter 5w shaft and smaller head.

5W lofted down with 3 wood shaft length so in effect a 4W. Also prefer the smaller head of the 5 wood. Playing Ping G410 5 wood and its not going anywhere as it is long and very forgiving.

I'm playing the exact fairway- Epic Flash Sub Zero 3w lofted up to 16.  I went to the Sub Zero model for tee purposes as I would spin the crap out of my Epic 3w when I swipe across it with the face open.  I like the Sub so much better off the tee but not so much off the deck.  I struggle to elevate it properly enough at my speed even at 16 degrees.  I've wondered about going to a 5w lofted down but I think I'll just go +2 on my neck and play it at 17 degrees and hope it doesn't go too far left.

Since I’m a natural drawer of the ball, I decided to order the Ping G425 5w which I’ll set in the -1 flat setting which should be effectively a 4w at 16.5* in my preferred flat angle. Coupled with the AV Orange Tensei and should have a winner.
