Swing Speed

There's a driving range that I frequent about 20 minutes away from my home that has top tracer installed in 12 stalls.  Not saying it's totally accurate as I have been on my buddy's trackman many times, but the carry distance and ball speed numbers for me between the two aren't that far off.  This is just a sample/my numbers:

Ball speed: 175 mph

Launch: 15*

Carry: 295 yards

Those are obviously just the some of main parameters that both top tracer and trackman share but of course, trackman has more data parameters and like you said accurate as well.  I do agree however that swing speed is irrelevant.  Golfer one could swing 122 mph and ball speed could be 184 mph while golfer two could have the same ss but ball speed could end up being 177 mph.  In this case it's about COR and where the ball was struck on the face among other factors.

Just wanted to clarify that I was saying swing speed is irrelevant because:

1. The same launch monitor can read different shaped club heads at different speeds

2. Different launch monitors measure speed at different points on the club face (toe is always faster than the heel by 4-5mph)

Smash factor is irrelevant (assuming center face contact) because of the unreliable swing speed measurements on all launch monitors. Assuming center face contact the only number that matters when looking at distance potential is ball speed.

Ok, I have nothing to gain by lying to you, but one thing I know for sure is I can get it 300 yards on a flat range.  If you'd like my realistic hard data, I went to sim 2 weeks ago and hit 14 drives, didn't throw a single shot out:

Average Distance: 282 yds

(2) shots at 293 yds

(1) at 291 yds, so only 3 total over 290

shortest was 252 and carried 245

Average Ball Speed: 157 mph

only 4 hits over 160 mph

Ave Launch Angle: 17 deg

Ave Height: 119 ft

Ave Landing Angle: 39 deg

Average Hang Time: 6.7 sec

Ave Curve: L 28 ft

Just curious where I should be at and what some reasonable goals are I guess, maybe the PRGR monitor is off idk, I always found it odd I get my distance with such low ball speed numbers.

Number came from first image that shows up when typing in average clubhead speed, some clinic or something put them together.

He didn’t say you lied about how far you hit.

The swing speed numbers and reported distances are inconsistent.

I drive about the same distances and my swing speed is 106 for my driver, but I do hit 7i farther than you reported.

I’d guess that you’re possibly delofting your irons? Not sure without a swing video.

Some guys on tour are short to average off the tee but long with their irons.  It's pretty rare though.  Someone who comes to mind is Webb Simpson.  170 mph ball speed so average off the tee but is known to hit his irons pretty long.  It's all about how well you can compress the ball with irons.

Most guys on tour are shorter with their driver relative to their irons because they use a shorter driver for better control of the results on fast fairways.

As an example, my son carries an 298 yards on average with his driver even though he possesses a 124mph swing speed with a stock length driver. He could carry farther, but doesn’t.

He also carries his PW 160 with a full swing, but, again only hits it about 135 on average whilst applying a partial swing given it spins back a foot or so. He hits close to 12-14 greens and typically aims for the pins.

His overall game is terrible for lack of practice, but can shoot par on occasion.

I would have to guess there are many his age who can play his game as well?

I also know a pro who drives roughly the same distances as myself (275 Average with rollout), but his iron game is really solid. In many cases, he could hit farther with his 2i.

Our driver game can only get us in the high single digits without a solid iron game.

For your current capabilities, I would work on the irons. Get better launch and higher spin. Get the appropriate distances.

My ss was 122 mph on a stock swing in my mid 20's thru mid 30's.  I could get it up to 127 when I would go after it hard so I understand your son's game.  Ss is now 118 as I am older now and have had some serious injuries.  I was also on the college team for a year at a 2.1 index before deciding on going a different route.  Currently a 5 handicap but I have my bad days out on the course.  I know my weaknesses and I work on them when I have the time to do so, but I am currently working hard to expand my personal training business.  I have also been around and trained pro athletes for a long time even pro golfers.  Have a buddy who's plalyed on the Mackenzie Tour and another who played on the UCR team at a +4 and is currently +2.  Been playing the game since I was 8.  So thank you for your suggestions but I am aware of what I need to work on.  🙂

Sorry, I mistook you for the original poster who’s complaint was his irons were too short...

Cheers!

No such thing.

Double jointed may have been the wrong term.  Check out Sports Science that ESPN did a few years back on Rory's swing.  He's got crazy hip flexibility.  I still stand by my statement that Rory is a genetic freak when it comes to golf.

Brute strength isn't the answer to hitting the ball farther, quickness is.

I've been working on "Brute Quickness". Thought that would be a great combination!
