Sorry, Patrick. No one ever picks up their ball before a ruling occurs. Unless they are uncertain of the outcome and want to make it nearly impossible for an official to get you a proper ruling.

What he’s saying sounds legit to me. If seven people say it didn’t bounce and they don’t have immediate access to replay, how else should he proceed?

Them (Nance and Faldo) harping on wether a ball could imbed after a bounce is pointless. As far as anyone involved was concerned it didn’t bounce. When the official said there was a lip, it’s over.

The issue is not the bouncing. I’m fairly confident that the ball ended up where it did on the second bounce. The issue is whether Reed pressed the ball down to fake an embedded ball. If he did, he would pick it up before the official got there to cover his tracks. Reed didn’t let the official fully do his job. I just don’t see a 1-2’ bounce in 3” rough embedding itself no matter how wet it is.

No, because their point is that they think that the mark was made by Reed pushing the ground down with his hand, not from the bounce.

The only way that ball could be embedded after that bouncer is if the ground is very wet/soft.  But that sure does not look likely in this case.

 

 It is weird PR would remove the ball before an official comes up.  One would think the proper routine is embedded in every tour player’s brain, but not PR’s.

 

 And what is this weirdness with the rules official poking his finger in there and saying yes, he feels a lip.  Really?  Maybe he just didn’t want to deal with PR.

 

i guess you can have both a situation where all is within rules and bad optics making PR the continued lightning rod.

At what point do they no longer use video to assist in rulings?  It was clear on video and would not have taken much time to ask someone to review the footage to see if it bounced.  If any player should be called into question on some BS it's Reed.  I'd sure as hell want to have the footage reviewed before issuing the ruling.

The ground is wet. They’ve had 4” of rain in the last week and 1.5” yesterday. I still don’t think that you can embed a ball from 1’ high in 3” grass even when it’s really wet.

you can't argue with physics.  never in the history of the world has a golf ball, after bouncing, embedded itself in thick and deep rough.
