High End (Driver) Shafts In Regular Flex?

Recommended Posts

I've been using with great success, in conjunction with the Ping G400 Max, the Hzrdus Black (5.5 Tipped). Historically, I've preferred firmer (stiff) shafts, but as I've aged (61) - though remained in good shape - my SS has decreased precipitously in the last 10 years from 106-110 to it's current, very pedestrian 96-100.

I'm interested if any moderate SS operators (with quick transition) have been using the latest and greatest (made for 110+ SS) shafts in Regular stiffness with their Ping Driver Heads, or other manufacturers heads, for that matter?

I've typically played/liked the following specifications:

- Ping (10.5 Degree) Head

- Shaft weight in the 60-63 gram range

- Driver (finished) club length 44.75" to 45"

- Torque in the 3.2 - 3.6 range

- Static weight of finished head/shaft in the 312-316g range

- Swing weight around D0 to D2

- Non CB shafts (the Tour 65 Stiff has been a great shaft option for me)

Full disclosure, with the epic positive reviews on the Tensei Pro Orange, I bought one (60 in Stiff), and summarily sold it (rebar). But, what about the Orange Pro 60 in Regular, or the White Pro 60 in Regular (Higher Torque at 4.0).

Or any of the following:

- Ventus Velocore Blue 6 in Regular or Blue 5 in Stiff

- Diamana D+PLUS Limited Edition 60 in Stiff (I played the Kai'li for years and loved it - similar profile I'm told)

- Diamana D Limited 60 in Regular

- 2nd Generation Rogue Silver 110 MSI 60 in Regular

- Rogue Silver 130 MSI 60 in Tour Regular

Clearly, I need to experience these on the course and/or with the benefit of Trackman, but curious if anyone with moderate SS has has success with any of the noted shafts. TIA

All solid options; the Ventus velos tend to perform really well regardless of weight/flex (so long as its the correct fit for the player). A couple others that I'd consider for you based on my experience fitting players similar to you (based on your description) are the new Diamana TB 60R/60SR and/or the Accra TZ5/TZ6 55 M3.

I would recommend the Ventus blue in your case.  It's mid launch/low spin and has lots of feel.  Def not rebar.  The D+ and D+ limited are low/low so probably not a good choice for you.  It doesn't feel like rebar but it's pretty stout.

+1 for the Ventus Blue.  50-S could be great option for your SS--very solid shaft even when compared to the slightly heavier 60g+ weight class offerings.

You're definitely on the right track with your thoughts and the advice of others.  I would throw out Tensei AV Blue 65, older Tensei CK Blue 60, Kuro Kage Silver, Rogue Silver/Black/White (all quite good IMHO), Diamana S+ 60.

Dallas Golf has the Rogue Elite Blue (mid launch) and Orange (higher launch) in R flex for $70 with any adapter you want.  That's a great deal (I believe the Rogue Elite is similar to their Tour Blue, etc.).

Ventus would be worth a try, I would stay away from the others if you didn't like the orange.  Similar to you I have a quick transition and have historically preferred HZDRUS Black type profiles.  Played the Black HC 62 gram for a long time, recently switched to the Ventus Blue with success which surprised me a bit.  I did the testing you are talking about and tried the Tensei orange & white, Rogue 130 MSI etc...  All quickly went back up for sale after a day on the course.

With the modern materials being used in high-end shafts, companies are finally able to make stable shafts in the lighter weight categories. Maybe a Ventus 5S, Diamana ZF 5s or even 4s, or Tensei Orange 55s could work. You'd have to tweak the weighting to get it to feel right, but from what I've read weight is probably more important to get right than flex. Maybe moving down a weight class will give you a few MPH bump and give back some of the feel you have lost.

If you are really looking for distance, just moving around from shaft to shaft in the same weight class isn't going to get you much and flex won't do much either unless the flex feel changes your swing sequence and allows you to maximize your speed at impact (though this is often temporary in it's results). You need to drop weight if you want to get more speed. Does not matter if you have a $400 shaft or a $40 one, the weight is where you need to focus.

Great feedback, here. I think I could handle the Ventus Blue 6S, just getting to the age where I have to focus on getting through the ball (my move is no longer athletically instinctive). Then I gravitated to the Ventus Blue 6R, but candidly, wasn't thrilled with the 65g weight as almost all the driver shafts I've played, with success, have been in the low 60 gram range (60-62). At any rate, I pulled the trigger on the Ventus Blue 5S as I believe it meets both weight/stiffness (& torque) parameters. Stay tuned! Feedback to follow!

I ended up purchasing the Ventus (Velocore) Blue 5S and, in the G425 head, it was amazing. Felt awesome and nothing but straight. The setup is a little lighter than what I'm used to - could have gone 6S -  but frankly, it's incredible how stable that shaft is at 59 grams.

Slow SS here. I don’t see a huge drop off in distance or feel going to S flex over R, and much better dispersion with S. Some S flex shafts feel softer than others. Have a Tour AD XC in a hard to find R flex but Ventus Blue 6S seems to perform better overall.

Graphite Design caters to the Japanese JDM and LPGA and Senior markets and often have multiple R flexes, like R1, R2 as well as 40-50g options.  They make great stuff across their product lines. Definitely worth checking them out.

I’ve been really pleased with the KBS TD shafts.  They make them by “category” for flex designation.   Their category two with some tipping may be a good fit or try a category 3 straight in.

@Tdsjfb You may benefit from the higher torque in some shafts, depends on your swing.  I wouldn't let that number sway you in the wrong direction.  As long as the shaft is quality, any torque from 3.2 to 5.0 is not really noticeable to a stable swing.

The torque in my shaft is 3.5 which is slightly high compared to my prior Fujikura Fuel Tour Spec 60 "S" at 3.1-T.   Most people don't notice shaft specs or bend profile, unless they have a fast transition and OA temp.

So maybe the important question is your swing consistently stable and smooth?

I have Diamana D+PLUS in Stiff and Rogue Silver 110 MSI 60 in Stiff and neither impressed me but got no good reason for that other than they felt the same.  Both were good for a swinger but not so much a hitter - like me.
