If you were me, what would you work on?

Recommended Posts

Just a swing from today, nothing but time to work on my swing. I really dislike the way my hips move, I feel they don’t rotate enough back so they get in the way a little at impact?

Interested in all/any thoughts, here is a YouTube link where you should be able to slow it down for anyone who’s that interested (probably nobody)

thanks

Your arms are lifting excessively, instead of following your chest.  As a result, hands lack depth.  That’s more the issue than hip turn.

Could be due to the mat but you look too close and arms work away from the body in takeaway requiring the lift monte noted - your arms and pivot are disconnected.    An inch further would get you a bit more upright and hands more under shoulders instead of inside.     Or you can make that move but need to have your torso involved - either way your torso pivot and arms need to be in better synch.

Appreciate the feedback, nice having a different set of eyes to notice something and look yourself.

Will give it a go and see if it looks any better, my lead arm is getting a little upright & I was heel strikey today. First time hit balls in a while so maybe just stood a hair too close

Good spot you must have done this before 😉

Towel under the arm pits be a good drill to correct this?

Not fond of that drill because it promotes over connection.  Sometimes there is no drill and you just have to make the proper movement .

brushed up on a few terms and makes sense, more depth going back & hands working into and with body shouldn’t be an issue to work on

appreciate it you’ve helped me a few times over the years il repay you one day in the near future 👍

There's absolutely nothing wrong with your backswing. With your current swing, if you're not a +handicap I'd say you need to play a lot more and work on your short game.

Appreciate it, short game isn’t terrible but isn’t as good as it needs to be at times to keep rounds going.

I’m a scratch at the moment, hoping to push it to +1/2 this year with the new WHS in the UK

What's the lowest your index has been? What are your lowest rounds in competition and on what kind of courses?

I played as a kid and started again 6/7 years ish ago so only played 5 years of comps.
First handicap - 9

Year 2 - 6

Year 3 - 4

Year 4 - 2

Last year - 0

I’ve been breaking par in comps for the last 2 years, just the way the UK handicap system works it takes forever to get down.

My best in a competition is -3 68 (a couple times), never had a seriously low one in or out of competition really, not sure if it’s mental (doesn’t feel like it) or I’m just not good enough yet to give myself a good chance at it

A mixture of courses, I usually stick to member comps which is a level par slope rating course at about 6500 yards.

Great info. Good to hear. How old are you? In your immediate area, are there guys who are significantly better than you? Guys who contend for local regional and national titles? If so, do you ever play with those types of guys?

I'm 24 so certainly no spring chicken, couple of us at scratch to +2 in my area but I've always been chasing them after a late start at around 18. I don't play with any elite amateurs really though no, just friends who are low handicaps (+1 to 17). Would love too as I know it'd bring my game on but without entering regional comps not really got a chance too, I may a try play a little more this year in them.

I've just got a big advantage with my long game so helped me get to this point pretty easy just working on the scoring finer details now I think. Help if I lived in America like you lucky(ish) bunch!

Definitely looks like a pretty decent swing to work with.  Your observation looks correct to me.

I feel like I would blame an incomplete hip turn, on an incomplete weight shift at the top of the backswing. your 80% there, but it seems like I see you leave the front foot a little too loaded.

It is hard to tell exactly with that small clip but you might consider.....it looks to me like there is still too much weight on the front foot so you have a false weight shift to initiate the downswing. your downward move appears to be rock your left foot forward onto the ball of the left foot.

I like to lift my left heel up a little bit at the top, my instructor says a good initiation of the downswing is to step on the bug under your left heel smash the bug to start the downswing.

So in order for you to put power in, you continue to freewheel the hips through a bit too early, left side is soft. your hands move to the left and across too early after release instead of down the line and up. see tigers high down the line release.

To have a firm left side, many players lock their knee out, I believe in hitting into a firm left side to release the club. however we need to be careful, becasue that leads to Tiger Woods knee injuries, but still a mostly firm left side works well,

Just some thoughts looks like a good swing to his work with.  looks like just minor tweaks needed.

which reminds me of something I did very early many years ago that helps feel release down the line, a drill from david leadbetter.... perfect in an open field, actually throw your club at a target, 100 yds away

release the club down the line, and let it go, to get the feeling of the club moving down the target line, it should fly directly towards the  target. feels good.

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/how-to-feel-a-proper-release

Good luck
