Mizuno Forged MP20

Recommended Posts

I'm currently playing Callaway Mavrik Pros to about a 13 HCP. I am interested in gaming some Mizzy's and I want that blade/muscle back iron head style. I don't want cavity back brushed metal look. I want shiny. I have looked online and found some MP32, 67 and even looked into some MP4's & 5's. I'm am open to any of these but have also thought about saving my pennies until middle of month and just buying the new MP20's. What is you all's opinion of these sticks?

In my view true blades have changed very little, maybe moving some of the weight around a bit of changing the sole slightly and that is about it.

The ones you mentioned above will play about the same for me.

If it were me I would buy some cheaper older models to make sure you like playing blades, they are not for everyone.

I still have a set of Mp32s I bring out now and again, along with a set of old Hogan blades. I used both for a couple of rounds last year and played fine with them, nothing different to the newer models to me.

I am decent ball striker and your experience may well be different

All Mizuno blades are great, so you can't go wrong. But you wouldn't regret shelling out for the 20s.

Virtually any iteration in the past 20 years will do just fine.

I have been a fairly decent ball striker for years and have found next to Zero difference between the MP 32-33-37-67 and even the MP 30 which is a forged cavity back. I hit the MP 20 next to my MP67’s just to see how different they were, other than a couple of yards due to loft, no difference in feel to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

if I were to pick a favorite it might be the 37’s, due to nostalgia.  I played my best year with them and had my best round of golf with them at the Navy Course in Cypress CA.

Which ones did you purchase?

MP20 MB with Modus Tour 120 shafts.

I also have the MP20 HMB in a 2i and 4i. Not a fan, really. They are fine, but they're a whole different animal than the blades.

What do you not like about them?  Just curious.

They're very nice for the type of club they are. But they're a hollow-headed club with a thicker top line, thicker sole, more offset, stronger lofts. They work fine as utility/long irons (Jason Day just put the 3 and 4 in his bag), and they feel better than most in that category -- but they're just a completely different club category from the MBs. I love hitting the MBs with buttery feel of a forged club and a thin profile, which some don't like but it gives me more of a sense of control. The HMBs are less nimble. But for those who like a thicker profile and more forgiveness, they're nice. Anyway, I'm likely to swap out the 2i HMB for a 5W and the 4i HMB for either my MB blade or possibly a hybrid.

I’m on the other end of the spectrum. I played blades my entire golfing life other than my first set of irons (Diawa Hi-trac) and I love the HMB’s. They are  a “players distance” or game improvement iron though.

If you wanted something new as far as blades on the cheap, if you fit into the shaft options, I’d suggest looking at the New Level 623’s

Find an older set of Mizuno, MP20s were not my favorite. I own the 5-pw in mb, and 3,4 in HMB. I think the 32s were the best set ever, easy to hit and feel every bit as good (or better) as the 20s...but being LH my Mizuno options are limited.

As others have said, blade technology is what it is, not much you can improve on. For bladed irons I currently own the MP32 (some may say not a true blade) from 2004, Nike VR Pro from 2011, Cobra Fly-z Pro from 2014 and MP20 from 2019. They all feel great and play similar.

I wore out three sets of MP33's.  Didn't like the look and feel of any MP iron again until the MP4's. Closest in look at address and feel to the 33's imo.  Still in the bag for 6 thru pw.

But yes, there is something about the 33s

I can't quarrel with anyone who prefers an older model of Mizuno blades. But they are not always easy to find in decent condition (especially a classic like the 32s), and if they are not in your preferred spec with the right lengths, shafts, grips, etc., you're looking at a more substantial investment than you might think. I explored these options before buying new with the 20s. Mizuno has some very good no-charge shaft options.
