3/4 wood recommendations

Recommended Posts

Looking for advice on a higher launch neutral to open fade bias fairway wood. Not looking for a low launch low spin rocket. Played a strong three wood last year and want something higher launch off the deck to pair with my 2 hybrid.  Also, a shaft recommendation with the head would be great. Either a strong stiff or x flex (not tx)

I have the 3 wood, super easy to hit, very long, and the 4 wood, as I understand is even easier to elevate.

I have the cbx 119 16.5 degree 4 wood with an Evenflow blue, it gets up in the air.  Depends on if a deeper face is your taste or not, as the face is a bit deeper.

Had a CBX 16.5 degree with a blueboard (s+) and that got up in the air better, no trouble clearing trees off the deck.

5 wood turned down to 16-16.5 will feature a smaller head and open face. I like my Ping G410, but that's certainly not the only option here.

Callaway makes a 4 wood version of the Steelhead XR.  If you dig into the stats, the 4 wood has a much flatter lie angle than many other Callaway options.  55*!

This club has been on my radar, but have not been able to try it yet.

Flatter lie angle will create a little more fade bias and is preferred by many.

I played a Tour Edge 4W for six years, although I didn't have the swingspeed for the CBX model. Plus, TE clubs carry a lifetime guarantee.

Compared to a 3W, a 4W gives a little better launch and has a slightly shorter shaft for better control. Plus many players can hit a 4W just as far as a 3W, depending on how they come into the ball.

I currently have a Cobra f9 5 wood head turned down to 17* that is very easy to launch high.  I have a 75g Tour Green in it at the moment.  It's definitely not a low spin monster.  It does have a tendency to spin a bit too much for me, and will get caught up a bit more into the wind.

I have a M3 3HL on the way just to try out.  It should be here today, and I'll get it shafted up with the 80g Whiteboard I was using in the F9.  I'll be able to compare them on the range tomorrow afternoon and on the course on Saturday morning.  I know the M3 will be good off the tee.  The deciding factor will be off the deck.  The f9 is great off the deck, and will be tough to beat.

I play(ed) a G410 15* 3W (turned up) with 7x Ventus blue last season.  Was great off the tee, but didn’t do what I needed/wanted off the deck on par 5’s

Tested the G410 5W turned down with same 3W shaft with similar results

Tested a gaggle of TSi2 3/4W’s with diff stock shaft option at Golf Galaxy with mixed results. Definitely realized how much more I appreciated the shallower face of the PINGs and the smallness of their adjustable hosel!

Currently using a Ventus Blue 7S shaft now in my G410 3W head. Hosel set to +1* FLAT.  Numbers on sim yesterday were 105ish chs, 11* launch, ~3200rpms, 110’ height, ~260 carry.

The correct shaft is making a world of diff for me and you can’t beat PINGs adjustability.  The FLAT setting is 💰

Any of the Taylormade 3HL woods would work well

I currently have an M4 Tour 3HL w/ Atmos Blue - love it.  I keep thinking I want to replace it, but it just flat out works.  The sole it great for hitting off the turf.  The taller face of the tour model helps off the tee.

There are other 3 woods out there that I know I can have more distance with (like my previous Cally Alpha 816), but I want a fairway wood that I know I can hit consistent distances with and not accidentally creep up to driver distance with.

This is what I did, going with the Mav Sub Zero as it sits a bit more open to my eye. Weight back, its not a low spin bomber just different shape/look from my experience.

Gamed the Rogue for 2 years which I loved but it wasn't always happy for the fade with me 🙂

I picked up a Rogue 4wd from CPO about 2 years ago for $140 w/ an Atmos Blue 70 TS and it works perfect for me. Don't see it leaving the bag for a while. Likes a slight draw, but I can fade it if needed.

Keep an eye on the 2021 mizuno stz .  I hit them at an indoor demo day and was pretty surprised.  Felt every bit as solid as my M3 but was half the price and had better ball speed.

If you are into the smaller tour heads, Cobra’s last few cycles are very good. I play the F9 Tour 4/5W at 16* with stock HZRDUS Smoke Black shaft and it’s a real winner as a “3W” in my bag. Long off the tee and very easy to launch from turf. I think the “low/low” shaft paired with higher lofted “3W” is a really cool combo that allows for diverse usage.

Been playing an f6 baffler 17.5 since last year. Turned it down to 16 for a few rounds. At 41.5" it was as long as my 43" 3wd of the turf. The f9 tour 4-5 turned to 16 or 16.5 would be my move. I just got the 3-4. Cant wait to try it out.

I was looking for something similar: higher launch, not super-low spin, and fade-biased.  Also,  looking for easy launch off the deck.

G410 3W LST at 14.5 with the Tour 75X worked out just about perfect for me.  Very controllable flight, left/right and high/low workability, and sits pretty square.  Ping Tour 75X shaft isn't anything fancy but pairs really well with the head--better than some pricier aftermarket shafts I demoed in the same head.  It's also worth mentioning again that this is by far the easiest 3W to launch off the turf, IMO.  You can definitely hit this club high enough with enough spin to stop the ball on a green.  I think they're on clearance right now so might be able to find a good deal.  Not sure about the new 425 line since I haven't hit them yet.

Other 3W clubs (sub zeros, sim, cobras, etc.) tended to be great off the tee--lower spin and great overall distance.  However, the flight was just too flat and low for me.  I couldn't imagine going for a par 5 in 2 unless there was a lot of fairway to run the ball up to the green.  Sim, for example, was miles longer off the tee.  But less consistent than the G410 off the turf in dispersion, spin, and launch.  And generally less user friendly on slight mishits.

Man, I love that shaft. I bought a Cobra F9 3/4 with a 70g Atmos Blue standard stiff in it and it was excellent but too whippy and I would balloon it some. Switched it out for the same shaft in Tour Spec, which is a lot less torque, set the loft to 14.5 and the club became a true weapon. Long and strong.
