Who has a 7 Wood in their Bag?

1221

Recommended Posts

I have one that I like but it is currently on the bench.  It is great at the range and from a mostly flat lie in the fairway.  In those situations I hit it higher and about 5-7 yds further than a 21 deg hybrid.  I can also squeeze a tad more from it when it makes sense to use as a tee club on par 4s or for advancing ball from turf on unreachable par 5s.

However, the 21 deg hybrid remains more versatile for me.  High enough, far enough, better from tricky lies, and easier to hit the low bullet.

Main factor in the current semi-permanent set-up was moving to a shorter, heavier hybrid shaft which really increased consistency.

Since I hit most of my clubs too low I carry a Srixon 7 wood for when I need a higher ball flight than I can get with my 3 or 4 hybrid. That being said, I don't use it too often and could drop it from my bag if I need to swap in something else.

I play the TS2 7 wood with a GD AD TP 8S shaft.  It is my 220 yd club and fills the gap very nicely between my 4 wood and 23* hybrid.

All this talk of 7 woods got me all hot and bothered, so I had to go downstairs and toss the V-Steel in the bag - irrespective of the freshly falling snow outside.

Buying my 7 wood is probably the most rewarding golf purchase I have made in the last 20 years.

I used to have your exact setup. I loved the 917 F2. Still my favorite fairway wood. I switched to TS2 last year and did not like them as much, especially the 7 wood. It was fine, and went farther than my 917, but the 917 was so easy to control and would stop on a dime.

I did a test 2 years ago to see what would best fit my 4 iron slot as there was only an 8 yard difference between it and the 5 iron. I tried the 4-iron, 21* hybrid, and 21* 7WD. After 90 days of testing on the course I went with the 7WD. It's a smaller  head and similar in size to today's hybrid that I've used off and on since 2007. It now has permanent residence in the bag with it's 4th shaft.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

I need a good 5 or 7 wood.  I may go older generation if I can find a face angle I like.

Look at Exotics CB2 and TMag V-Steel. With modern shafts they can still compete.

My Ping G410 7 wood is one of my very favorite clubs. Excellent for long par 3's as I can hit the 7 wood high and land it soft. Better trajectory than a hybrid for my swing.

I am evaluating one now to see if it'll work better than a 5-iron.

No doubt for some. Last time I played a 7 wd was a Cally Rogue in 2018 - nice club at 41 inches and D3. But I already have a 3/4 wood and 5 wd, and thought the 4H might be a better fit -getting the right shaft that gives me a high-mid/mid-high flight is key for me.

7 wd is great over trees ... but none of us need that... 🙂

You can always use a bigger headed hybrid - look at Tour Edge. The EXS220 has a mini fairway look as does the new 721 product - but that stock shaft is not for me.

I agree it can be an ego thing, but it can also be as simple as not liking the looks of a high lofted wood. My standard miss with a fairway wood or a hybrid is a pull hook that starts left and goes lefter.....so I hate any club that looks closed at address. My 4 wood is a TEE that I love, so I’m trying to find a matching 7 wood to compete with my i15 19* hybrid. We shall see.

I love the 7 wood but not so much in the wind. Playing in Florida the winds are 8 to 16 MPH just about everyday ( close to the gulf) I prefer Hybrids there can hit them low and running also can get up when needed. I play in North Carolina in the summer and the wind factor is very low that when the 7 wood comes out and is very effective. Agree 4-7 is a great combo in the right place.

I bought a Rogue 7 wood last year with an L-flex shaft and put an Elements Wind 9F5 in that bad boy at 41" and D3 swingweight.  Can't wait to try it out when our frozen hell thaws out.  I will rotate it with my 21° Rogue hybrid depending on wind and course conditions.   Should be a great club for a 225-235 carry distance and quick stopping on the green.  I used to carry a V-Steel 7 wood with X100 in it and it was freaking money.  So easy to hit.  I miss that club.  Sold it for $10 a couple years ago on fleabay.  Idiot!
