PXG needs a new motto.  I have one.  "Plenty that will do it as well.  But none that will cost you as much!"

PXG is not any better than the major OEMs, nor any worse.

If you have them, and like them, then, yes, they are that good.

Nope not any better than the other big companies clubs.  There is a reason PXG prices have dropped.  The old Gens are in line with other companies while they make a new Gen to bend over those who want to pay for them.

"Is PXG equipment really that good?" is such a subjective questions.  You could insert any OEM name in that sentence and get the same discussion.

I've owned PXG in every club and the only thing I still own is the irons.  I've been playing them for about 2 years and they are great irons.  However, they are currently being tested against the PING i210 and TM P7MC.  As good as the PXGs are for me, there's something missing with them I can't quite put my finger on.

I had the Gen 1 driver, fairway, hybrid and putter for a while.  They were just ok to me, nothing special.  I've heard the Gen 2 are better, but I've not hit them.

I love them but that is mainly because I was custom fit and it is all part of the experience.  I would guess if I was custom fit at Ping, TM or Titleist, I would love those as well.  With the pricing where it is now, I do not think they can be beat.

Case in point, I thought I would put an AD VR in my Proto head (which was my go to in the Ping G400) and I lost control and was shorter than the smoke yellow shaft I was fit into.  I also tried to change balls and I noticed that I lost the spin I was accustomed to in the past.  I am really good at assembling clubs, getting the lie, swing weights etc. spot on but that in itself, does not mean I am a fitter.  Makes me think I missed out on much better golf over the years.  Oh well, at least I am embracing it now.  Fitting goes beyond the shaft, I will make sure I test everything down to the ball I will play from this point forward.

It is all relative.  I hit the ProtoX similar to, if not slightly better than, the SIM this past summer in a fitting session.  The ProtoX was $365 WITH the shaft I was fit for.  The SIM was $549 with the "stock" shaft, and a shaft I was fit for was a $300 upgrade (there were other slightly cheaper shafts as well).  I can tell you, I did NOT hit the SIM - $184 better than the ProtoX.

Irons, I got a 5-GW set of 0211 (previous version), for less than $600 before tax.  That was again fit to me, 1* upright and 1* strong.  There wasn't another set of new irons I could see for less than $900 at the time, with most being over $1,000.

I will say, I have the 19* Gen2 PXG hybrid that I can absolutely crush.  Most Hybrids I cannot "get after" as I will lose it left.  This one just shoots arrows, it is an awesome club.  Unless I put a horrible swing on it, but that is true with any club.

So are they better?  Probably for some people.  Are they worse?  Probably for some people.  But the price on some of their items no longer follows their previous stigma.

I will say every round I have played with them, I do get comments "Oh, PXG huh? must've been pretty expensive" when my entire bag was probably less than their iron set.

I think it looks fantastic if that's worth anything. They are well above my price range, but I would like to hit some eventually.

from a beginner (25 HCP) perspective...

i took advantage of the various price drops on pxg over the past year and ended up buying a ton of gear.  i only started playing golf somewhat seriously last year though (had lessons 2-3 times/wk for about 3 months) and bought a set of old used mizuno jpx-ez forged irons, taylor made m4 driver, and a mizuno 4 hybrid.  as a beginner i sucked with these clubs but they seemed sort of ok.

when pxg discounted everything for months i finally bit the bullet and over the past 6 months went way overboard.  i have proto x+ 10.5, proto x 9, gen 2 0811 xf 10.5 drivers, 3 and 5 woods, 17, 19, 22, 25, 28 hybrids, and 3 sets of irons (gen 2 sgi in steelfiber i110, gen 3 xp in steel 95g, gen 3 xp in 70g graphite) as well as putters.  i am not able to get fitted so i've been testing out equipment and selling what i don't like, etc. in various shafts, etc.  i also live in a country where PXG stuff is not discounted by the local retailers so it has been fairly easy to sell whatever i don't use for roughly the same price as i buy them for, etc.

