Help explain monte video about hook

Can someone please explain to me or lead me to another video about the move at 2:58?

he sort of throws the right shoulder out and closes the clubface. I am an avid hook and snap hook guy and have endlessly fought the YouTube video gauntlet to improve.  This video was pretty eye opening and me trying this I instantly saw a fade.  I just don’t understand why.  If I am keeping the clubface closed, how is it not creating more left.  Is this somehow more about path than face?  

The move seems similar to what I always see Malaska talk about but not really understood.  I’m wondering now if my attempts to hold the face open are wrong to fight hook.  They certainly are not consistent and I lose all power.

I think it's more about compensation.

 

One of the things that I've seen in a couple of Monte's videos is that he shows that many of our key "swing faults" aren't swing faults... Early extension. Casting. Those aren't faults. They're symptoms of faults. Something else is broken and you're trying to figure out how to return the clubface to the ball square, so you're compensating for those faults. 

 

In a good swing, at P6 you should have a clubface that's more closed (i.e. trending inward of vertical), and as you rotate through impact you're not using your hands or wrists to square it because it's already squaring from rotation. You're releasing the wrists, but not flipping or rotating the wrists. 

 

What he's saying is that if you're the type of player who naturally draws the ball, you've already got an in-to-out path. Simple physics.

 

If you're coming into the ball with an open clubface from P5 through P6, your brain is going to force you to close it, and the only way you can do that is rotating the wrists through impact.

 

Problem is that's a timing move with a club that's traveling anywhere between 70 and 120 mph (depending on swing speed and which club you're swinging) and unless you do it JUST right, you're only squaring it to the path angle and blocking a shot 20 yards out right of the fairway or squaring it too much hitting a duck hook because your face is square or closed to the target at impact, WAY inside your path. 

 

The more you try to fight to keep the face open, the harder your timing move gets. You've gotta close it somehow. The later you hold it open, the more it becomes a hands/wrist action to close it, and consistency with that action is damn near impossible.

To expand on what @betarhoalphadelta said, Monte is just hitting on how the idea that manipulating path to offset a problem usually makes it worse. Its a Chinese Finger Trap sort of situation in which you have to do what feels like the opposite of what you want to solve the problem. The further away from neutral your path gets, the bigger potential you have for curvature, since it is the relationship between face angle and path that creates curve.

Our mind and our body is generally always trying to square the club, either to our path or to our target. A face square to where we are aiming with a neutral path goes straight, that SAME square face with an inside path will draw, and if that draw starts getting you into trouble then aiming further to the right and/or coming more from the inside to start the ball further right only introduces more potential for curvature, and then starts to force you to time the face differently, and that is where you get into trouble. As Beta said above, it is the compensations that Monte talks about that usually get us into trouble, and getting to the route of what we are compensating for is the key.
