Bending wedge 2 degrees strong or just buy lower loft?

Recommended Posts

I have 2 Vokey wedges:

SM7 54.10 S Grind

SM7 58.10 S Grind

If I wanted to switch back to 52, 56, 60. Instead of buying new wedges could I just bend by current wedges strong? They are in 8/10 condition.  e.g

52.08 S Grind

56.08 S Grind

60.04 L Grind

I’m more of a sweeper so the reduction in bounce won’t effect me.

Is there anything wrong with this approach apart from having 54,58,60 stamped on the wedges in the bag

Vokeys can be bent a couple of degrees without drama. You'll see a modest increase in offset at address, which may or may not suit your eye, and the bounce angles will decrease in line with your list

I wouldn’t be bending a 60L strong. Playing it stock. Bending the 54 and 58 two degrees strong

sorry, I was just joking around making fun of myself for digging a bit.  you would decrease bounce by 2 degrees, no worries on that.  the leading edge is probably already worn in so also...no worries

Vokeys can be bent a couple of degrees without drama. You'll see a modest increase in offset at address, which may or may not suit your eye, and the bounce angles will decrease in line with your list above. A friend of mine used to play a couple of tweaked Vokeys, one of which was knocked four degrees strong; a 56.10 knocked down to 52 degrees. That one, to my eye, looked a bit ungainly, but he was bagging a set of Zing 2s at the time, and was happy with its wonky, offset look next to his iron set. The 60 degree Vokey he played, set to 58 degrees, looked fine to my eye though.

Two degrees isn't a huge amount to bend a wedge, and even with a chrome wedge you shouldn't see any crazing or flaking of the plated finish.

i prefer to buy less loft and bend back.  (less offset and less of a chance to dig). a 60 L bent 2 degrees strong scares me to even think about. 🙂. If your wedges are more than a couple years old and you play/practice regularly then its about time for new ones, especially the sw/lw probably. For me lw is a 2 year club, sw 3 years, gw 4.

Wear of wedges, and leading edge and sole configuration should be considered.   It's cheaper to bend than buy new.  Less bounce is not a bother to me either, since I sweep 2-8i.  However, the increased offset may or may not be noticeable.

I have just bent a 58 degree Vokey to 56 and it’s been absolutely fine. I had bought it with the intention of doing that. I like to use 56 from the sand and the 58K Grind which had 14 degrees of bounce was a little much for me but I loved the grind and like my SW to play at 56 so I went for it. Pleased with the results. The loft and bounce are just right and the grind is just what I was looking for.

The SM8 is entering Year 2, so I'm not sure how much $$ you can get for the SM7 wedges. I'd go ahead and bend them and use them up.
