Callaway Apex TCB - U.S. Release???

okok

maybe the shaft played a role on that spin difference. I'm looking to drop spin/launch. I tried tcb with modus130 and spin was lower than my current setup tc201/mmt launch/height about the same.

can a 12 hdcp play these?

Tossing aside the caveat that there are so many variables that affect handicap (are you a good irons player? Or a poor one who makes up a lot of shots on the greens? etc.) and lots of different opinions from person to person on what looks/feels right:

It would definitely not be my first recommendation. To me, a 12 hdcp benefits from a bit of help/technology in irons, often including offset and weight moved around to the edges / low in the club. The TCB is super compact and has none of this. I'd suggest the XFCB as a better, similar starting point that also still gets some use on Tour.

I currently hover around an 11 hdcp and my experience with the TCB's is, unless you're an exceptional ball striker, these irons are best left to the pro's or very low cappers. I love the feel of them, but as soon as your strike strays slightly off center, your distance starts to suffer a lot. Also being a high launch/high spin iron player has made these tough to get reasonable distance out of. I have KBS $ Taper 120 shafts swinging 88-90mph and my 7 iron is topping out at 150-155yds with little to no rollout which is much less than my usual average. These things spin a lot! For me at least, but YMMV. They do look incredible in the bag, but unfortunately mine won't be in the bag much longer.

If you’re aiming toward irons like the TCB but need better ball striking, you’ve got standard Apex written all over you. Really great irons for the aspiring player who likes to know there’s a little help on mishits. If you can’t hit those go to the DCB. If you can’t hit the DCB …. keep trying. You can hit those.

Anybody have experience with these vs the 620cb?

I have somewhat. I have 620cbs and they have been great. The tcb in the mid and long irons are very similar to the 620 cb in terms of looks (offset, topline, bladelength) Might give the tcb a slight edge on forgiveness. In the short irons, the tcb will have less offset, but not by much.

I'd add that the TCB blade shape is a bit more rounded in the short irons. Overall offset with the TCB is more progressive throughout the set (more than 620CB in long, less than 620 in the short), but we're talking tiny differences here. TCB for me was a softer, denser feel - not necessarily better or worse, just a little different than the 620CB, which I find to have a pretty typical Titleist feel. I'd say they are two of the more similar irons on the market to each other. Ballflight was really similar for me, including ability to flight low/high.

I got mine and I did not check swing weights because the repair section at the store I bought them was super busy. Some irons felt good and some didn’t. I had them weighed a couple of days ago and weights were all over the place. The pw was d3.5 gap wedge d2 and 5 iron d6.5 etc. the golf shop called Callaway and they said there is nothing they can do

Sorry to hear that. Are the irons ordered standard length? I would use lead tapes on those with low SW and cut the shaft of those with too high SW.

They are px 6.0 1/4” over. I might try that. I thought with the weight port that’s screwed in the back it would no problem for Callaway to adjust SW, but they said no

That's very odd but not unusual for Callaway, mine are .50" over graphite and 4-AW are all within .5 on my scale which is a cheap one but gives me a idea of the differences. This is the 1st set of Callaway irons I have ever bought out of at least 15 different releases that were spot on out of the box.

But that being said that is what the weight is for and they have several different weights to choose from, you should call again and talk to someone different. I would suggest Cole Lewis @ 1-512-617-7131 he has handed many purchases for me and is very helpful.

I actually thought I’d hate the half/half. But if there’s full rust on the face, I find that the club face toe/heel lines disappear and I have a harder time framing the ball against the center of the club

Can you post a photo of the face? I assume heel/toe are still chrome and groove area only is rusty?

dunno if the face is supposed to rust or not. But either way the non-grooved areas are seemingly different material.
