Hybrid shopping: beat shaft options?

Myherobobhope

Recommended Posts

I haven’t swung a club this year, but I’m looking to lose the “my bag is set challenge”.

I have an old 18 degree adams hybrid with proforce v2 100g shaft in it... it’s tour stiff, so I’d like something more playable.

Id like to stay in a heavier shaft, and like the square toe on the adams... does that mean I should go Callaway? I’d prefer a fixed hosel option...

The websites for most clubs don’t seem to have all the shaft options... any suggestions for a non upcharge heavy, stable shaft?

great question and the v2 100 is one of the best of all time and one of my favs.  most stock options will not be that heavy or that sort of shaft.

in terms of the hybrid itself the callaway apex was basically designed after adams pro hybrids and some other companies make ones similar as well.  ts3 from titleist, zx from srixon, and even the new sim2 is similar in look.

the zx is fixed and so are callaway apex.

the zx comes with hzrdous smoke which will be similar feel to the v2 but about 15 grams lighter.  like i said most stock offerings or even free upcharge are not the heavier models.  atmos black is also a good one with similar characteristics to the v2 but will not be stock or free upcharge.

What are your goals with this hybrid?
are you looking to gap off a wood, or something to replace a wood?

I haven’t found anything better than the Adams Super 9031 proto. I had the Callaway Apex 2016 and dumped it for the Adams. My goal was something more iron like in flight and to fill a certain gap.

If you are looking for something new that fits your criteria. The TEE EXS PRO. It’s the only hybrid I found to be better than the Callaway Apex 2016 at that 18* loft. I’d say it’s on par (pun intended) with the Adams Super 9031 at that loft. It flies a little higher than the Adams, but lower than the 2016 Apex. If I bagged an 18* it would be a TEE EXS PRO. If it’s replacing a 3 iron or 4 iron, then the Super 9031 proto is where it’s at for me!
brand new heads for under$30 and you can put whatever shaft, you want in it

You won't have much luck finding a stock shaft offering that is in the 100g range, hell even 90g is harder to find stock.  I have a couple older tour issue Adams hybrid heads in the Classic and LSP.  While they are super solid heads and fixed hosel, I would still rather game my TS3 over them.  Would like it a lot more if Titleist would make it easier to get OEM tips, but that is them just being greedy knobs compared to other OEM's.

In my 4H, I switched from the default Ping Alta CB shaft in S flex to Proforce V2 in X flex. The feel didn’t change as much as I expected, but the additional weight (76 to 90 g) and stiffness (unknown) really stabilized my ballflight. The Alta felt good and I suspect if I had started with it in X flex I never would have changed. I only switched to the Proforce because of how ubiquitous the praise is (rightfully so, as I have found) and I wanted something in black. So if you are looking for a club with a solid made-for shaft, the Ping lineup is worth a look because their shafts are great performers. The Tour shaft is heavier (82g at S flex, 87 at X) and well regarded from what I have seen.

Awesome... I looked at the Srixon today and think it might be a decent fit with the right shaft... I haven't hit balls this season yet, so I'm going to wait and hit some on a monitor. I'll have to have a long dive into shaft options, so I guess I'll got get fit for it at some point... I think the Srixon might be the answer (with a matching 3+ wood for reasons!)

I want the hybrid flight, honestly... higher is good... Definitely love the Adams (it's an old IDEA, but it works). The V2 is a great shaft, I just need some more flex in it.

I’m on the other end I suppose.
I put a Modus 105s hs/x1 at 1/2 over corresponding iron standard length in my 20* and 23* Super 9031 hybrids.

I had an Adams XTD ti hybrid that I set at 14.5* and it flew as high as my 18* Callaway Apex 2016. They both flew too high for my liking, as a matter of fact, every hybrid I’ve hit aside from the Adams line and TEE EXS PRO, plus the CBX 119 fly to high for my liking.

Like mentioned before, many of the Callaway’s have the Adams shape to them since they snatched up the designer of the Adams hybrids. I bet you can find something with upgraded shaft options on Callaway Pre-owned that would fit you nicely. You could probably find a bonded head in a high dollar shaft for what you’d pay new from major OEM’s

Don't want to oversell it, but the '21 Apex Pro hybrid is well worth giving a test run. Great combo of speed and spin retention along with a soft-ish impact feel and sound. The KBS 95 hybrid shaft can be had for a fairly reasonable upcharge as well.

I have the Srixon H85 and it is a great hybrid: draw biased for sure, but lead tape and extra weight are helping to keep it in check.

It has a Hzrdus Black 85g 6.5 shaft on there and fits the club pretty well: nice high ball flight, about the same as my 5-iron.  It is weirdly odd as that same shaft on a Srixon driver was one setup I didn't particularly care for; the flex profile may be much different on a 3" shorter shaft.
