Who has a 7 Wood in their Bag?

I bought a Rogue 7 wood last year with an L-flex shaft and put an Elements Wind 9F5 in that bad boy at 41" and D3 swingweight.  Can't wait to try it out when our frozen hell thaws out.  I will rotate it with my 21° Rogue hybrid depending on wind and course conditions.   Should be a great club for a 225-235 carry distance and quick stopping on the green.  I used to carry a V-Steel 7 wood with X100 in it and it was freaking money.  So easy to hit.  I miss that club.  Sold it for $10 a couple years ago on fleabay.  Idiot!

Bought G400 9 wood with senior then put a Elements Wind 7F4 tipped couple inches ..... created a monster.

Ping G410 7 Wood, so very easy to hit.

All this talk of 7 woods got me all hot and bothered, so I had to go downstairs and toss the V-Steel in the bag - irrespective of the freshly falling snow outside.

The 7 wood shootout is one of my favorite offseason activities! Currently playing a Cobra F8 with a Phenom Voodoo shaft. Looking at the new Cobra with the Fuji Motore and the Callaway Speed with Hzrdus Smoke or Mitsubishi MMT. Or others — PXG 0211 also looks good. To me 7 wood is one of the more versatile clubs and I hit more consistently than a hybrid.

On GolfWRX I am an average length player, but at my home course one of the longer players.  I play Driver, 4 wood, 7 wood.  The spot between my 4 wood and 4 iron can vary though.  Right now it is sloppy and wet at my home course, so the 7 wood works well since there is little run out as a tee club on a few holes.  During the summer, the 7 wood has been used on a couple of our longer par 5's to get home in two since we have forced carries over water on 3 out of 6 par 5's and 2 are on the longer side.  During the summer it is no longer needed for tee shots on doglegs since the 21* 4 iron will carry and run a bit and not go through the fairway.

  • 4 Wood - Company that shall not be named, turned down 1* and open on a UST Mamaiya Black
  • 7 Wood - Callaway Epic Flash turned down 1 on UST Mamiya Black
  • Hybrid - Ping G400 17*
  • Irons = Sub 70 699 Pro U 4 iron
  • Irons - Srixon ZX7 on X100 AMT White - possibly re-shafting to recoil 110
  • Wedges - Cleveland 50* 588  (Working on the rest) all on UST Recoil 110

Today's 7 woods are so much different from years ago.  Now they fly high but still relatively flat.  Previously, they spun to the moon and went nowhere in the wind.  So for me, the 7 wood flies like yesterday's 5 wood.  The question is more who has a 9 wood (23-24 degrees) vs the iron/hybrid.

I ditched my 4h for a 9w a few seasons ago. The wood launches higher, and stops on a dime. Excellent club for long par 3s.

I put in a 7wd in the bag a little over a year ago. One of the best changes I've made to my bag EVER!. I used to carry a 3 hybrid, but the 7wd is just better all around. From the fwy, much easier to launch, much more forgiving. And from the rough it is an absolute game changer. So much easier to dig it out and get it up in the air. I have hit so many good shots with it that it's become my favorite club.

This is interesting...and touches on my dilemma.  Would you/anyone care to share thoughts on ball flight and peak height of a 21* 7w versus a 21* Hybrid??

I used to game a 7w in middle/early high school but grew out of hit as I became a better player and found the 7w going uncontrollably high.  I tried hybrids but had to abandoned them for a driving aliron stop the bag cuz I have a naturally high ball flight and found hybrids to be hook machines.

Now with the advancement of lightweight steel shafts and the nippon GOST, I'm thinking of gamin a 7w or hybrid again.

I tend to hit hybrids better and find they are more versatile (e.g., can be used from trickier lies).  That said, a well struck 7w produces a better ballflight for me:  high, penetrating, steep land angle, etc.  I’ve been working this off-season to develop enough comfort and consistency with it to keep it in the bag.  Getting close.  A slightly heavier and stouter shaft appears to have helped a little.

