How could anyone be a fan of Patrick Reed?

If he’s not an outright cheater, he’s at least a dude who completely skirts the rules to benefit.  It’s gone way beyond a mistake or two. I don’t understand how anyone could root for this guy. Just the absolute worst kind of pro there is, in my opinion. He’s embarrassing. The “plugged lie” in The Farmers just proves once again that he’s a cheat. I can’t imagine what his fellow competitors really think about him

1.  It's an individual sport, not a team sport.  Don't think PR cares what he fellow competitors think.  Nor should he.

 

2.  I root for teams, and teams/individuals representing my country.  While I may root for individual players in certain events (olympics, tennis, golf), I don't suffer when they lose.  My heart doesn't race, and I have no desire to throw my beer at the television.  I can't imagine wearing a TW shirt, or RF tennis shorts.   That type of adulation ended when I was about 13.

 

3.  PR is one of the more entertaining players to watch on tour...that's really all I care about.   To paraphrase Maximus, Am I entertained???

#3 is spot on. Say what you will about Reed, he is entertaining.

And how did all of the analysts react to it? Faldo, Nobilo, Baker-Finch, Dottie. All consummate pros. They all said pulling the ball out, moving it and messing around with the plug is not right. I don’t know. Guess I just think the dudes shady

Tho it would be nice for Patrick to at least attempt to take the high road, he probably never will at this point. IMO

Agree with 2. Nobody over the age of 12 should be wearing a players gear. Living in New England and seeing the amount of 40 year olds wearing Brady jerseys is pathetic

He followed procedure. But the fact is that the rules of golf rely on the honor system. If Patrick says that his ball was embedded and in the indentation that he pointed out to the rules official then he can’t really be questioned as having broken the rule. 
 

But the evidence is overwhelming that he cheated. First off the ball took a soft bounce before landing making it nearly impossible that it truly embedded. Second he was asking if anyone saw a bounce before he even got to his ball. To me that shows premeditation. Third he palmed the ball rather than picking it up with two fingers and made suspicious actions around the spot. Like he was making an indentation. Then he called the official over after he moved his ball. Almost like creating an alibi. 
 

He knew he could get away with it because he knows the rules. He knew he’s allowed to move the ball and he knew the official can’t question him after he made the indentation.

 

sorry. To say he was cleared is just plain wrong. He wasn’t cleared. There just wasn’t clear evidence that he did what everyone thinks he did. Which is move a ball that wasn’t embedded and make an indentation in the ground. 
 

And people comparing it to Rory are ridiculous. They miss the point. Rory’s ball was a wedge shot which was certainly embedded. Reeds ball was most certainly not.

But he takes every advantage to win.  Maybe gets a bit over the edge but so what.

 

I'm sure you all watch or have played American Football.  I bet there is at least one foul committed on every play.

 

I'm Canadian and I played hockey.  We all know how to hook or interfere to gain an edge.

 

The trick is not to get caught.

 

So why not for golf too.

 

What I do admire about him is 1) his ability to cheat just enough to not get caught or 2) if he does get caught (sand incident) he doesn't give a crap.   He is by far the most professional cheater in golf today and you have to admire him for that.

 

I am sick of everyone that seems to think golfers are so angelic and how honorable the game is ..... I don't believe it for a moment.

Both of their balls bounced and landed in a different spot.  Neither saw their ball bounce.  Reed asked the volunteer who was standing right there if it bounced.  She said no, it didn’t.   Rory skirted the rules more than PR.  Neither technically cheated.  You are being biased.  Clearly biased.

It wasn't Joe Montana that said that quote, he just repeated it 20 years after it was first uttered. 

 

We should hold golfers to a higher standard. That is one of the founding principles of the game. Nowhere in Football or Baseball was there a rule allowing/demanding to call your own penalties. Don't give him, Rory, or anyone a pass.

Incoming humble brag: I was at the 2018 Masters. Were there cheers on the broadcast? Sure, but there were plenty of unfavourable comments in the crowd, prior to some of these incidents, based on his then reputation. 
 

I’m indifferent to Reed. But he wins. He’s a proven winner. Do I think he has broken the rules? Yes, I think he has. Maybe not this time. 
 

It doesn’t appear the PGA Tour has any issue with what happened on Saturday. Maybe that’s the bigger question here.  Maybe the rule needs to be more black and white to avoid this issue.
