Tips on how to get more vertical in the backswing??

Incorrect intentions before you swing cause a lot of what you're referring to. If someone views the swing as an up and down motion, they'll never improve their ballstriking.

And yet when OP posted his original problem, diagnosing it as not getting vertical in the backswing, @Valtiel said "no, it looks fine--that's not your issue."

He diagnosed the early extension issue.

Which you appeared to agree with...

His hips are so far back to begin with he has no choice but to thrust forward or he'd fall on his face. Our brains are wired to keep us balanced whether we're walking or hitting a golf ball. Viewing the downswing as a rounded motion rather than up and down cleans up a lot of issues. Backswing is individual to the player to slot the club correctly.

I'm just wondering how coaching someone about a rounded downswing from a bad address position, given the natural [as you mention] propensity of the brain to compensate for balance problems and work them out to avoid falling flat on your face, will stop him from early extending?

And if you're thrusting forward IN the backswing, you think you can fix that in the 0.2s it takes to make a downswing by focusing on hands?

It seems you agree that address position and early extension are a problem, but you're trying to focus on the problems that occur later [and likely as a result of] that compensation. Gotta fix one thing before you even have a chance at another.

He doesn't have to take my advice. Since you're a 23 handicap, maybe I can show you a thing or two.

Trust me, a lot of people could show me a thing or two! I'm working on my own swing after a long golf layoff, and that's why I'm here.

I still understand basic physics. If you lose a couple inches of hip depth on your backswing over 0.7-1s, you're not going to regain it on a 0.2s downswing unless you're superhuman. So it seems to me that's a big thing that needs to be corrected here.

Now i remember why i stopped visiting the instruction forum. Yikes, laneholt, not sure whats your DEAL, but give it a REST. @Valtiel ‘s advice was very solid. As a matter of a fact i have almost the same issue as the OP, maybe on a smaller scale, and i work on it all the time. I will say we always resort back to certain tendencies so something like this may need periodic attention for a long time.

I've been dealing with too flat of a backswing for a while, which allows my arms to outrace my body. As a result I have a tendency to get across the line and steep on the downswing. Looking to make my move more consistent, instead of relying on my timing. Any help is appreciated

Can we see a face on angle?

It looks like you may have your weight too much on the balls of your feet at the top of your back swing.

Whereas I think you'd be better off with the weight more on your back right heel.

It looks like your arms sort of take over on the backswing. Instead of having a more unified, full turn that includes more of your lower body.

And then from there, as others have said, you want to keep your hip depth and clear everything left. Instead of falling forward toward the ball.