Despite improvement in my personal 7w game it still feels like a bit of an ‘area weapon’ to me whereas the hybrid feels easier to align and subsequently hit on a narrower line.

It's amazing how popular something becomes when the guys swinging 120 mph on tv adopt it.  It started with hybrids replacing long irons (2 or 3 hybrid) and is now at the 7 wood.  Apparently high and straight became fashionable overnight?

In all fairness, I do think the head designs / CG placement and how the ball behaves in the air has changed a ton in the last 10 years.  Last 5 years I am not as sure if there's been a big change or people just changing their preferences / what is socially acceptable.

I may be imagining things, but it seems the pros are now trying to stick their approaches on the par 5s. Ten plus years ago when they were averaging 300 yds off the tee it was good enough to barely reach a par 5 in two with a 3 wood or long iron. Many balls rolled up on to the green. Now that many are hitting 330+ yds, I think I see a more aerial attack on the fives.

I don't disagree with this but I've also found that the integral where it makes a meaningful difference is so small that I've just stuck with the 7w.  I do think the small head/shorter shaft of the hybrid is much better from uneven lies in the rough, and there will be some bad lies where the hybrid works a tad better.  But at least for me, it's usually not that different vs. punching a 6-iron down the fairway.

I've also found that I like as many clubs as possible in the bag to look, feel, swing the same (don't want to combo irons either).  I'm probably an exception because I rarely practice but it was just odd having 1 hybrid in the bag that you could go a round or two without hitting.  I don't dislike hybrids so maybe sometime I will move to all hybrids.  My issue is that I cannot get enough height out of anything sub 20 degrees - just hit line drives, so I will likely always need at least one fairway in the bag.

Possible.  Some players like CH3 have also said they play so many 240-250 par 3s these days, and it helps a lot there.

I think we are in the same place here for the most part.

I KNOW the 7w is a better fit for my bag.  I've been working hard to get all of my true "approach" clubs to fly to the same height and land angle (i.e., "hit my window" as the cool kids would say...).

For my SS and delivery, a 21 deg FW will get there more reliably than a 21 deg hybrid - on well struck balls...  I just need to put in the range time plus some bonus balls from different lies on the course to increase my percentage of 'well struck balls'.  Currently, 'good' is better with 7w but 'not so good' is much better with hybrid and I just need to close the gap a bit more.

You make a good point.  How you manage the 'good' and 'not so good' shots with these clubs probably tips the scales to which one a player should use...we can quip about too-high or too-low ball flights but ultimately that is baked into your 'good' and 'not so good' shot theory.

I have been contemplating going to a 7 wood for months.  I have PXG hybrid that I like but still goes left, just not as bad as other hybrids.  Leaning towards trying a SIM2 7 wood to see if it fits the gap.  It is not a club that I would hit a lot right now but can see myself utilizing if I knew it was not going to left and not going to hit me in the chin.

My buddy sometimes carries a 7wd.  After seeing this thread I looked at his.  WOW!  No way I can look down at that head.

Last I heard, Vijay carried one, and so does DJ; both have benefited from it too.  The question remains, will it make its way into the bag of amateurs playing in regional events?   I suspect carrying a 7wd is like using a 7i to chip, just not convinced.  What tour guys carry does not define my bag or game.   I am glad it works for who ever goes down that road.

Of course it does.

No doubt, and before hybrids it was even worse.  Somehow the advent of the hybrid allowed the people with big egos to "save face" and not give up their macho card.  Hybrids allowed good players to replace the 1 and 2 iron without putting an old man's club in the bag.  Finally common sense is going mainstream.  I carried one of those little headed TM baffy's with 19* on it back in the day, a precursor to the hybrid, even that got some funny looks on occasion.  Of course back in the 80's some good players replaced their Wilson Staff 1 irons with Eye 2 1 irons, sort of like playing a mixed GI set today.

No 7 wood this year ... 9 wood! But I'll be playing cranked down to 22.0, so very similar to my old 7 wood.
