no need to justify, it’s allowed by the rules. If it wasn’t imbedded then the ball just gets replaced with no penalty if he wanted to cheat it would have been easier to go that route and replace it with a better lie than dropping.

Maybe he realized after he picked it up  that all the WRXers would crucify him so he called in the official at that point!?

 

Although I’ve defended his actions in regards to this incident, for the life of me I don’t understand why he doesn’t always err on the side of caution. If there is anything that could be questionable for him, why he doesn’t get an official ruling immediately.  Every time. 
 

I guess maybe he just doesn’t care.

I disagree. You could have been able to determine if his ball was embedded or not without picking it up. Since he did, if it was not in fact embedded, he would have been given a penalty.

Could be, but that's not up to you to determine.  It is up to the player and his group.
