What towels to use for finishing ferrules?

Any product recommendations for finishing ferrules with acetone? Every towel or wipe I’ve tried leaves material behind that sticks to the ferrule. Even tried the lint free Kim Wipes from the GolfWorks thinking those would be better. What are you guys using?

Blue shop towels work for me. Lots of acetone and spin quick. Take away while moving. If you aren’t satisfied, more acetone on a different part of the towel and repeat. No issues with fuzz or lint.

Ya don’t go easy on the acetone. I had that problem when I started building last winter. Give the shop towel a good soak beforehand

I'm no expert, but I use those brown or white dispenser paper towels you find in gyms or public bathrooms.  Not much lint, and quick spin off method like @Dave22 said.

There are plenty of products that will do the trick. Ideally you want something with minimal texture but the real key is just getting the acetone on the plastic as gently as possible. If you do that it doesn't matter what kind of texture or material you use. Recently I've been using Viva paper towels and have zero issues.

I lean towards a quality paper towel. Takes some practice.

I have a bag of old white t-shirts that I keep handy for this task exclusively. I cut them in strips and use plenty of acetone and pressure if trying to turn down. I’ll actually lightly apply with a finger to get a good shine.

The white t-shirt material does work very well, and most finishes that aren’t smooth need more acetone and a little faster spinning motion as they are being shined up.

I've found cotton balls work pretty well.  I never have to worry about having any as my wife keeps a good stash on hand.

For 30 year I have done the same but Bounty paper towels. Then wipe with some mineral spirits to remove any residue/streaks.

For a truly professional look a good shoe-shinning rub down using a soft cloth strip with polishing compound works awesome.  Plastic polish is ideal but anything with a mild grit in it works fine.  You could even use toothpaste.

Hi,  try wet/dry sandpaper 400grit then 1500grit, then shoe shine Flitz plastic polish or Blue-away with cotton t-shirt , then buff to a shine using micro fiber towel. Much better finished shine than acetone IMO.

I like the plastic polish method, I’ll have to try that. iIt seems it would be a better finish that even a well done acetone job.

Same approach here with plenty of acetone, particularly after turning down i’ll use more acetone pouring over ferrule while turning.

Looks like I just wasn’t using enough acetone. Think I’ll try dousing the cloth in more acetone and try the painters rags / old t shirts as well. Appreciate all the feedback.

I just use old t shirts. One I get it down to size, I do a quick wipe with a dripping wet rag, that leaves the entire surface wet. This get all the marks out, and leaves a smooth , shiny finish. Once it's completely dry, buff with a dry rag.

Just to be clear, I advocate sandpaper roll strip, 220 works well, to reduce the diameter of the ferrule.  Then acetone to remove the sandpaper scratches and shine it up somewhat.  The plastic polish is the last step, mostly to improve gloss and uniformity of the finish.

I use Kim Wipes and as long as you use enough acetone they won't leave any lint or fibers behind.

Ive had success with the blue shop paper towels. SOAKED with acetone. Ive tried microfiber clothes due to being lint free and they work well too. Just remember anything you use really soak it with acetone and spin fast. My last set of Mizuno’s I built, I spun with acetone and got great results like usual. Then I took it one step further and tried Flitz plastic polish. It was like cheating and the results were awesome.

tons of old t-shirts pieces & use strips to buff it just like a shoe-shine with the acetone    also works with 400 grit paper & touch-up with 800 or 1000 and just a little water

I take it a step further and cut up strips of old jeans to turn the ferrule down using the shoe shine method then strips of old cotton tee shirts for finishing

The process should be simple.  Paper towel (smoother side) if the paper towel has one.  I use Brawny Paper Towels and there is a rougher side and a smoother side.  I file down the ferrule with a fine rasp just wider than the hosel (I mask the hosel to prevent file marks).  Then I apply ample amounts of Acetone and make verticle wipes and rotate the iron until the ferrule is the right diameter to the hosel.  The finish is smooth, no file marks, and the the fit is exact.  With the right amount of Acetone there is no need to polish the ferrule.  The Acetone does that automatically.
