When will we be hearing about the 2021 TP5 and TP5x?  The 2019 versions are great but each leaves a little to be desired....interested to hear more.

I read Garcia and Fleetwood playing new TP5X. Hoping they made it softer with more spin. Love the long game performance of current but did not like it inside 100 yards. Looking forward to trying these.

That’s fixed in the new tp5x. Most of TM staffers wanted to play the x but couldn’t get it to spin the way they wanted on partial wedge shots. So TM has addressed this. Should see the ball on the 5th of march.

With the TP5x now being a bit softer with advanced spin around the greens, what type of player should the TP5 fit moving forward?

Seems like I could benefit from the new TP5x this year but I suppose that could be a question suited for my fitter...

I haven't played taylormade balls yet, but is the tp5 the softer of the two (tp5 and tp5x)?

Which one is more like the prov1?

With the first two generations of the balls, the TP5 is the softer ball. It spins more around the greens, off wedges, and has a lower flight off the irons. The TP5x has a firmer feel and launches higher with less spin off the irons (which is why it flies longer). Both are fast off the driver because of the internal core construction, even the softer feeling TP5. TP5 feels soft because of the cover, which doesn't have much to do with driver performance.

It really comes down to having different characteristics of irons, wedges, and around the greens and matching up with a player's needs and preferences.

My guess is the answer will be the same as it was with the first gen TP5. A player who struggles with getting enough spin on their approach and wedge shots may want to play the TP5. Or a player who just prefers to use a lot of spin in the short game and likes a softer feeling ball overall would probably gravitate to the TP5.

I loved the 2017-18 TP5x and disliked the current one, so I have high hopes for the updated model. Seeing a guy like Rory switch to it is a great sign that the performance will be there once again.

This makes sense. Instead of my fitter asking "What ball do I want to use" for the fitting, maybe I start the warmup with some mid irons and let him make a recommendation? Or do you have any advice on how I can drill down on the best fit for me in a different method?

Always start your ball fit from the green back to the tee. As the club gets longer the performance gaps get less and less.

I agree with this. Around the green performance and putting feel should be first when selecting a ball. After that, I skip the wedges and short irons and go to mid irons (7 iron), followed by driver. If a ball passes all three checks there, then I'll play a few rounds with it to fill in the gaps. I've learned that for me if a ball passes the green side and 7 iron test, it usually performs well on approach shots with short irons and wedges.

If they get greenside spin anywhere close to some of the other urethane premium balls this will be a massive win. My opinion had always been a TP5/TP5x hybrid ball would be incredible. TP5x is the best driver/long iron/wind ball out there with the left dash prov1x a close second but greenside spin was always low. Sounds like they solved that issue. Can’t wait to try these.

Looks like I'll be moving away from Taylormade and TP5x if they increased the spin on the TP5x

Totally agree, the OG TP5x was a very interesting golf ball & very long.

The 19 TP5x was a complete turd & the 19 TP5 was the MUCH better ball.
