What is "cancel culture?"

Cancel culture (or call-out culture) is a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles - either online on social media, in the real world, or both. Those who are subject to this ostracism are said to be "canceled."

I'll admit I never would root for Reed--- I really root against him.

Despite me reconsidering and giving him a pass for the Farmers alleged cheating, it's the other stuff that bugs me. Claim of top 5 in the world. I don't think he's ever been top 5.  Having his parents thrown out of The Masters. Regardless of their history --- they weren't heckling him so deserved to be there (please correct me if I'm wrong).  The "I bet if my name were Jordan Spieth" comment and then the digging preshot routine in the bunker and his BS explanation.

I really lost interest in him, I guess that's the way to put it, after all of the remarks/social media junk following the '18 Ryder Cup.  That was enough, more than enough.

I was thinking about the origin of the Cancel Culture.  It's largely credited to have started with angry Twitter mobs, which Twitter came out in 2007 and really gained traction in the 2010's.  However from what I remember the first big Cancel Culture event was driven by people with really bad taste in music (Country 🙂 ) against the Dixie Chicks in 2003.

I like watching him hit the golf ball, but I dislike the way he handles himself.

I mean the situation he ran into this week, why on earth did he mark the ball, move it 10ft away and then say "oh here is where it was plugged".  It could just be the impact mark of where it hit the ground and easily bounced out of that mark.  Why do it to yourself if you're the leader on the PGA for strokes gained cheating...

Cancel culture actually started off as a great idea when all walks of men banded together to purge the planet of the the most hideously offensive of all time!

Sure it is. The rules alllow him to pick it up without notifying anyone. To identify or to check for an embedded ball.  To do what you’re saying. You need a rule change.

The rules allow him to do that, as long as he didn't clean the ball before deciding.  And Reed called in an official to make the final ruling.  Reed did nothing wrong.

So Rory made it up too ?  And sabatini?  We learned today from Rory M that his playing partner Rory S also had an embedded ball the same day. Also bounced.

Here is a follow up question!

Patrick Reed calls you and invites you to play a round with him.

At Augusta! He is an honorary member as a Masters winner and one perk is he can play whenever he wants to and bring a guest.

Id like to know who amongst you would turn him down, lol

I'd turn it down post haste and not because of Reed or any other player. I have zero interest to play ANGC. Many other interesting courses in the world I'd rather play. FWIW I have the ability to play an extremely well known course in my neck of the woods that hosts US Opens every 9-10 years via a member of that club who is a friend of a friend for at least 20 years. No interest in playing there as well.

Yes, I'm fully aware the rules allow him to mark the ball, I'm saying as someone who has habitually been accused (and confirmed) a cheater, why would he do it to himself to make more issues like this one.  Mark the ball, confirm its yours, call the official over and let him assess where it is at and if imbedded.  Not rocket science.

I heard Trip Isenhour and other pros on TV talking about how everyone knows who the bad apples are whether it is cheating or slow play. So here is a workable solution. The bad apples have an official assigned to them, not their group, to them for every shot, every round until they play fair enough or fast enough.
Also, Pga tour players should have to pass a rules test to keep their card every year so they can properly protect the field when officials are not around.

it will never happen but these issues can be solved.

Yeah, the “cool kids” get to say how the rules are applied and who gets spied on.

Great idea ; )

As we see, on one hand we have Faldo, Brandel, and Xander Soufflé “the boys are in a hissy over this!”.

....On the other, we have the rules officials, the VP of Rules and Competition for the PGA Tour, and a *lot of media announcers saying,

*What Reed did was done exactly the same way a dozen times on Saturday*

Whenever I want real golf talk I go to Trip, Damon, and Jaime.  Those guys REALLY know what they are talking about and just keep me on the edge of my seat.

But seriously, it looks like they are what GC gets for not wanting to pay some real talent.  I'd rather watch The Bachelor.

I'll play Augusta with him but he's gonna have to give me 3 per side.

Hell, I'll play a local muni with him. I'd like to talk to him and learn something about his short game approach and what makes his mental approach what it is. Say what you will about his ethics, the man has some resolve. I have worked for, worked with, and served with folks I absolutely do not like and I'm sure the "feeling" is/was vice-versa. That doesn't mean I can't put my "feelings" aside and learn something from them.

Ryder Cup ought to be fun to watch.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Well I have mentioned this before.  A reputation as a cheater didn't keep Gary Player, Monty or VJ out of the Hall of Fame.  It appears the Tour lets things slide more than a lot of the viewing public.  If you asked Reed if he had a choice of a great reputation and no HOF or a crappy rep with an HOF membership what would he say?

Maybe the tour should have an event each year where players get to play by Trevino's old betting game rules.  You get to put your hand on the ball before every shot, improve tour lies everywhere, etc.  It would be interesting to see who scored the best under those conditions.
