We can all tell you to add a driving iron or to tighten the loft differences in your wedges.  But have you actually actively thought about it as you are playing?  How many shots you face in a typical round where having another club would be useful.  More loft around the greens?  Better bunker club?  More controllable club from the tee on short par 4's?

When you play, how often do you think you would be better off with a different club than the one you are hitting.  Whatever comes up the most is what you should add.

I'm leaning driving iron for these reasons- my 5w is the most reliable club in the bag, but hitting into a headwind on the central plains can be an adventure.  About the only realistic shot that I wish I had that I currently don't is the low runner into the wind off the tee.  Sure I could learn to flight down my woods but....I know my limits lol.

Like my wife said, "Do you NEED 14 clubs?" 🤣

I have 12 clubs I currently play and can't seem to figure out what other 2 myself.

So I'm getting the bag set for this year, and it looks like this-

Driver (9*)

3W (14.5*)
5w (18*)
4h (22*)

5i-9i (25*-41*)
PW (46*)
GW (52*)
SW (58*)

I've considered adding another wedge and going to 50-54-58, but I have played the 3 wedge bag for years and never find myself wishing for another club.  Driving iron maybe????  Courses I play are not super long and have hard to medium conditions, with some tight off-the-tee landing zones.  Or do I just stick with 13 and enjoy carrying a lighter bag?

Thanks!

I like 4* loft gaps in my short irons. 46*, 50*, 54*, 58* would be my preference.

I'm in a similar boat. I was at 12 and just added a 5 iron back in as it was a shot I found I needed a few times when I've played outside my home courses. I'm going to continue and start the season with 52/58 but might migrate to 52/56/60 if for no other reason than that I have the room.

Leave the last spot open and fill it based on conditions/course.

Maybe pick up a strong 3w, 3h, driving iron, lob wedge, and a "mud" wedge (high bounce) and use them to fight wind, wetness, tight fairways, etc.

I carry the following:

Driver/3W/2H

3-PW

54/60

Putter

And I would happily add a 15th club to tighten the wedge gaps if I could. My advice would be to rethink the wedge gapping.

Your lowest iron is 25 degrees. Consider adding a long iron, in the range of 18-23 degrees to be of use instead of 3W/5W/4H, when you have an odd lie or you need an iron to punch out.

Over your next five to ten rounds, keep a record of every time you have a tweener shot or feel like you’d be more comfortable with a different club on the tee box. If a pattern emerges, fill that gap accordingly; if not, be patient until one does.

My setup is very close to your.

3W 15 - 240

3H 18.5 - 220

4-P

GW 52

SW 58

LW 64

The 64 is very much a vanity club.. I might pull it out once every 3-4 round when there is just no other option that might work out. I thought about taking it out but can't come up with another club to put in so I left it in the bag.

At one point I did do 3 wedge setup with 54/60. That worked out pretty well as well.

A left field option, but a one length 4 hybrid or utility.

That's what I did. Uses. High wind, punch shots under trees, bump and runs on to the green, any shot where I have a narrow fairway and need the added accuracy (provided there aren't any hazards in the way due to the lower flight and added roll out).

First thing I'd do, if were you, is to start referring to your 46, 52,and 58 degree wedges as pitching wedge, sand wedge, and lob wedge. That way you won't need a fourth wedge (as you're happy with three right now anyway). 🙂

Then, pick up a cheap s/h driving iron. In the past I've owned a Ping 1 iron (17 degree) and now have a Titleist 2 iron (18 degree). I never actually connect with it but when some folks look at it the bag they freak out believing, some how, that I actually know how to use it. Sometimes I'll take it out of the bag, swing it once or twice, then put it back and take out the 3 wood, just to mess with people's heads.

The man that introduced me to golf told me about this, so we both carried an "impossible" club just for fun when playing with other people.