and i've gotten much better...my distance and accuracy has gone way up, etc.  i have also been practicing a lot (probably about an hour/day 4-5 days/wk for the past few months with a few breaks in between).

i totally thought the new gear was it....especially the hybrids as i love those.

but you know what?  last week i went back to my old mizunos at the range just for kicks and i'm hitting those clubs just as well as the PXGs...lol.  so i think it's more me and less gear making much of a difference.  i even hit some blades that were in our local community bag at the range and hit those kinda ok to my surprise.

pxg gear is pretty good i think but i don't know if it's any better than the rest.  but if you like the look, etc. i'd go for it.  price wise, these drivers were roughly 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of drivers from ping, etc.

it's winter and cold where i live so i only took out my PXGs one time out on the field and i took my gen 3 xp steel shaft irons.  it was a weird experience though because the clubs were fine but trying to play golf on frozen ground was an odd experience.  there was also a lot of "ok just move the ball because it landed in that snow area", etc.  as for what to put in the bag this weekend?  i'm probably going to stick with my gen 2 SGIs for awhile and use those as my main set of clubs.

The Gen2 hybrid was the best on the market for me! the lie angle is already flatter compared to the other OEMs and gives you the ability to adjust even flatter and move weights out toward the toe. These features make it the best for me.  Would I have paid $375 retail for it? Probably not, but with the recent sale it was a no brainer

Its as good as anything else thats available,  get fit for the best results,

That's for any  equipment from any manufacturer. Will having PXG clubs  do miracles for your game ? Probably NOT.

Will you like having a set of PXG clubs?

Probably Yes.

If they don’t fit your game then they’re obviously not worth the price. Or any price, really. And like every company, they do some things better than others.

But if you walk out of a fitting that proved a PXG product is the best fit for your swing, then how much is that worth to you?  Would you opt for an inferior (for you) club to save a few bucks if you knew you’d enjoy it less?  That’s a personal decision.

The criticism based solely on price point is silly. If you don’t like or agree with it, don’t buy it. Personally- I’ll happily pay a premium for a superior product. Anything that adds to my enjoyment of this game is worth paying for.

Agree it is relative to what you want and what fits you.  I play their irons because they have a good program for veterans so I can buy them at a competitive price.  Ex Ping guy in the engineering department so they are comparable to Pings IMO.  Used to play Ping S55's and haven't been in love with the later offerings from Ping.  Found the PXG's and am very happy with their irons.  Tried the woods and driver but wasn't a huge fan.  Hybrids are good though.  My 2cents.

The 0317 Gen 2 hybrids are some of the best I have tested up there with MIzuno CLK and Ping G410 in my experience. Proto+ driver is good as well. Very competitive with modern offerings from any other brands.

I don’t have much experience at all with anything else PXG. Great branding, brand marketing, and story makes it a win at the latest prices. To ask if any brand is really that good, is always subjective in nature. The better question is can you use it and not leave anything on the table and I think it fitted properly the answer is yes any brand is that good.

I’m moving  into a set of gen 2 0311p irons - I read the story that one of the ping guys was part of the i210 original design team - and funnily enough they bear a very similar appearance at address - the similarities seem to stop there though as the 0311p clubs have a far larger sole and the obvious difference in appearance.

I confess I’m a tweaker of clubs and am  intrigued about the ability to change PXG iron head weights so easily - a bit if heat and the screws come out willingly and can be swapped around - it’s far easier to move the weights in the hybrids and drivers that use the same weights as well.  But I’m sure, like any adjustable club, that will wear off as a pastime ....

Not saying their stuff is better but I was turned on to the Gen 2 XF driver by a friend here, and I will say, as it was billed to be just as forgiving as the G400 Max I can say, it truly is.  AND as an added bonus, it sounds (feels) SO much better than the Max as well as not having turbulators.  Their gear is great.... better than other OEMs?  No.  Worse?  Definitely NOT.
