Callaway Apex TCB - U.S. Release???

So I have a really stupid question, I have the Apex DCB's and they've been great, but I've been hitting the wedges too far (PW-43/AW-48, next wedge is 52 degree, which leaves about a 20+ yard gap), a good problem to have.  But was thinking of making this into a combo set where the Apex TCB's would be in the wedges, but I'd imagine that would leave a huge gap between the 9 iron and PW.  Anyone have any similar experiences, or easy solutions?

That is a big jump from DCB to TCB.

maybe look into the regular apex or apex pro.

I currently hover around an 11 hdcp and my experience with the TCB's is, unless you're an exceptional ball striker, these irons are best left to the pro's or very low cappers. I love the feel of them, but as soon as your strike strays slightly off center, your distance starts to suffer a lot. Also being a high launch/high spin iron player has made these tough to get reasonable distance out of. I have KBS $ Taper 120 shafts swinging 88-90mph and my 7 iron is topping out at 150-155yds with little to no rollout which is much less than my usual average. These things spin a lot! For me at least, but YMMV. They do look incredible in the bag, but unfortunately mine won't be in the bag much longer.

90 MPH 7 iron netting 155 yards seems way off doesn’t it? Any idea on your spin numbers?

I thought 90 MPH is like tour average and those guys hit it a mile… You got me worried cause I just ordered a set without even hitting them lol.

Have you tried X stiff? Might bring the spin down?

I am closer to 90 mph (95ish) with my driver ha ha and play the TCB just fine, not the longest but on par with anything out there in this loft range. The feel great and do not kill you on miss hits imo, if you have some speed then you will do very well with them.

I do think I need to move to an x stiff shaft in my irons, but with the TCB’s I was getting over 8k revs on a simulator with the 7. It could partially be my swing, but there have been a few other posts in this topic speaking to the amount of spin the TCB’s put on the ball. I recently moved into a set of T100’s and spin/height seems to be much better for my swing.

Does anyone know the torque spec of the weight plates for the TCBs?

After going on a heater for the 1st month with the TCB things cooled off due to health issues and now it seems I am coming back into some form and seeing the goodness again. I guess that is a tell about the forgiveness or the lack of it, anything but solid ball striking results in missed greens which for me tends to be short.

Hit some shots today that a week ago when I was not feeling well and clubed up would have just made it or been short were on the green today and in a couple of cases flew the green. This could certainly happen with any iron when contact is off so all relative. Went back to what was normal yardages and things were back to being fun.

These are still my favorite irons in a long time and that includes the PXG 0311T gen 3, Miura TC201, CB 301 and 21 APEX Pro combo (which I thought sucked). Could also be the Catalyst 100 Stiff shafts are just a good fit so that helps a lot, I was trying different shafts with the others and other than some MCI shafts (in the Miura's) nothing seemed to be quite right.

Still happy with the TCB’s. Getting lots of good birdie looks from all irons.  Lofts are in line with what I have played for years and forgiveness is superior to S55 & 716 CB’s with the exception of a low toe strike.  Very forgiving.  I like the more rounded profile, offset and sole grind.  Kind of reminds me of a forgiving version of my old Bridgestone J33 CB for those old enough to remember those.

Absolutely loving mine. Feel and flight is on par with my apex mb 18’s but they definitely do not punish as much and can get away with some off strikes for sure. These as special for sure and I just hope they don’t go anywhere in case a backup set is needed.

i just swapped from my '18 apex forged mbs (chrome)...loving the minute bit of extra forgiveness the TCB gives...and they feel incredible.

Did u notice a half club gain too goin from the mbs to the tcbs? Just about every iron shot today was a bit further than usual.

I do feel like they might be flying a touch more. I wonder how much of it is that they feel so dang solid and flight and spin seems perfect that points to the tech with the weight/face really making them special.

I have a few round in with the TCB and here are my initial thoughts….

1 - similar in size to the 2013 X-Forged

2 - similar shape to 2016 Apex Pro

3 - easy to shape shots, similar to 2016 Apex Pro

4 - not the longest irons I’ve ever hit, but not the shortest either

5 - fairly forgiving on thin shots (my usual miss)

6 - turf interaction is great

7 - a bit more offset than expected

8- exceptional feel

I am not even looking at other irons even after a few months of having the TCB (not my normal mo), they just check all the boxes and when I am good they are great. #4 above I agree with 100% and chalk it up to being fairly standard lofts, etc.

The last round out I had not hit a ball in two weeks and found I was hitting them a lot higher and I mean a lot higher but the same distances more or less, no idea why but they had that flushed feeling so maybe I was just hitting them correctly for my swing. Playing in a couple of hrs so we will see what today brings.

Been going though a rough patch with the iron game, mostly due to hand issues from Arthritis but the meds are starting to work and put together the best round in while this morning (77). These irons are so good when things are going well, I guess that is something for the "forgiveness" thread as these don't give you much if you are off.

But I just have to except the distances I am seeing and play to them, not the distances I had a while back when I 1st got them, once I started clubbing up the GIR's started coming instead of being short but at the target all the time. Ego is a funny thing, even though it is right in front of your face continuing to pull the wrong club is just silly.

CPO does have TCB irons - you have to call and speak to Cole (512-617-7131)  as mentioned in the TD driver thread.

I think they're $1200 or so

I got these in the stock finish last December. I like them but didn’t like ‘Callaways’ Satin finish and the head weights were a little light so I sold them probably too quickly.

I couldn’t stop thinking bout how much I like the head shape, lofts and workability compared to my 745’s I was still playing, so in typical WRX fashion I bought a set of the Raw heads from @m_w and was happy to get them delivered just as advertised.

I have been sitting on them a while and just didn’t like the chrome either and how it showed every flaw. Super picky right. I live in Fort Worth and took the to Artisan to have them shafted and see what MT could do with the heads. He lightly polished/ground  them and reblasted the faces. They kind of have a VR pro tour iron look now. I really like how the turned out and the build with DR at Artisan is always the best. I attached a few photos of before and after. I am guessing these are going to rust now everywhere but the face, but honestly have no clue. I find it very strange Callaway would spend of the time and money chroming only a certain portion of the iron.

Played with them today and very happy to have a set again. It takes a second to get used to the weaker lofts but they are amazing clubs.

I am really attracted to these irons, having been down the smaller CB iron route many times I always hit them better but have to take the distance lose which is still hard to deal with ego wise.

But hitting bigger headed irons all over the place does not make a lot of sense either. For whatever reason I keep going to "players" distance type club (presently APEX pro combo) thinking it will be better overall and it never seems to work in the long run.

I am quoting myself here to show how nuts this whole club thing can be, last night I was looking at the APEX 21 and Pro again because I feel lately I am having to work to hard with the TCB and the misses are getting frustrating.

Now of course the proper answer is the work harder at the game, actual practice and maybe a few lessons, but there is no time for that and its takes a day to recover from a round now. I love the TCB shape, size and results when flushed...I have swallowed what is left of my ego and starting clubbing up to get rid of the shorts, but still find myself looking up to a shot flying perfectly on the intended line only to be short again.

The TCB are scary accurrate but for me a groove or two low or high and it is chipping again from usually the front fringe or trap and trying to save par. You would think an old man could figure out the "miss" distance and adjust but I do flush one every now and then and see normal distances and fly the green, so frustrating to be so close but so far.
