Who has a 7 Wood in their Bag?

1221

Recommended Posts

Changing my setup before the new season and looking at the tough part of the bag. My Irons are 4-PW so have room for 2 clubs inbetween the driver and the 4 Iron [Have 4 Wedges]. One of those clubs will be a 3/4/5 wood still undecided and the other is the tough one. Alot of tour professionals lately I see gaming Hybrids and 7 woods compared to 2 Irons. So wondering what people have in that gap and if many have 7 Woods. Not a huge fan of hybrids so looking towards a higher lofted wood. Any feedback or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I am right now. Not super sold on it yet, though. In theory it should be great for me since I use that spot in my bag for long Par 3's, choking up when needed, Par 5's etc - things I need a nice landing angle for.

Previously had a Mav Pro there and didnt love it - and had an Apex 19 hybrid which I was doing really great with.

Might go back to the Apex 19 but gonna give this 7w a shot for a bit longer.

I've tried several shafts all tipped 1".

My issues are consistency due to the longer shaft and utility when needing to do punch outs and hitting off less than ideal lies.

Ping G410 20.5° 7 wood just went into the bag a couple weeks ago. It has earned its spot already.

I need a good 5 or 7 wood.  I may go older generation if I can find a face angle I like.

I had the same issue. I switched from a 3w to a 5W opened slightly. But I couldn't find a 2nd 5w that I liked closed. I looked back on older models and found the last 7w or 5HL made by T was the r15. To me at least, on the STD setting the face angle is open and based on the spec chart it comes 20.5*. I closed it to 21* and it is perfect now. Managed to find an OG Blueboard 93x and never looked back.

For many years, I gamed a V-Steel 21* 7-wood that I could absolutely rope sky-high like 215-220.  When I did my full bag fitting 2018, I learned that the spin rate was through the roof - we're talking 8-iron type spin  - so I got fit into a 19* hybrid (see sig) that went only a couple yards farther, but with better spin and descent angle.  But, if something happened to my hybrid, I would have no qualms about tossing that nana wood right back in my bag.

@1221 Not sure what loft your 4-iron is, but the progression in my bag is 14.5* fairway, 19* fairway, 23* 4-iron.  The 19* is a Cobra F8+ 4-5 wood set at the maximum loft.

Not technically a 7-wood, but within 1 or 1.5 degrees of a lot of the 7-woods I see being bandied about these days.

Before the UK lockdown I put in a Cobra KING Speedzone 7W and it has fast become one of my favourite clubs in the bag. I have it lofted up high as I need the higher launch. It's a great clubs off the tee on tight holes but great from the fairway into the green. With the high launch gets a great soft landing.

It's a great club. High ball flight, soft landing. Great out of the rough. Look on tour, Brendan Steele, Fleetwood, Dufner, Jessica Korda, and many others are using them. Dustin Johnson has also been testing one.

Guilty your honour!

Who doesn’t nowadays?

Whatever number is on the bottom they just equate to the old 4w and 5w numbers .. 17 and 20 seem to be the magic sauce for most players .. including the worlds best

For me I can’t say enough about the g400 series five and seven woods both turned down to big minus

I’m playing a TSi2 4 wood and 7 wood in that gap. I have the same bag setup as you; driver, fairways, 4-9, 4 wedges and putter. This is the one that makes the most sense for me. I’m not a hybrid fan at all. Depending on the course I’ll swap the 7 wood with a SIM UDI but everything else stays.

7 wood has been great for me.  I streamlined my woods, dropped the 3 wood, lowered my Epic Flash 5 wood a degree to play at 17* like a 4 wood, then lowered my Epic Flash 7 wood a degree to play at 20*, and increased my 4 hybrid a degree to play at 23*.  Nice 3* gaps, cover a lot of bases off the tee and the deck, and have less choices to mull over.  Plenty of good options, but the benefit of something like the Epic Flash is the adjustability, and ability to try out different shafts easily.

Specific to the 7 wood though, it really is a fun club.  Very easy to hit, very versatile, and just flat out performs.  No shame in a 7 wood, and I have playing partners who have 9 woods and higher in their bags and hit them well.  YMMV.

If it makes any difference. I use a Ping G, 5 & 7 wood both turned to the big minus. Been playing them for a few years and really like them. 7 wood is great, especially on long par 3's or out of the rough.

Since 2012, I have been using some combination of 4W + 7W. Models have changed a couple of times, but 4+7 is constant.

I have only average distance, so my 4i got refitted with a lighter graphite hybrid shaft. It now makes a great driving iron for tight holes. Can you get a lower shot out of your 4i if needed?

As for 7W vs. long irons, PGA Tour's Scott Stallings said this in a Sept 2019 Golf Digest article (p. 36):

"My 7 wood is a more versatile than a utility iron. I can hit it high or low, and the height on full shots into par 5s is so helpful, especially when you're coming in from 240 to 260 yards. I've found a utility 2- or 3-iron doesn't stop very well from that distance."

Note: Give the 4W a try. Many golfers find the 4W is more reliable - and carries almost as far - as a 3W.

Love my GBB Epic 7-wood.

That being said, if your description of your current bag is correct, you've only got room for 1 more club:
Driver (1 club)
4-PW (7 clubs)

4 Wedges (4 clubs)
Putter (1 club)

That's 13 clubs...

Just thinking about my persimmon 5w from the early 90's .. it was 20* and was my go to 210 - 215 club

Now overall that is amazing because of the balls (maxfi balata HT) and the shorter / heavier steel shaft

right now the 20 is my 7w and it is 225 carry .. 10 more yards only

Not the incremental gains you see with the irons with all the aggressive loft creep downwards

Yes. Great club.

I'm disappointed Mizuno doesn't make one, but can't go wrong with 7-woods from Titleist, Ping or TM.

I added one the 2nd half of last season and it has been a game changer for me. I wish I had done it years sooner. I picked up the TM SIM 7w after seeing DJ bag one last season. It is so easy to hit, it's ridiculous. I have to admit...it's way more effective than my 3i was...maybe about 5-7 yards further than my 3i. It's one of those FW that you have so much confidence in putting a good swing on the ball, you practically lick your chops when you get to pull it out of your bag during a round....that was NOT the case with my 3i (or the myriad of hybrids I've also had over the years) prior to picking one up.

For some reason, I was always prone to the ugly hook with any hybrids I've had over the last 15 years...not so with the 7w.

I'm currently using a 210 M6 fairway.

It sits really well between my 16.50 TS2 fairway and my Srixon z785 4-iron. I'm able to carry it about 220-yd and it's very easy to get airborne.

For me, the best thing is how forgiving it is combined with the smaller head. It feels a lot like a tour-style 5w. It reminds me of my old Nike VR Pro Ltd. 5w.
